Poor Private Party - everyone can't wait for Hurt Syndicate to kill them, me included. - Harley/Mariah's promo. It gave me...feelings. - Kenny's promo. - Wheeler Yuta getting relentlessly beaten up in the Casino Gauntlet. What I didn't like: - Casino Gauntlet was mostly rubbish. Daniel Garcia had a good showing though. - Powerhouse Hobbs...really? Typical "quick build followed by a high profile loss" AEW booking. Standard. - Cope. Deathriders. FTR. Can you all just FUCK OFF. - Kenny's new music. Pretty meh episode overall. I'm losing interest fast in all of this. Quote

They clearly want matches for special episodes that are meaningful and they don't want to give away really big stuff or beat guys that are at the top level (and they don't often do non-finishes) so they go to these guys who are a rung below who they are confident can sustain a loss. I've no issue with that, except as you pointed out earlier, Hobbs has just come off a loss for a lesser title, and he's only been back a short while so both of those things make this feel like a quick elevation and will be followed by him returning to normal. I'd have done the Jay White match. It's big enough for a TV special, not big enough for a PPV main and White can take the loss. Quote

As well as the excellent point made by @tiger_rick part of it I think is just laziness - if you've got a few weeks where you're not sure what to do just heat someone up then have a big TV match to fill the time. I also think Tony Khan is often a somewhat cowardly booker - all too regularly too hesitant to really go all in on something. So pushing someone a little bit then settling right back into the status quote is a way of doing something without the risk of doing it properly and it going wrong. Quote

Not blindly defending him here, because I don't think he's a brilliant booker generally, but isn't this a very Japanese influence? They have these guys who are clearly pegged to be stars and they'll give them a little push in something like the G1, they'll give them a little excursion, they'll push them into a title match, that they won't win, and then, when they're 44 years old and their knees are fucked, they'll get the big IWGP title win. Just strap the rocket to some bastards back and let him sink or swim. Quote
