WyattSheepMask Posted July 25 Posted July 25 He did undergo treatment for a little over a year to begin with, and in May 2025 announced that he was cancer free, but it returned about 6 months later. Reading all the tributes over social media has really done me in. He was clearly loved & respected by so many. Going to turn it up loud for him tonight. When I got older, I discovered the Goodies and was shocked to find out he was one of them. Just seemed a million miles between those versions of him. I guess that made him the Michael Palin of the Goodies. Anyway, he always seemed like one of those people who'd somehow stick around forever, and that wouldn't have been a bad thing. RIP. Paid Members I Bent My Wookie Posted July 27 Paid Members Posted July 27 It was quite refreshing how open he became about his mental health and bipolar in his later years, less as a way of explaining away some times he may have been rude or made people upset but more so in how he kinda approached a topic like mental health in the elderly and that he was open to getting help and not holding back. I was never much of a spring watcher, but he did always make me smile when he would just be making random off the cuff comments about animals mating in a way you'd expect lads down the pub to talk about it. He was no Sir David in elegance but I think that was part of his charm. Absolutely love watching clips of The Goodies and think I'll be doing some more of that this evening. Quote

Always fantastic entertainment value, though. Springwatch was appointment viewing for me for many years, and he seemed utterly irreplaceable when the news first broke that he was leaving the show. A mate of mine was a huge Goodies fan, and I'd quite often end up back at his flat after a gig watching it on DVD. He had bought one of their singles on release, and the B-Side was "Father Christmas Do Not Touch Me", and we both used to DJ at a pub every Christmas Eve for years, and he always spun that one to end the night (usually after Wombling Merry Christmas); it remains on my Christmas party playlist to this day. There's some brilliant stuff in The Goodies, too, and it's a shame it's never been as repeated as a lot of other British comedy. Ecky Thump and Kitten Kong are obviously brilliant, as is the "puppet regime" joke, but they also did some decent satire around apartheid and police brutality, even if some of the other stuff in those episodes has aged in the way of most '70s comedy; one of those facts of life where even people making the right arguments still existed in the society of their time, so an anti-apartheid satire still had Bill Oddie blacking up. There's a great gag in one episode that always makes me smile, where The Goodies are penniless and down on their luck, walking through a run-down street, complaining about how nobody wants originality in their entertainment any more, everything is just a rip-off of something that came before. As they're having that conversation, they walk past a bloke dressed as Gumby from Monty Python rifling through a bin, and Bill mutters a quick "alright John" to him, then carries on his rant. Just a lovely bit of self-deprecating business. Quote

Just had a nice, avuncular air about him. Other times he was on comedy shows making jokes, so I only saw that side of him. Hadn't read or heard about people's interactions with him in real life. Paid Members BomberPat Posted July 27 Paid Members Posted July 27 I think it's fair to say he contained multitudes; he could be very grumpy on Springwatch, and there's a bizarre episode of Never Mind The Buzzcocks where he swings pretty wildly from madcap silliness to being quite pissed off at the entire format, and I'm sure there were similar appearances around the same time. That said, he was always incredibly open about his struggles with mental health, and I think he did a good job of always being clear that his bipolar disorder could be an explanation for rudeness and unpleasant behaviour, but was never an excuse for it.
