Aw fuck. Was there even news about him having cancer? He was very much out of the limelight and I wonder if this is why he seemed to disappear after suddenly announcing new music in 2019/2020.

He never really got the credit he deserved for the 1987 Whitesnake record, a really incredible player (his vibrato was off the charts) and song writer. Underrated singer too which is what led to the whole Whitesnake drama....

His stuff with Blue Murder was also really good - great example of his heavy riffs with sick lead parts is:

 There is a quip about Fleetwood Mac and them needing two guitarists to replace Lindsey Buckingham but Coverdale actually had to do that for Sykes.

Garth 'Honey Boy' Hudson, the last surviving member of The Band, has died at age 87. A multi-instrumentalist, he played keyboards and saxophone for the group. He also worked quite a lot with Dylan and did session work with the likes of Emmylou Harris and Leonard Cohen. 

Obviously, Levon Helm and Robbie Robertson tend to get most of the plaudits, but Hudson's work was very important to the sound of those early (excellent) The Band records.

I absolutely loved Marianne Faithfull; any album of hers was a day one purchase for me for a long time. I really love a singing voice that sounds really lived in and characterful, and she had that in spades, while still being a traditionally great singer, and one of the great interpreters of songs - I'm a huge Tom Waits fan, and it was Strange Weather that he wrote for her that first got me into her, but then I once took out a copy of her album of Brecht & Weill songs from the library as I was really into that vibe at the time, and I honestly don't think anyone has done their songs better.

There's some really fantastic stuff over the years - she has an album called Easy Come, Easy Go with covers of "Hold On, Hold On" by Neko Case, "Black Coffee" by Sarah Vaughan, "Sing Me Back Home" by Merle Haggard, and plenty of other good stuff that's absolutely brilliant, and most everything she did after that had at least one really interesting cover version on it. She did a version of "Going Home", a late Leonard Cohen track, that's really gorgeous too.

Brian Murphy has passed aged 92.  Stalwart of British sitcoms in the 70’s, he made a comeback in Mrs Merton and Malcom singing an incredible rendition of Starman.  Very distinctive voice and a funny man.

He was in a gentle sitcom Sky did about 10 years ago called The Cafe. Was a bit twee but I always found it a real relaxing watch. Was the first time I came across the lass from Fleabag too. He's just a proper comedy actor. Brilliant but with a genuinely funny face. You're already laughing before he's done or said anything.

He was great in George And Mildred, as well as Man About The House. He was also part of the final Last Of The Summer Wine trio as Alvin alongside Russ Abbot and the late, great Burt Kwouk. 

92 is a decent knock.

Really sad, a band I grew up on from my Dad and still love to this day. His drumming was fantastic.
