Chili Posted November 25, 2024 Posted November 25, 2024 (edited) WWE obviously has a bigger platform through decades of establishment as an entertainment company. AEW is nowhere near that and comparing there potential to create crossover stars is silly when the last real crossover star was what, The Rock. Batista had long proper buggered off before he hit it big. Even Stone Cold barely got a few episodes in Nash Bridges. I don't think AEW actually has any interest in creating crossover (Cody being the exception but I think he was already ploughing those fields) stars for that simple goal like Vince and Hogan wanted for him in the 80's. They need to write a week of consistent TV again first. Dig out your 2021 tapes and do your homework Tony. Edited November 25, 2024 by Chili Quote
Paid Members LaGoosh Posted November 25, 2024 Paid Members Posted November 25, 2024 I suppose if you create a crossover star they're more likely to fuck off regularly/permanently and/or ask for a shed load more money when their next contract is due. Also it's unlikely that it brings in much in terms of new business. I doubt anyone new is watching AEW because they saw Mercedes in The Mandalorian, for example. Quote

This is definitely veering into ‘tedious discussion’ territory, but there’s a difference between ‘crossover star’ and ‘opportunities to cross over’ - you don’t need to be at the level of Cena, Rock or Batista to tick personal ‘outside of wrestling’ ambitions of your bucket list. You know what, completely forgot the fella existed. Great example. Yeah there is definitely a difference, I'd use Terry Funk's outside wrestling career as the finest example, doing it to keep that SAG health insurance like Jesse Ventura did. Smart lads who could never be big movie stars but we're decent enough and much smarter than the average bear when it came to their co-workers. Edited November 25, 2024 by Chili Quote

DavidB6937 Posted November 25, 2024 Author Posted November 25, 2024 I feel like we've gone through this multiple times before. Anyway I'm a big fan of heel Penta by himself and I hope wherever he ends up he can go back to something like that. Quote
Paid Members Nick James Posted November 26, 2024 Paid Members Posted November 26, 2024 I think the last two pages have proven that people will argue about absolutely anything, as long as it boils down to AEW vs WWE. Always find it hilarious and fascinating that Harley Cameron is married to the former Xyon Quinn, with their actual names being Danielle and Daniel Vidot. Brilliant. Quote
Paid Members LaGoosh Posted November 26, 2024 Paid Members Posted November 26, 2024 (edited) I don't think AEW has really done enough to hype the C2 or make it feel special. Just a quick announcement on Dynamite and a YouTube video announcing the competitors. They should be doing a big song and dance with it. press conference, hype videos, open Dynamite up with all the wrestlers, Tony Khan and all the senior staff in the ring taking group photos, Okada handing over the belt in a ceromonial fashion, it's own cheesy 80s sports TV theme. All the bells and whistles. Edited November 26, 2024 by LaGoosh Quote
Paid Members Lion_of_the_Midlands Posted November 26, 2024 Paid Members Posted November 26, 2024 A bugbear of mine Gooshy is that the competitors are just announced, they should have to qualify. I feel the same about all wrestling tournaments and the Rumble to be honest. The C2 is for a title, there should be a story to tell about getting in to it, and it then gives you stories for after the tournament. Simple pro wrestling storytelling and a way of making everything feel a bit more important and high stakes. Obviously Okada gets in as champ but everyone else should earn it. Quote

I think in this case, if they still did the rankings or displayed win/loss records that would help in some reasoning as why certain wrestlers were in it and others not. Quote
Paid Members BomberPat Posted November 26, 2024 Paid Members Posted November 26, 2024 I think qualifiers might be a bit overkill for what is already a month-long tournament, but I would like to see some kayfabe justification for it all. Why is Brody King, who didn't win at Full Gear, in, but his stablemate Buddy Matthews, who won his match, isn't? And Beast Mortos, who was in the match Buddy won, is in. Quote
DavidB6937 Posted November 26, 2024 Author Posted November 26, 2024 Yeah even if it's not qualifiers - and I agree, it probably doesn't need MORE matches - then it doesn't take much for TK to do some explaining away behind the choices. That he's impressed with certain people or looking for others to step their game up etc, whether it's based on recent performances or whatever. That would add a nice extra layer of build up to it. Awards Moderator HarmonicGenerator Posted November 26, 2024 Awards Moderator Posted November 26, 2024 Last year was helped massively before it started by Danielson hyping it up for a few weeks, and Eddie Kingston adding his titles to the prize. If Ospreay hadn’t been busy with Fletcher he could have taken that former role, and if Garcia hadn’t just won the TNT title he could have announced ahead of time that that belt will be part of it too. We might still get those, I guess. I think Claudio being in it again is something that might be an unnecessary wrinkle. A Death Rider who’ll crush your neck with chairs and doesn’t care about anything but will (presumably) be adhering to the Continental Classic rules like a good boy outside of the segments with his mates.
