DavidB6937 Posted July 23 Posted July 23 Not being terrible at volunteering at Samaritans. I was a bit nervous during the training and whatever but I'm really enjoying it. Obviously that's a strange emotion so it's more feeling like it's a rewarding experience where I'm actually making a difference. Certainly helps you put a lot of stuff into perspective as well. It's mentally very tiring but I'm really glad that I'm doing it and that I'm able to channel my energy towards something really important. There's so many people out there that just need to talk and be heard. Quote

Paid Members John Matrix Posted August 5 Paid Members Posted August 5 I’ve just seen someone online refer to the superhero movie genre as “capeshit” and I’ve never felt more heard - what a perfect articulation of my general views on the subject. This does however present quite the quandary as my son is firmly in the midst of his Marvel/DC fandom at the moment and as a result I’ve had to escort him to showings of Superman, Thunderbolts, Fantastic Four and this weekend - Spider-Man (whereas I’m reduced to sneaking out to midnight showings of John Wick 4 after everyone’s gone to bed) and seeing him discover his love for film, storytelling and art via the graphic novels through these characters - now that really does cheer me up. Paid Members Statto Posted August 11 Paid Members Posted August 11 Unfortunately I didn't take my phone out with me this morning so couldn't get a picture (and I suspect it won't be there long enough for me to return at lunchtime) so you'll have to settle for the written description that someone has expertly modified the "GARDEN FURNITURE SALE NOW ON" banner outside the big garden centre to read "DENTURE SALE NOW ON" complete with images of false teeth. DavidB6937 Posted August 12 Posted August 12 Had a really great call with someone from a charity organisation called Heard today. Their primary focus is connecting real life stories to people in the media and ensuring that the lesser talked about ones are represented in the right way. For example, they often consult on those harder hitting soap stories - alcoholism, abuse etc.. not who shot Phil! - or documentaries etc. Just making sure that the real voices are heard. I've been invited to a palliative care conference in Sept where I'll get the chance meet a lot of the people involved and share my story alongside hearing many others. I think Adam Kay is a speaker who I vaguely know about so should be interesting at least. Just really glad to be finding new opportunities that fulfil me on a personal level and feel really positive about it all. Quote

We went to a good local viewing spot and there was a good couple hundred people there I reckon and a really nice communal vibe. deathrey Posted August 12 Posted August 12 (edited) It got really cloudy where I live (it's been a clear sunny sky all day) and you couldn't see anything, I was inside as the kids were in the bath but all the neighbours were outside complaining they couldn't see anything, I was listening in laughing at them, highlight of my day. Thefatduck Posted August 13 Posted August 13 Walked up to our local pub last night and when we got in there it was empty inside with a sign on the bar that said, ‘Gone to look at the sun. Be back soon.’ Walked around the corner to the park where there were probably 200 people (including the staff and customers from the pub) from the community trying out their homemade eclipse viewers, some people with fancy lenses, dogs running about and kids just doing kid stuff. The sign cheered me up and seeing everyone united in the pursuit of not going blind was great too. Quote

A friend suggested that maybe north London was slightly too far north to see anything of the eclipse proper. Got a bit dark in the sky for a short while, but that was about it. Quote
