DarloKid
with the second season airing at the end of the month, I decided to finally watch season 1. Really enjoyed it, the short episodes made it a breeze to sit through.  Also watched the documentary on Netflix this afternoon, couple of questions from that ... is there any reason as to why GLOW was cancelled at a time it was in its peak ratings and popularity wise, I know in the documentary they alluded that the financial backers wife made him pull out. I wonder if there was a massive fall out behind the scenes as surely the company would have been that profitable to carry on without the backer, plus with the director, Cimber and the brain behind the concept David McLane not wanting to give interviews for the doc , just sounds as though there's some bad feelings lurking about  anyways thoroughly enjoyed my weekend learning and watching about GLOW that i had never really took any notice or interest in before
TildeGuy~!
I remember reading somewhere ages ago that it was cancelled due to financial issues as there never really branched out and performed at the same place in Las Vegas and not earning enough from sponsorship deals. Daily Buzzard
The wrestling business model at the time was lose money on TV to make money at the arenas but the GLOW house shows did not do well, and while they probably did make money from their TV it wouldn't have been enough. hallicks
Series 3 anyone? We're about 7 episodes in. The focus has shifted towards being character driven, with not much actual wrestling, though there's been one so far that focuses on it and it was really funny. I'm really enjoying it. Marc Maron is excellent value as always.
Paid Members Your Fight Site Posted August 19, 2019 Paid Members Share Posted August 19, 2019 (edited) Yeah, I binged series three last week. It does seem to have focused on characters, but not for the better. Everything was so rushed. There were lots of things started but then never touched on that could have made for interesting stories. Two that immediately spring to mind:  Debbie battling body image issues and turning to bulimia. Missed opportunity to highlight that and educate. Instead, it’s never shown or mentioned again. Cherry getting in debt with the casino. Again, not mentioned or referenced after being taken to the back room. Instead, she just patches things up with her husband and everything’s rosy again. chardcore
I have to say that I really enjoyed the last series (3) of GLOW. Yes there were several dropped storylines but I think there is scope for at least one of the ones mentioned above to be explored in the next season. I really love how this show makes me flip flop between liking main characters and hating them, Ruth being a prime example. I just find the whole series fun. Awards Moderator HarmonicGenerator Posted August 19, 2019 Author Awards Moderator Share Posted August 19, 2019 We’re halfway through season 3 at the moment. The characters are all really well developed but I think it’s suffering a bit from not having that overarching goal - getting on TV in season 1, staying on TV in season 2. I’ve also heard this one is the final season. Is that right?
Paid Members BomberPat Posted August 19, 2019 Paid Members Share Posted August 19, 2019 I'm halfway through, and finding it good but, yeah, lacking in focus. It also feels like this series has relied more on name-dropping, nudge-wink, "it's the 80s, guys!" content than it has before, but speaks to a lack of confidence in the material. I don't think anything's been said about it being the final season, but I do wonder how long it can carry on for. The show's premise relies on the "in-universe" GLOW not being a success, and there's only so many ways they can justify the show continuing while no one's making any money or furthering their career from it before it becomes wholly unbelievable. The tie-in comic book has the GLOW girls getting booked on other wrestling shows, kind of a pastiche on the "POWW" girls (most of whom were former GLOW girls) appearing at AWA Superclash 3. I guess the split into breakaway groups, and trying to find their place in a larger wrestling world, or the politics of splitting up the roster, could drag the concept out further, but I don't see it making great TV. Factotum
I could quite easily watch a show with Maron's character directing his B Movies.
MVP RULZ
I don't think they've said anything about it being the final season but Netflix has a history of cancelling shows after 3 seasons so I wouldn't be surprised if it does end up being the final season. I hope it carries on though as I've enjoyed all 3 seasons
Wideload90
Season 3 has been the weakest one so far but it's still really enjoyable viewing; Marc Maron is the standout. More wrestling needed in future seasons (if any) I still cheer when Carlito pops up - he deserves another run.
Paid Members Hannibal Scorch Posted August 25, 2019 Paid Members Share Posted August 25, 2019 I felt this season started really strong. But that finale was awful. I hope it gets a final season though
Wideload90
Finished it earlier this week (Needed something to do whilst forum was down) and felt a little disappointed. I forgot that Glow was 10 episodes a series rather than 13 so felt flat at the airport ending. Loved the Xmas story but overall this was a series which ignored certain plotlines and character development and I worry how much is left in the tank. Despite this - wholesome family viewing. Paid Members ColinBollocks Posted August 25, 2019 Paid Members Share Posted August 25, 2019 I thought it was an incredible season. Woke but done so well that it never felt forced. I cried a couple of times during it too because they've made me care so much about most of the characters. With it's current standards, it's in with a shout for being one of the very best telly shows of the 10s.
Awards Moderator HarmonicGenerator Posted August 25, 2019 Author Awards Moderator Share Posted August 25, 2019 I hope they get a season 4, just so they can wrap up some loose ends, but I was a little disappointed in the season overall, for the reasons mentioned earlier. Very much enjoyed Carmen channelling The Undertaker ... or should that be 'inventing the Undertaker gimmick four years before his debut' ... in the finale, though
