On the surface, there's an argument that this relationship has possibly damaged her relationship with WWE, but framing it differently, you could argue she loves her boyfriend more than she loves her job, and is simply in a position to make choices in favour of him, instead of them. That's not *that* bonkers is it? Just seems very patronising to see her as incapable of rational thought because she's some young girl and he's a bit older.

I don't sense there's much of a sexist vibe personally - if the situation was exactly as described, I don't think it'd be an issue at all. You mention AJ Lee as the example (which proves it's not sexist anyway, surely?), and it has nothing to do with Punk and Del Rio, it's the nature of what the "choices" actually are. AJ Lee left the company because they were suing her husband, she was caught in the middle, and even though it meant the end of her career in WWE, it was a perfectly understandable situation. Paige has failed two wellness tests in a very short period, and if they're willing to go out on a limb, it's clearly not a procedural issue where, gee golly, things just got messed up and it's all a mistake and things aren't right. Say there's double standards and different rules, that's probably true, but as Vince said in 96 when he suspended Scott Hall conveniently right after he gave notice to go to WCW, "if you don't want to be suspended, don't fail the test".

If Paige is so besotted with Alberto that she feels it's worth more to her to be with him than to have the career and the money, so be it, nothing wrong with that, different people value different things. But when you're that young and they haven't been together than long, from an onlooker's perspective it's going with short-term emotion over long-term logic, and if it was a guy dropping a promising WWE run with a lot of money because the company let go the girlfriend, people would question him exactly the same.

Jerry Lawler quit the company because they fired his wife, and he got a bunch of people joking about him. He was also seen in some ways as doing a good thing, but there's a difference in that Del Rio left of his own volition, and Kat was fired without either her or Lawler getting a decent explanation, so it's a bit more relatable to people. If Kat left the company on her own and then Lawler starting doing things to jeoparise his position in support of her, people would have gotten on him way harder, and that's even with the reality that he's financially set for life and had a full, incredible career.

What I actually find most interesting of all is that WWE actually bothered to out a performer's excuse, when everybody that failed has had one that is probably contentious to some degree, and willingly admitted her illegal, in-company drug use just to prove a point. Think about how pissed they had to be that she put the blame on the company to willingly expose that.

As Liam said, that really is quite a big thing that seems to be getting lost in all the speculation. When do WWE ever elaborate on their suspension statements? And I don't think they've ever outed a still under contract star for taking illegal drugs before, have they?

She has had pretty decent run with WWE. 5 years is about 4 years longer than most people on here thought she would last. She is just trying to colour her departure as WWE's fault rather than hers. I'm sure PCW are already cranking up the chequebook, and she will be a draw wherever she goes over here for a while.

I remember it was a stick on that Zebra Kid was going back to the big house. The judge decided that his family was better than a prison and, to my understanding, he hasn't refoffended since. Same with Paige. Best place for her is with those who will look after her.

Not content with trying to be Gus Fring, Del Rio also apparently wants to be Dana White:

CHAMPION AND ICON ALBERTO “EL PATRON" JOINS COMBATE AMERICAS AS PRESIDENT

Former WWE heavyweight champion takes on new moniker “El Presidente” as well as executive role with the leading Hispanic MMA sports franchise

NEW YORK, October 11 – Combate Americas, the premier Hispanic Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) sports franchise, today announced that it has named multiple-time professional world wrestling champion and former Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) star Alberto “El Presidente” Rodriguez, formerly known as Alberto Del Rio and Alberto El Patron, as its president.

A former WWE World Heavyweight Champion, Rodriguez, the son of Lucha Libre legend Dos Caras, Sr., also competed in 14 professional MMA bouts – 2 of them under the promotion of former Japanese juggernaut PRIDE Fighting Championships - between 2001 and 2010, as Alberto “Dos Caras, Jr.” Rodriguez. He compiled an overall record of 9-5 in the sport, with 7 of his victories coming by way of submission.

In his new executive role with Combate Americas, “El Presidente” will be actively involved in all aspects of athlete relations and development, from recruitment to enhancing their showmanship skills.

“A storied fighter, with a following throughout Mexico and the U.S., Alberto brings a tremendous amount of knowledge of what it means to be in competition, coupled with an ability to communicate his passion for the sport, to his new role,” said Campbell McLaren, Combate Americas founder and CEO. “From working with Alberto in the past, we have gotten to know him very well, and are thrilled to have him on our team in an executive capacity.”

“I am excited to enter a new chapter in my career in combat sports, and to have the opportunity to spearhead the Combate Americas mission of delivering to fight fans everywhere, an authentic and first-rate Hispanic MMA product,” said Rodriguez.

Following in his father’s footsteps, Rodriguez made his professional wrestling debut in 2000, eventually signing with the WWE where he took on the “Del Rio” name and became the league’s only competitor in history to win both the “Royal Rumble” and the “Money in the Bank” ladder match in the same calendar year – 2011.

Over the course of two tenures with the WWE, Rodriguez faced and defeated a collection of top rival champions and other superstars in the sport, including fellow Mexican hero Rey Mysterio, John Cena, Dolph Ziggler and Randy Orton.

As a member of the Mexican National Greco-Roman wrestling team in the late ‘90s, Rodriguez won the Central American and Caribbean Games in his weight division three times.

Rodriguez will make his public debut as “El Presidente” this week, during the first-ever Combate Americas live event in New York on Friday, Oct. 14 at Turning Stone Resort Casino in Verona.

The seven-bout, “Combate Americas: Empire Rising” card will be headlined by the league’s first world championship showdown in history – a bantamweight (135 pounds) title fight between ferocious rising stars John “Sexy Mexy” Castaneda (11-2) of Mankato, Minn. and Gustavo Lopez (6-1) of Las Vegas, Nev. via Yakima, Wash.
