Doomed anecdotal megathread #2

Stag Do's are hell for coughing up cash. Having someone you don't know contact you and ask for cash feels fucking uncomfortable. Looking back now I feel a bit guilty for the money I asked from people who were all close mates when I organised my friends. At the time I had a fair bit of cash in the bank for once in my life so anyone who was short that wanted to come I shouted the money. I didn't make anyone pay until the day of either. I think it made everyone more comfortable to take the burden of pay now! away. It's the ones where they want you to go somewhere on a trip that do me in.

We did a trip over the border to Cambodia for a friends stag and it was awful, having to pay for everything he wanted on a whim seemed to be the theme and while we were on a tropical beach he insisted we sit in the darkest most disgusting bar all day instead of being on the beach.

I'm getting married next year in Vietnam and i've given no pressure to family and friends to come. Some are some are staying at home. I'm not bothering with a stag as i'd rather save the time off to go on the honeymoon and I just don't fancy a boozy lads night out. Instead i've said i'll have a both gender inclusive night out when everyone comes over if the dates match up which i'm looking forward to far more.

Stag and Hen do's can really fuck up friendships

I told him I can't afford it and....well, yeah.

He responded in the most petty, childish way, asking why I agreed to go in the first place and said it's not his fault people have pulled out. He offered to pay for me but said he needs it back soon because he's "not been in the best of positions financially for years", and then tried to turn some of the blame onto me by saying I was putting lots of pressure on him to let us all know what was happening at the beginning and that it seemed like I was "up for anything".

I told him I'm not letting him pay for me for obvious reasons, but then later in the day he said in the Facebook group that he's paid for everybody who hasn't yet sent him the extra money, and that we can pay him back in our own time. I'm going to pay him £1 a month or something equally ridiculous.

This stag is going to be great.

He sounds like a bit of a nob @Slapnut and he is 100% to blame for it.

You pretty much need to go now so you don’t look like a dick. However I’d personally tell him on FB so there is written evidence, that whilst appreciated, he shouldn’t have, you understand his money is apparently tight but yours is also very tight and it’s going to be quite a while until you can acquire those funds, hence why you were planning not to go.

At least then you have something tangible to refer to if he ends up being a massive cock about it after the stag. So far it’s identical to the one I mentioned earlier.

Dont let it ruin the stag and make sure the groom is kept away from any bickering mate.

How many are going in total and are you the only one he’s paid for?

Yeah I've already told him on Facebook that it'll be a while before I can pay him back. This was before he said everybody could pay him back in their own time though, so I think he's realised he's putting people in a shitty position.

I think there are 10 going and I know a few haven't paid but not sure how many. At least 3 of us for certain.

It's done now though. I won't say anything to him (unless provoked) for the sake of the groom.

and noxious, presumably?

I don't know, but I would venture to guess not. That it has an "-x" rather than a "-ce" would suggest it's linguistically from a different root, but I'll need to research that.

EDIT: A check says you're right! It comes from the noun form, "noxa" - "harm".

One of my favourite bits of word trivia: the words "cybernetic" and "governor" come from the same word in Greek for "helmsman", but because of the different transliteration methods, they acquired different phonemes. The word is κυβερνης, which can be transliterated as either "kybernes/cybernes" or "kubernes". We get "cybernetic" from the first transliteration, and "governor" from the Latin "gubernator", which in turn stems from the second transliteration of the Greek.

A similar one is the origin of the Ku Klux Klan's name. It supposedly originated from the Greek κυκλος, or "kuklos", or, as we more familiarly know it, "cyclos", or "circle". It may have been something to do with Nathan Bedford Forrest's initial desire to form the Klan as an attempt to give America their own modern version of the Knights of the Round Table, or the Red Branch Knights of Armagh.

I enjoy the irony that "Gubernator" is the perfect title for a porn film about a cybernetic killer sent back from the future.

Come on! Aren't you the one who started the specific thread for words, Harmo?

There was an inkling in the back of my mind that we'd had a thread about words recently... I'm glad I wasn't the one who started it, that would have been a terrible lapse of memory on my part!

I don't know how many of you follow the wrestling scene on Twitter, if you do, you might be aware of a promotion called Canuck Pro in Canada who announced a load of shows due to be kicking off around now, that were absolutely LOADED with top Britwres guys, ROH names, Penta etc.

Turned out to be a complete farce and they've disappeared off the face of the earth without ever running a single show.  A shame really, as I designed three event posters for them which i'd honestly put up there with some of the best stuff i've ever done.

Anyway, scrolling through Twitter this afternoon I spotted one of my old Canuck posters.  This one to be precise...

Curious as to why someone was posting artwork from a cancelled event as I scrolled back up to take a look at the tweet.  It was only then I noticed something peculiar.  See it wasn't my artwork at all.  Well.  Look, i'm not saying it's deliberate or anything.  Maybe we just both like that colour scheme, and had identical briefs in terms of a moody luchador looming in a stormy sky, I dunno...  Anyway....

^^^ That's what I saw.  Funny thing is, i've seen other designers lose their shit over similar situations, but i'm genuinely flatterered that anyone deemed my stuff good enough that they'd want to try and copy it.

Tickled me that has.
