Awards Moderator Onyx2 Posted September 19, 2017 Awards Moderator Posted September 19, 2017 Sandwiches for sale, London 1972. I just found this on Reddit and shared it at work. It's sparked so much discussion. No falafel wrap or satay halloumi skewers here. The choices of fillings! The nasty Mother's Pride with the black stripe down the side! Everything dripping with cress! Bar Six! SOSAGE! Sandwich weights! Old school Golden Wonder! The pies! And what makes chicken salad such a delicacy to push it into such a high price? Quote

Just looking at that gave me an incredibly vivid mental image of my sandwich being handed across the counter, mashed between huge, grubby fingers. I suspect most people's immediate thought will be "Ah, the good old days!" but I can't bear the dryness of bread that's been exposed to the air longer than it takes to make and eat a sandwich, unless it's a baguette, of course. That said, it doesn't look like there's an ounce of disgusting mayonnaise to be seen. If, like me, you're not a fan of that vile Farmer's Cum, then 90% of shop-bought sandwiches are off-limits. Mind you, a 2017 ponce like me would likely be beaten to death by the proprietor for being the kind of la-di-da that knows how to spell 'sausage' correctly. The 'salad' sandwiches look like fucking Swamp Thing. Edited September 19, 2017 by Astro Hollywood Quote
Moderators Chest Rockwell Posted September 19, 2017 Moderators Posted September 19, 2017 The dryness for sure, and the general unsanitary nature of the whole 'sandwich stack' method. It'll be one of those tiny walk in sandwich shops too, with the door propped open. Disgusting. Quote

Back then it was a scrape of marge, and salad cream for an exotic sandwich. "I’d like some bread and salad cream." Quote

Moderators Astro Hollywood Posted September 19, 2017 Moderators Posted September 19, 2017 The pies look like those papier-mache hospital bedpans. Quote

Moderators Chest Rockwell Posted September 19, 2017 Moderators Posted September 19, 2017 I actually thought those were stacked upside down cardboard carrying trays. They would never fucking have them though, so I realise now how ridiculous that idea was. Quote
Paid Members PunkStep Posted September 19, 2017 Paid Members Posted September 19, 2017 That's a fascinating pic Onyx. I love looking at shit like that and laughed out loud when I got to SOSAGE. I remember when our neighbours used to look after us during the 6 weeks holidays- the amount of Vitalite she used to coat our sandwiches in was gross. Primary ingredients of the sandwiches were, in order of quantity: Vitalite, smelly egg, bread, cress. Quote
Moderators neil Posted September 19, 2017 Moderators Posted September 19, 2017 Originally I had a good laugh at that and thought "the good old days", but then I remembered the complete lack of refrigeration and flashbacks to school lunches where my Mum would pack me a cheese sandwich on a 30 degree day...gross Quote
Paid Members Devon Malcolm Posted September 19, 2017 Paid Members Posted September 19, 2017 Or if she did you an egg one and by the time it got to lunch the yolk had started to turn a kind of morbid grey. I want to moan about these new Leon 'fast food' places that are popping up all over the place. Popped into the one near Piccadilly a few weeks ago and asked for a bacon and egg sandwich. Sat down, opened it up - and it had fucking spinach in it! Nearly threw it at them. Quote

Paid Members Devon Malcolm Posted September 19, 2017 Paid Members Posted September 19, 2017 I'd normally go to Burger King but there was a massive queue and I was starving. Also, I thought Pret was Pret for cunts. Fucking hate them. Quote
