I remember Vaughan’s terrible sitcom “‘Orrible” being panned at the time, did not know he had a late night talk show on the BBC though.

I feel like on here 90% of you will be going "how did he not know that" but a YouTube video on the Big Breakfast just taught me that Johnnie Vaughn had been in prison before his media career for dealing cocaine and he and Denise Van Outen had huge backstage issues on The Big Breakfast.

He sounds like a total twat tbh the more I looked. I'm quite happy his career peaked then and he has been doing radio ever since.

This is covered a bit in the Big Breakfast thread but they always used to refer to it as his "days in the Navy" on the show.

Always assumed that's why he never worked in the states.

Yeah, caught at a service station by the drug squad and sent down, which he talked about on the Millennium Eve Big Breakfast that ran through the night. Another knock on him was being so Mockney Cockney when he was from quite an affluent, public school background.

Again I did not know that about him. I always had him down as a working class Cockney lad, done well.

I guess maybe he was a scholarship kid? I dunno.

I think dad had his own business and mom had a pretty decent job too, so he wasn't just a good luck case.

Similar cases are Mark Thomas (mom and dad both had decent jobs, he had a scholarship, but leaned into the man of the people role) and Bob Mills (from Chester, came down to London and stayed and had to become Pete Beale to fit in).

Not a guy from money, but I do remember watching Dave Allen, who's one of my favourite comedians ever, and hearing him rant about episodes in the supermarket, the post office, cars, holidays, relatives, all without any real economic or political alignment... then he mentions that he lives in Kensington, and you know he's fucking loaded.

I knew about his prison spell, but had no idea about the backstage issues. I knew he hated Kelly Brooke, but I thought him and Denise were bosom buddies.

I think money issues between him and Denise became a thing when they tried to get the old magic again for more recent ventures on radio.

Kelly Brook is on Heart these days and while she's a bit loud and annoying she's generally harmless. Hard not to be bosom buddies with her, though!

Denise Van Outen has said the first fall out was when the Big Breakfast was killing it. She found out Johnny Vaughan was negotiating to get a better deal for himself and he hadn’t told her. She thought they were a team/double act and that the success of the show was down to both of them and their on screen chemistry. This made her think he perhaps didn’t see it that way.

Yeah it just seems so odd with him. She has said she thought they were genuinely good friends but that he just completely ghosted her post show. He comes across as pretty fake in hindsight.

there's the odd bit on his radio show that I like, but he comes across as very disingenuous on it, and it's like stepping back in time into early '00s lad culture radio with him constantly cracking jokes with his sidekicks and the crew. But then, it is Radio X, the station for men who still wish it was 2004.

They seem to be ok now. They've done Celebrity Gogglebox together recently.
