Browser Brady Posted December 21, 2025 Posted December 21, 2025 A stupid question but whats the best way to start running a 5k ? Is it just try and do 5k or start smaller and work up to it ? Quote
Paid Members gmoney Posted December 21, 2025 Paid Members Posted December 21, 2025 (edited) If you currently do no running at all, it'll be much better to build up to it. There's something called Couch to 5k that is pretty established and will be able give you a decent template to get there. That said, I know someone who claims to have run a marathon with almost no training. He's a lying pisshead though. Edited December 21, 2025 by gmoney Quote

If you try and run it and you're not fit enough the chances of you not finishing/injuring yourself are pretty high. Personally, I would download the coach to 5k app, it's very staggered which helps. Or find your local park run and maybe accept you might have to walk some of it as you build your fitness up. Best of luck either way! Quote

I would personally avoid using the "over and under/hook grip" as this often results in a torn bicep Yeah definitely deadlift is quite possibly one of the best bang for your buck exercises there is, and conventional grip is definitely the way to go, hook grip may help shift more weight at times but it is too much of a risk. Paid Members I Bent My Wookie Posted January 28 Paid Members Posted January 28 Finally made the decision to get back into the gym this week/next (picking the key card up today). I wouldn't say I'm massively bigger than I used to be but if I was eating a bit more frequent I'd easily say I'm 3 or 4 stone heavier than when I started/left uni 10 years ago and it's not in a good way. Years of beer, processed crap and autistic eating traits have me probably eating my 5 a day over the course of a week rather than a day and this is the age all my family's metabolism seemed to just go belly (literally) up. I doubt I'll ever fully get back down to my running weight before Uni but it'd be nice to get close or a little healthier and more toned. Thinking I may have to go Couch to 5K to even get back to my previous running ability but I like the challenge. Quote
deathrey Posted January 28 Posted January 28 Best of luck @I Bent My Wookie. The first steps are always the hardest, but once you get going, I'm sure you'll start to enjoy it again, especially if you used to run a lot. I find January the most difficult month to get motivated in regards to the gym. It's always full of New Years Resolutioners (more power to them but from a personal point, the gym is super busy, I can't get on any equipment and they do a set and then spend 20 minutes on their phone before doing another one - just get on with it) and I find actually getting out of the house physically difficult. I usually go to the gym in my work lunch break (I work from home) and it's so warm under my heated blanket, I don't want to go out in the cold. I've only managed 4 visits this month but I'm determined to go today and Friday Quote

I’ve had all tests and follow up appointments and been given the all clear. Apparently my constant bouts of exhaustion and breathlessness are anxiety and lack of fitness even though I do a job where I can walk up to ten miles a day and do a decent gym work out 5 days a week. On top of that I have the occasional bout of excruciating plantar fasciitis and two permanently bad knees. The icing on the cake came the other week when my last good body part gave up on me and standing still doing absolutely nothing I got shot in the arse cheek and have had sciatica since. Gym helps but what absolutely did not was deadlifting. Dumb fuck. Pretty shit couple of years gym wise. Still got a nice 160kg clean bench though. Quote
Tamura Posted January 30 Posted January 30 A month and a bit into the new fitness regime, and things have gone very well despite a couple of weeks of slacking off exercise due to a throat infection. Considering I'm the wrong side of 50 I'm considering it a miracle that I've lost 9 kilos in that time. Only another 18 kilos to get to my target weight. Quote

Members SuperBacon Posted March 8 Members Posted March 8 So I mentioned in the chippy thread I'd felt ill after a dodgy battered sausage, that turned into full on food poisoning and the last 72 hours have been absolutely shit...literally. It seems that pooing what is apparently a never ending reservoir out of your arse, means that when you're then sick there is nothing to bring up. So despite being sick maybe 30 times a day for the last two days, I've not actually brought much up. Its been grim to say the least. Every time I'd settle or have a sip of water, I'd just set back off again. I've managed to have a tiny bit of lucozade (god what I'd give for a proper one...we used to be a proper country etc) and a digestive. When I was this sick previously, I remember the last thing I ate was that spring onion salsa I grew very fond of, and that has traumatised me with those ingredients and haven't touched them since. What if this is the end of chippy tea? No more dog dicks. That would be devastating, but that's how I'm feeling about it at the moment, but then obviously I'm feeling that way about all foods. Really can't believe this, I wanna run to you @ On top of that it's my youngest birthday in the week, we have something planned for today which I'll now miss. This happens EVERY birthday with her and her Mum, and one of us is always ill. Used to joke about curses, starting to think it's real. Still, fever dreams are quite fun. Went gun range shooting with John Cena last night, so every cloud. Quote
deathrey Posted March 12 Posted March 12 I pulled a muscle in my back doing the glamorous and difficult job of putting the empty rack back in the dishwasher. It's meant I've not been able to go to the gym in a few weeks which has meant other aches and pains have started again. Work has been really busy so fitting the gym in to my lunch break has become impossible. So, for the first time ever in my life, I woke up at 5.45am and was in the gym working out before 6.30am, I was back in time to get the kids up and ready for school and I'm pretty surprised to say, I feel really good for it and think I will be making this a weekly thing! I never in a million years thought I was capable of waking up early and going to the gym, I'm actually quite shocked that I've done it. And more shocked that I really enjoyed it. My gym has an outdoor swimming pool, I wonder if I could do some outdoor swimming in the summer?! I may set that as a little challenge for myself Quote
Paid Members gmoney Posted March 12 Paid Members Posted March 12 (edited) I've got a wedding in May and I absolutely refuse to buy a new suit for it, so I've got a weight-loss goal. I feel like I've been beset with minor illness constantly since the new year, so I've not had the energy for the gym, but through dieting I've lost just under a stone, and I'll need to lose around another to cut a fine figure in my suit and not look like someone's pulled a ripcord. I'm really pleased to have made that much progress through dieting alone. Once I feel brave enough to get in the gym I'm hoping it will fall off. Edited March 12 by gmoney Quote
