The last couple of years they have seemed to underestimate demand at the derby winter showing, having to source emergency stock from local brewers one year if I recall correctly, so I hope they get the balance right with a bigger selling point. Anyhoo, getting to my point.. I'm having a London Sour from them, it's less than 3% but has a unreal smell of a wine. Completely different to anything I've ever had before. Would just be intriuged to know if anyone has any dealings or experiences with the Kernel. Quote
Cheesy Peas Posted February 9, 2014 Posted February 9, 2014 WestCoastPop619 - I've had a couple of the Kernel pale ales, which are nice enough, but for me their best ones are the Brown Ale and Imperial Stout. The range of ales they distribute seems to change quite a lot, so I don't think I've been able to try anything more than once. But if you can, definitely get the brown ale. Quote

In Britain we've had small local breweries brewing ales in small batches for the local market for centuries. Now it's small to mid size breweries acting like what they do is special. Quote

Has anyone drinking a pint of lager in a pub really ever been chastised by a stranger about their chosen drink? Of course you'll get a number of wanky types attached but you get with everything, films, music, food & now beer. The number of people like this about is vastly exaggerated. In Britain we've had small local breweries brewing ales in small batches for the local market for centuries. Now it's small to mid size breweries acting like what they do is special. The increase in popularity of real/craft ales has meant the same small breweries are now in a position where they can actually make some money from a dying pub industry. People 'acting like what they do is special' is called marketing. Would you rather local indy brewers made less money but didn't use social media, blogs & suchlike to try & sell more beer? To keep their integrity? The buzz will die down & something else will come along for hipster food bloggers to wank over. If the end result of the 'craft beer revolution' is that the norm is 5 or 6 casks per pub as opposed to the 2 or 3 previous we had previously? Then that's a definite positive for everyone. Quote

My local bottle shop has had virtually all of their stuff in and I've tried the lot, there's nothing they make that I'd give less than a solid 8/10. Some of their IPAs especially are absolutely incredible. If you're ever in north London, there's one or two places that have their stuff on draught, including the Black Heart in Camden. They're not the small company they make themselves out to be in their advertising. Or you have Brewdog with their "Punk Brewing Company" gimmickry and idiots eat it up. As for local breweries near me there's Bay's Brewery who I wish would spend as much time and effort making a nice beer, as they do marketing themselves, rather than making the bland piss they brew. I would much rather drink something from Otter Brewery or Teignworthy brewery who whilst they're smaller make better beers. Yet Bay's are fucking prolific locally and their stuff is piss. Quote

King's Cross St Pancras has a beer and wine shop. They're reasonably enough priced and they have some chairs and tables, and for an extra quid, you can sit in and have it. All quite pleasant, and the Kernel IPA was particularly nice. If you're in London, Lowlanders over in Covent Garden has some really good European beers in, including Delirium Tremens on tap. It's scarily drinkable for how strong it is - it's the kind where you start to feel warm after a while. I found it really tasty, and it's one I recommend. Edited February 10, 2014 by Chris B Quote

Kernel stuff is all plain brown paper looking labels, very lo-fi. Meantime is made by the Meantime brewery, getting really popular around London. Camden Helles is by the camden town brewery. Both pretty good, although I've gone off Meantime a little bit just through having had it loads. It seems to be the beer of choice at some of the big arts venues these days. Definitely keep your eyes peeled for Kernel beers though, you really won't be disappointed. Quote
