Members SuperBacon Posted January 21, 2023 Members Posted January 21, 2023 FYI @Keith Houchen Fight The Power: How Hip Hop Changed The World, the new documentary series fronted by Chuck D, is on BBC Two tonight (all episodes are actually on the iplayer now) High hopes for this, and as I mentioned in the Documentary thread, I really hope this has something new to say about the story of rap. Hopefully get through it all this weekend. Tonight on BBC Two, the first two episodes are followed by a Behind The Beat PE Special and the often shown Hip Hop At The BBC which is well worth watching for the surreal sight of Eric B & Rakim and LL Cool J on TOTP and a wicked Gang Starr performance on Jools Holland. I got this brilliant book at Christmas, The Come Up by Jonathan Abrams, which is an 'Oral history of the rise of hip hop' and is well recommended. Told mostly through interviews, it's pretty in depth, so pick it up if that sort of thing interests you. Oh, and Oddisee has a new album out which is great news. Haven't heard yet, but again, have high hopes. Quote

Really??? And Monie Love is ALWAYS in these bloody things) and features a very small number of women from the genre and absolutely zero about southern rap, its still a brilliant documentary with lots of new insights and context to rap. The first episode is absolutely brilliant, one of the best documentaries on the birth of hip hop I've ever seen, and I've pretty much seen them all. Also, I could listen to KRS talk all day. He's got such a brilliant voice hasn't he? Well worth your time if you're a fan of hip hop or not. Quote

I'm trying to Google search hip hop clubs/bars in the area but it's only bringing up cocktail bars and restaurants for some reason. Any recommendations? Something a bit chill that plays multiple genres. Or even a mix of funk, soul, jazz etc? Quote

Asked a friend who works in art and is way way cooler than me, and she says Bob Bar is decent, but most places are just bars, and not clubs. Lower East Side. No idea if that is near Brooklyn or not, I don't know NY geography that well. Have fun! I'll make it there one day. Quote
