It was just another incident that it reminded me of. A bit like "Curtis Axel" debuting with the titan-tron that said "Curt Axel" the first time. If the Brain gaffed, it was forgetting that they were running with "The Narcissist Lex Luger" (as evidenced by the fact they'd designed that Narcissist video wall logo) and still calling him Narcissus, not just saying "Narcissus" on the night like a crazy man. Â It's possible somebody pointed out that "hang on, anybody who remembers Mania VIII or bought the tape knows the bloke's name is Lex Luger." Â EDIT - Eddie said it while I was typing. Â I never believed that. What exactly was he giving away? A result we all expected anyway? It wasn't like Cena vs Punk where the decision was on a knife edge. The only result that anyone expected was a Luger win. I believe the theory that Vince thought it would be even better if he waited another half a year until WrestleMania and win it there. Lex's momentum was long since dead, though. Â In summer '93 the plan was (according to Hitman's book) for Lex to win the belt at Mania X and then defend it against Bret at King of the Ring, although Vince hadn't decided who would win. Bret's story would have still been "evil brother" up to Mania X but with Bret winning on the night to put a cap on it. Bizarrely, Vince envisaged it being with Bruce and Bret had to convince him it would work better with Owen. Â No idea at what point Vince decided it wasn't going to be Lex to take the belt, it's obvious to assume that the finish to the Rumble was to test the relative popularity of both Luger and Hart, at least in Providence, so the doubt was already creeping in for Vince. The theories that the phone poll they ran as to who should get the title shot was to aid Vince's decision is bullshit, as he told Bret the night after the Rumble that he'd be getting the belt at Mania X. Â Luger was lightening in a bottle, the time was SummerSlam or it was never. Him allowing the "no rematches" clause made him look stupid, and then failing to take the title in his perceived only shot made him look a loser. There was no coming back from that. Even if he'd won the Rumble properly, it was clear people were sick of Stars And Stripes Forever. Â Have I ever mentioned how much I love the indent thing that starts WWE programming, with the fireworks, nice little piano tune and 'Then, now, forever'? Just makes it feel special and puts you in the mood. Â Me too. It's much better than the previous one. It makes me think "Ahhhh, the wrestling. It's been good to me." Like Triple H put on Chord Assist on the Yamaha in the office and stumbled across the I, V, IV progression. At least the old one was a bit more bombastic.
