diamond_dust
Remember when Dragon Kid was going to be the greatest thing ever according to some mags/tape traders. Oops. Â Huh isn't Dragon Kid one of the top names in Dragon Gate or are you talking about a different guy? Â Same one - he's a big name only in the promotion that trained him where he was expected to surpass the level of stardom Ultimo Dragon found across the world and it's taken him a decade longer than it should've to break into the American scene. Paid Members IANdrewDiceClay Posted April 27, 2012 Author Paid Members Share Posted April 27, 2012 Well, if WCW and ECW would have collapsed before the Ultimo Dragon's era, where would all these Mexican and Japanese high flyers ended up? Timing has a lot to do with it. If it wasn't for ECW targeting a certain market and WCW experimenting with different styles of wrestling to fill their programming, we probably wouldn't have seen Rey, Juventud, Psicosis and all in a mainstream setting. You cant blame Dragon Kid for not having a forum to show his stuff. Â Take Davey Richards for example. Even if he was good enough, he could never be the next Chris Benoit or Dynamite Kid (like a lot of people were/are touting him to be). There aren't the varied places around the world to make a living anymore.

Why did it take so long from him to show up in RoH and why was it only a couple of matches when they prided themselves on bringing in the best Japanese talent? Why did he never make it to UWA or any other promotion that showcased cruiserweights? Even Dragon himself said back in the mid 00's that Kid hadn't progressed as he should. Paid Members Up Chuck Posted April 28, 2012 Paid Members Share Posted April 28, 2012 Take Davey Richards for example. There aren't the varied places around the world to make a living anymore. Â This is probably the best comment on Richards I've seen on here in ages. He gets a lot of deserved hate, but people forget that he did, at one point, have a ton of potential. If he'd gone around the world and got some seasoning he'd be great now. How much time has he spent in Japan? I forget, but it seems to me that more time there could've done him wonders and given him a better understanding of the origins of the style he gets vilified for now. Â I remember Samoa Joe, on that brilliant shoot with Punk, giving advice to people coming into ROH in the future to not go out and try to do strong style, because "ain't none of y'all strong style." This is exactly Richards' problem - you can see what he wants to do, but he hasn't been around enough places to figure out all the ins and outs of making what he does have meaning. Because he can't. Because they're not there. Â That reminds me - anyone know how the other "next Chris Benoit", Fergal Devitt, is getting on these days? Does he look like he could be a WWE prospect? The King Of Swing
Devitt is doing quite well for himself in New Japan I think.
King Pitcos
From everything I've ever heard of him, Prince Dervitt is the greatest wrestler that ever lived. I've only ever heard of him in one fanzine though.

Paid Members air_raid Posted April 28, 2012 Paid Members Share Posted April 28, 2012 Devitt is highly decorated in their junior ranks, has beaten nigh on fucking everyone and is basically one of their most dependable/highly rated junior heavyweights, his first reign as champion lasting a year and his current reign lasting since September thus far. Â It's next to impossible to say if he'd do anything in WWE. He has great "New Japan junior" style matches which are worlds apart from WWE style matches, and quite a few of his crowd-popping moves he wouldnt be allowed to bring with him, including his primary finisher the Bloody Sunday. While due to the success of Daniel Bryan we can no longer suggest he's too small to make it in WWE, over in New Japan he has to show virtually no "character" other than typical GRRRR Fighting Spirit, and being able to show some semblance of character makes the difference between a Daniel Bryan and an Evan Bourne. Â I'd love to be proven wrong and see him make it over there. Fergal is a lovely bloke, and a Spurs fan to boot. Although it does only take three tins of Heineken to render him legless. Richie Freebird
I remember seeing pictures of the CZW guys in around 2000 or so and thought there might be something there, if for no other reason Nate Hatred, Zandig, Justice Pain and the Wifebeater all had the bodies of a WWF wrestler. I couldn't quite understand why none of them ever made it to a WWF tryout. Â Zandig did actually get a tryout once.
Paid Members Egg Shen Posted April 29, 2012 Paid Members Share Posted April 29, 2012 someone should dig out Silky Kisser's 'Wrestlers that fucking stink' thread, this thread has brought to light some cracking candidates for that thread.  In fact i think you could have taken anyone outta IWA Mid South locker room around the turn of the millenium and bet some good money on them that they fucking buzzed, feast your eyes on these ripe muthafuckers...  Cash Flo  Mean Mitch Page  Corporal Robinson

Paid Members ShortOrderCook Posted April 29, 2012 Paid Members Share Posted April 29, 2012 Don't think these have been mentioned yet, here's a few names i remember seeing/hearing about from indies, WWE Developmental Powerslam banged on about and awesome OVW talent that took forever to get called up but were destined for greatness.   Brody Steele.  Part of a group called the Kardinal Sinners that also once included current TNA champ Bobby Roode i believe. Big dude, with not a whole lot of talent. Was involved in a big way in an indy wrestling reality show, which featured on TWC and covered the inner workings of the wrestling business in a candid manner, while also showing the actual shows. An interesting experiment, it was actually a pretty decent watch.   Johnny Kashmere  One half of the Backseat Boyz who i seemed to always see getting mentioned all over the place. Now officially out of the closet apparently.   The Dupps  Signed to WWE Developmental, they stayed there and never did anything besides one of them banging Miss Kitty. Which everyone including Jerry Lawler was well aware of. Eventually released, probably the same time as Kat herself was released.   Johnny Jeter  In OVW for years and years. Touted as a future star, possibly even being one of the many given the classic 'next HBK' tag. Eventually got called up to the big time after being told to cut his hair as part of the fantastically entertaining Spirit Squat as JOHNNY! I'm pretty sure there was mild outrage from some fans that this incredible talent was being wasted in such a way. Didn't matter though, eventually he was kept around post Spirit Squad and had his chance to do his thing solo as a serious act competing in a battle royale on Raw. He may have had some other matches but i don't remember as he shortly after faded into obscurity. No idea if he did anything since.
LWOLeN
Always felt uncomfortable as a kid with those porno style April Hunter bullshit shots in those WOW magazines. Like I'm going to hang up a poster of a half naked women who looks bigger than the average pro wrestler!? Â I remember being really dissapointed when I saw her on WCW as a valet of the nWo 2000. Hall & Nash really dropped in stock in my book when they surrounded themselfs with her. Good riddance.
The Brain
If we were talking about the late 80's/early 90's Indy Wank then Tony 'Boston Bad Boy' Rumble, Italian Stallion and George South would surely be the leaders of the pack. IWCCW and PWF
