The Truffle Hunters (cinema)

One of those documentaries about a subject you probably have no interest in but end up having a great time with it anyway. Wholesome, very funny, and serious when it needs to be, also features probably the best ending of any film this year. Tremendous.

Didn't know the best place to post this, but whilst watching Uprising I spotted a familiar face during the Black People's Day of Action march.

Some of the marchers started looting a jewellers and it was those doing the security for the march who got things back under control.  Clive Myers, not a bad person to have on your security team.

The Sparks Brothers - My knowledge of Sparks is sparse, but an Edgar Wright documentary about a band many big bands cite as influences and have been going for 5 decades, was something to check out. For his first documentary I thought he did a good job. The Maels seem like decent blokes. You learn very little about them, but what they do allow you to know was great. And the talking heads ranging from all parts of culture from Comedy, Music and even Joan of Arc, seem to really love the band. It will lead me down a Sparks rabbit hole. It’s long, over 2 hours, but there is a lot of ground to cover. I reckon fans will love it, but enjoyable for non fans as well.

Also went to see The Sparks Brothers today and thought it was great.  I'm a big fan and my Wife enjoys a selection of their stuff too. We were in Bournemouth to see them on tour a couple of years ago with Beck and Edgar Wright was in the audience so I think a lot of the filming may have been done around that time.

As someone who joined the fandom late, around the time just before Hippopotamus came out, a lot of it was really interesting to me as I knew some bits, but not a lot. The bit where Tim Burton pulls out was touching and it was great to see them rebound from it so incredibly. They're both just fascinating people. I was worried I was going to leave the cinema disliking them after the first hour where every band they ever had says how they fucked them off in a strop after every album but they do a good job of not leaning too hard on it and everyone seems to be over it.

Would recommend if you like Sparks, but not if you don't as there's not much but a career retrospective.

Misha and the Wolves (cinema)

There's a case to be had that this story didn't deserve to be told considering the hundreds of thousands of Holocaust survivor stories that will never be told. And it's very much the modern 'documentary as thriller' style that Netflix have flogged to death. But there are some interesting themes discussed here and the story is fascinating, if not maybe worth a cinema visit to see it.

I forgot about the doc thread or would have posted my thoughts on it in here - but yeah, agreed on all of that. It's also a Storyville film, so it'll be on iPlayer before too long, I'd have thought.

Not sure if it's mentioned or not but there was a documentary on Channel 5 with Ben Fogle who went into Chernobyl. Was absolutely fascinating and not too bad from someone I don't tend to watch that often.

The Alpinist (cinema)

Went to see this on the same day I saw No Time to Die so at least it wasn't a completely wasted cinema trip. Obviously absolutely terrifying to watch a man scale a sheer rock face with no equipment, and even more so when it's covered in ice and there's a blizzard on the go, but still impossible not to be amazed by. Actually delves into the psychology behind such a pursuit rather than just trying to shock the audience. Really good.

Is there a way to view the most viewed documentaries on YouTube?

I've just been re-watching the AlphaGo documentary which I find fascinating, and it has 27m views. I'm aware popularity doesn't always correlate with quality, but I can't find a way to find the most popular ones. A Google search just yeilds results such as "30 documentaries you should watch on YouTube" etc.

cant you just filter your search by view count?

Yeah I ended up searching for "documentary" then ordered by view count, that seems to do the trick, and this seems to be the highest with 71m views. I haven't seen it before but I'll have a look at some point.

That loose change documentary mentioned earlier seems to have been taken down/made private as it doesn't feature anywhere in the search results. There might be some other more popular stuff that's geographically restricted.

Gives me a few to go on anyway.
