Paid Members Arch Stanton Posted January 3, 2013 Paid Members Posted January 3, 2013 Apologies for the double post, but thought this would be interesting to people on here. Further to our discussions about the PS50 and John Cena, I wrote in to the Powerslam mailbag section giving my thoughts, and comparing Cena and Kofi Kingston to show how his exclusion was quite silly. I also asked about The Young Bucks being two places apart. I was pretty reasonable I thought, and it was clearly marked as a letter for them to consider printing. I got a reply this morning from the man himself... Reminds me of the time I emailed PowerSlam back in January of 2006 to call him out on his constant bashing of John Cena, Chris Masters and Mark Henry. I got a similarly arsey and overly defensive response from 'Findlay' too. Funny that almost seven years on those three lads are considered by many of the most knowledgeable fans on here to be top class workers. Quote
Paid Members air_raid Posted January 3, 2013 Paid Members Posted January 3, 2013 "I write extensively about Cena each issue. I didn't think it was necessary to explain his omission from The PS 50. But since you've asked . . . The Kane feud was a joke. His match with Rock was sloppy, nonsensical and interminable. Cena injured Rock with that ridiculous legdrop. The Lesnar match was exciting, you're right about that. The Laurinaitis match was lousy . . . His bouts in general make no sense. They are bereft of psychology. Remember the knee injury in the Ziggler feud? What was the point of it? He didn't sell it all. It played no part in their Ladder match. His execution of moves is poor, his selling is embarrassing, he damages opponents, and loudly calls spots, thus making suspension of disbelief impossible. Cena has succeeded in making sloppy, half-arsed wrestling acceptable -- to some, anyway. That is his legacy. Kingston is a solid guy, who put together a number of good matches, and generally was a credit to the business. That's why he was ranked. Kofi Kingston had zero matches that will be remembered in a year's time, Cena had many. What an idiotic self-indulgent response. Fin has completely missed the point of pro wrestling (beyond drawing the gate/buyrate) which is to create drama and illicit emotional reaction from your audience. The best worker is the guy that gets the crowd to make the most noise, psychology is knowing how to make the crowd care/react/make noise, whether it's three punches and a big boot, putting a sock on your hand or adjusting your trainers. The Kane feud was crap though. Quote

I don't disagree, my point was that he has main evented 9/12 PPVs, had the most promoted match in a decade with Rock and had a MOTY candidate with Lesnar - one more MOTY candidate than Kofi... Quote
Paid Members air_raid Posted January 23, 2013 Paid Members Posted January 23, 2013 In this month's issue, Fin criticizes (justifiably, in my mind) how easily Cena has beaten Dolph Ziggler in their televised matches and how Ziggler's win at TLC was hammered home as something he would not have achieved without AJ's help. As usual however, it's not so much the sentiment but how it's presented that makes Fin come across as a bitter little supersmark : "My only complaint is that (Ryback/Kane/Bryan vs Shield) should have headlined the show. It was far better than the inconsistent main event polluted by John Cena's interpretation of pro wrestling, and the predictable run-in booked to preserve SuperCena's image of superiority." "The match was too long and, since Ziggler had to win, featured a we-must-safeguard-Cena-because-he's-losing-and-no-one-except-The Rock-is-allowed-to-cleanly-beat-him finish." Yes, that was actually published. Like a five year old's writing, isn't it? Fin also has thoughts on the much-discussed Cena proposed heel turn : "If Cena were to capitalize on and solicit boos as a heel, it could be dynamite. But as written before, too many parents buy their offspring Cena merch for WWE to risk alienating them. Cena would also have to deviate from his current ring routine, sell effectively and, crucially, put people over to make a heel character work. That's not going to happen, either." He would't put people over??? Pretty sure if the writers said to Cena "you're losing to Sheamus tonight" he'd do it?? Cena's never struck me as anything other than an obedient company man. As a long-time reader, Fin's hatred of Cena has actually changed from tiresome to hilarious. I think he's just trolling now. Polluted by John Cena's interpretation of pro wrestling. Fantastic. Quote
Paid Members Carbomb Posted January 23, 2013 Paid Members Posted January 23, 2013 Interesting that he conveniently ignores how Cena recently put Brock over as an absolute monster. But then he'd probably just mention that Cena's win negates that. Quote
Paid Members ColinBollocks Posted January 23, 2013 Paid Members Posted January 23, 2013 Nah, Cena should never be put on the same level as Ziggler, ever. Ziggler was fucked the moment they had him lose to everybody in nothing matches; it's been hammered home the last couple of years that Ziggler is a loser. Cena has a big re-match with The Rock coming up, while Ziggler will do well to have a memorable World title run for a few weeks. I was amazed Ziggler went over at TLC, even with AJ helping out, IMO WWE did well by Ziggler - giving Ziggler a win which protects both men. Quote
Paid Members air_raid Posted January 23, 2013 Paid Members Posted January 23, 2013 Nah, Cena should never be put on the same level as Ziggler, ever. They worked a main event together, and Ziggler is about to become World Champion. No, he can't be on the same level as Cena, nobody can, there's only room at the top for one. And no, he probably shouldn't be beating Cena cleanly. But his win shouldn't have been presented as a complete fluke that was more about AJ turning than Ziggler winning. When Cena got laid out by Langston the next night during the formation of their little trio, it was even AJ's music that played in the aftermath for fuck's sake. Quote
Paid Members ColinBollocks Posted January 23, 2013 Paid Members Posted January 23, 2013 (edited) By "same level" I was on about the way Ziggler is portrayed in matches or feuds with Cena. Logically, it makes sense that a bloke that loses all the time and hides behind powerful women needed the help of one to beat the top dog. I do agree that AJ's music playing instead of Ziggler's is odd (I forgot all about that), but WWE see AJ as the bigger star and the better story to push. It's just the way things are for Ziggler. But then he'd probably just mention that Cena's win negates that. If I remember correctly, he claimed Cena doing a goodbye speech negated the whole match. But he peppered it with complaints I had never heard of since or before about Cena's unprofessional conduct, hence probably bollocks. Quote

Knowing Fin he probably chastised Cena for being so sprightly having just been in an utter war, and not selling that he was hurt. In fact, did Cena not say words to the effect that he was "feeling good tonight Chicago" or something like that? Were they in Chicago, or am I daydreaming again? Quote
Paid Members WWFChilli Posted January 24, 2013 Paid Members Posted January 24, 2013 (edited) They were in Chicago, you are correct Raid. Fin just hates Cena doesn't he. If Cena DID do a heel turn he'd try and pick every hole imaginable in it. Surely no other magazine writer has held such a pathetic dislike over a wrestler. Paid Members Accident Prone Posted January 24, 2013 Paid Members Posted January 24, 2013 I used to enjoy his Cena bashing back in my younger days (wow, it's hard to believe that Cena has been the main man for almost eight years) but his pieces about him now just come across as childish, one-dimensional and bitter. He sounds like that one guy who never grew out of listening to Disturbed and Drowning Pool so he constantly bitches about chart music like a lonely teenager. Quote
Paid Members SpiritOfTheForest Posted April 5, 2013 Paid Members Posted April 5, 2013 I actually enjoy Powerslam quite a bit whenever I pick it up but seeing as a lot of you guys don't, I figured some of you might get a kick out of this which happened today: Quote
Paid Members IANdrewDiceClay Posted April 5, 2013 Paid Members Posted April 5, 2013 (edited) That seems more like Jericho's thin skin being exposed (again) more than anything else. I think it was air_raid* who said it before. I'm sure Fin Martin is trolling 95% of the time. There's a lot of stuff that reads like he's taking the piss out of his readers. Although if he is being serious, fuck knows where he's getting that from. Whatever your thoughts on Fandango and Jericho, I'd rather see Mo vs Downtown Bruno than Miz and Barrett. EDIT: *air_raid actually said it on this page. Small forum. Edited April 5, 2013 by IANdrewDiceClay Quote
