I've spent part of last night and this morning watching a 3 hour retrospective of Namco's PS1 era, a good Irish lad has put it together and Namco really was the coolest developer for a time, weren't they?

PS1 era Ridge Racer is still my favourite ever period of arcade racer, the soundtracks were never beaten.

My copy of The Oral History of Gamesmaster arrived on Monday and I’ve just finished it.

The books more about Dominik Diamonds nights out with his mates then it is the actual show.

Took my 9yo to High Score in Southampton today, which was really fun.

£9.95 for an hour (could've done with 90 minutes) but despite a group of about 10 mental boys walking in just ahead of us. We got to go on everything we wanted to.

We went on Dance Dance Revolution first and because I couldn't figure out how to change the song, we did it to Pet Shop Boys Always On My Mind, which wasn't too taxing.

Then we played Atari Centipede Chaos on the massive screen which was excellent fun, although it took me 5 minutes to realise you could move up and down as well as left and right.

Then she had a go on Prop Cycle which really is so clunky, but a good laugh.

Luigis Mansion Arcade is OK. A fun weapon (a vacuum style thing) but the controls and instructions are a bit shit.

Then we played Sega Rally, which was uncomfortable for me to even get in, then blasted some SHITTY ZOMBIES on Sega Golden Gun. Loads of fun, and way better than Time Crisis 4, which we abandoned after about 30 seconds as it was crap.

Then it was time for 'active' games and we had a decent amount of time on Alpine Racers, Snowboarder and a sort of Snow Bike game, before I spotted the After Burner cabinet! 9yo loved being thrown around in it, and thought it was hilarious.

Giant Tetris was a bit cumbersome, R-Tuned good fun, but then my mood took a downturn as she smashed me at Tekken 4 rounds in a row, we played Crazy Taxi for a bit (better on PS) and then ended it off on this Batman game.

I had zero idea what I was doing, but completed a few missions, then we had a super quick go on Alien Extermination and Outrun and the hour was done.

We both had a real blast, everything was pretty much available straight away, so a definite recommend if you're ever near one.

I've spent enough time in Southampton to basically owe them council tax yet had no idea such a place existed. Always wanted to try a proper After Burner cabinet, so you've sold me on a trip posthaste.

It's just off the main high street, round the corner from the "gate" if that makes sense.

Having said that, it's not an enclosed cabinet I'm afraid. It's two chairs sort of facing each other. Still well worth a visit though.

I had no idea that this even existed!

My favourite ever arcade-style experience was playing Mario Kart VR in Tokyo. It's pretty surreal to look downwards and see the body of the character you've selected, and when you're driving around, if you pick up a shell, for example, you get to throw it at opponents with your own hands. It works so well.

Luigi's Mansion (granted, NOT in VR form) as an arcade game with a vacuum control sounds like a brilliant idea on paper.

We played Luigi's Mansion Arcade in Disneyland Paris on our honeymoon and it was a decent laugh. Arcades are so expensive these days you have one go and call it quits though. In a home setting, even with a Switch peripheral it would be huge because it is very unique and responsive.

It was all a bit confusing as to how you played, but I suppose when you're up against time and want to try as many games as possible in the hour, you don't really pay as much attention as you probably should.

I'm sure with a bit more time, it would've been more understandable and fun.

But yeah the control is very cool.

I know "Arcades are dead" but there have been some decent games out in the last decade. Batman is one I always end up with, even though its not great, the fact you can choose so many classic cars is great. Star Wars Battlepod is a real favorite. Basically flying a vehicle from a key scene from the films with a huge dome screen like a mini Imax. Lots of fun. Tomb Raider as an arcade light game shouldn't work, but does and does pretty well. But my most recent favourite is Sega's Mission Impossible. Huge machine which allows multiple games to take place at once but really enjoyed it.
