I think Warworld is the movie that gathers Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman together to be part of Crisis.

A few years ago I was going to get rid of a lot of DC animated movies on DVD based on how lame the Teen Titans one was with Beast Boy going on Kevin Smith's podcast at the end. Then ended up getting everything on Blu-ray instead in a total reverse. Only things not out in this region are All Star Superman, Green Lantern - First Flight, Justice League - Doom and Crisis on Two Earths, so have bought those digitally to watch again soon too.

Warner don't region lock so if you wish you can get the US releases of those no problem.

You know what? I really liked the new Superman, and I think I may have preferred the humour to GOTG as well. It's not perfect, tries to be cute a little too often and the CGI is the typical farmed out rubbish but there is an actual soul in here unlike the Snyder slop.

I've added some thoughts on the early Marvel anime movies The Monster of Frankenstein and Dracula - Sovereign of the Damned in the VHS and Betamax thread. Look great, sound dodgy.

Following a few years of being fed up and inundated by lacklustre offerings, I've spent the holidays catching up on all things Marvel. Spoilers below...

 

 

Captain America: Brave New World - The fact that most of the action doesn't appear in the trailer, and there's a whole geopolitical subplot that didn't receive a mention in the hype says it all. The focus on red hulk kept me from enjoying the film as I kept thinking "where is it?" and lo and behold, the whole thing takes place in the final 10 minutes. I enjoyed falcon and winter soldier, and this was a nice continuation. Steve Rogers is still the best Cap, and Sam Wilson is not quite up to standard. That being said, the action scenes were good and it helps push the universe towards it's next bit adventure. Harrison Ford is the standout. 3/5

The Marvels - Unashamedly, I enjoyed Ms Marvel, and this was a friendly space romp that reminded me of the first guardians film (without the greatness). It killed 2 hours, the storyline lacked any real danger and the cast was decent enough. It's clear to see why this has been slated, and certainly feels lacklustre compared to other Marvel films, but it isn't as bad as people make out; the comedic moments help lift this up from being too serious, and Goose is a highlight. The villain lacked any real presence but the end credits made up for any disappointment. 3/5

Black Panther - I've slept on this one and I regret it massively. The storyline, acting, action and script were all fantastic. The only bum note struck was the dodgy CGI in the panther face off at the end. That said, it's definitely one of the top 3 Marvel films, and Wakanda was presented well. I now totally understand why people were so devastated with Boseman's death. 5/5

Thunderbolts - The concept of weaker protagonists taking on the world's most powerful being was handled well, as was the topic of mental health. Florence Pugh is the stand out performer and the action flowed well enough. I felt this could have had more of a first act to establish them working as a team, but it's good. Again, nowhere near as bad as the box office suggests and the end credits made me excited for what's to come. 4/5

 

Quantumania, Wakanda Forever and Fantastic Four up next...

I had absolutely no issue with The Marvels. I thought they all worked well together.

Thunderbolts I hope a lot more people watch at home because it was way better than it should've been.

How come you haven’t seen Black Panther before? The others you’ve watched are all newer post Endgame films when a lot of people were burned out, so I’m curious how you missed out on BP.

It was one that passed me by initially - I was starting to feel done by the time infinity war came out and I stupidly thought it wouldn't add much to what I'd already seen. Then Bosewick died and it put me off because I didn't want to invest in a character to find he'd be replaced. Stupid logic, but I know the error or my ways.

It's definitely deserving of a rewatch, and has made me want to venture into Ironheart.

Just watched the new Superman, finally. Fuck, its good. Just fun, colourful, and hope filled. Yeah, very much a win for me.

 

Started Peacemaker S2 as well. The intro isn't as fun as the first, but its growing on me. The show is actually pretty good too, Cena isn't a shabby actor at all.

Because I'm an absolute div who hates myself, I've been watching all the Marvel films from the beginning. All of the feature films, not just the MCU! Here are my quick thoughts so far;

Howard The Duck - Mentioned this in another thread a few weeks back, but its reputation as 'one of the worst films ever' is massively overstated. It's actually quite charming in its own odd way. Really funny that the biggest franchise of all time can be traced back to this film.

Blade - It's good, but not quite as good as I'd remembered. Still a decent way to pass a few hours. Incredibly of its time. Kris Kristofferson is fucking class.

X-Men - Does a really good job at worldbuilding, introducing the characters and getting the various personalities across to people who don't necessarily know them, and also moves the plot along and does all of this in around one hour 40. A really efficient bit of screenwriting that you just don't get anymore, this would be 2 hours 30 now. (Also, Famke Janssen).

Blade II - Biggest letdown so far. I remember really liking this when I was younger, and I think it's still got a decent reputation now. I don't know why - it's shit. Starts with them completely retconning the original film then gets more tiresome from there.

Spider-Man - Now we're talking! Much like X-Men this does a great job of setting up the universe, and is just a really strong film. The best portrayal of Peter Parker by far too.

Daredevil - Shit, but in a much more endearing way than Blade II. I mentioned Blade being of its time - this even more so, in that 'throw a moody rock song in this scene to convey emotional stakes instead of working harder on the script' that was all the rage in 2003. Still, I did have some fun with this! Colin Farrell comes out unscathed.

X2 - The pick of the bunch so far. Builds upon the original in pretty much every way, introduces even more people to the cast (none of whom are served poorly) and has Brian Cox in a typically cracking turn as the villian. This is really good. (Also, Famke Janssen).

Hulk - I'd forgotten just how weird this was. A Hulk film where the only action scenes (up until the CGI mess finale) are Hulk fighting mutant dogs and some helicopters. Hats off to Ang Lee, he obviously tried to do something different here and make a film about familial issues, memory and repressed trauma more than capes, but he completely fucked the pacing up to the point you're begging for a CGI fuckathon to break out. A failure, but an admirable one.

It's crazy how good the original two X-Men and Spiderman movies were. Easily the high points of the entire genre and by a significant margin. I don't think anyone knows how to make films like that anymore. Rock solid structures, real stakes, full of character, tight as a drum screenplays. I'm not sure at what point Hollywood forgot how to do big blockbusters like that.
