Willow was so good here that Mercedes isn’t getting anywhere near enough praise for cutting probably the best promo of her career. No cartoonish laughing, no over the top inflections in her speech - just something that felt believable and real, but remarkably bitter and unfair. Exactly what you’d want from your top female heel. I couldn’t call the result of this one. Part of me thinks Willow should win, another thinks an incredible story could be told if her title reign was cut short and she was forced to regroup chase the belt one more time. Either way, you’re spot on - she should be positioned as their next big babyface; as being at the same level as Hangman, Darby and Ospreay. Quote
burchybabi Posted July 31 Posted July 31 The Hurt Syndicate returned with a random one off Collision match which I feel was relatively recent (well probably about 1-2 months ago now) and in the post match interview said they are no longer interested in titles, just money then disappeared again. Love the idea of the matches being random draws as a selling point, even though there’s never been an indication that any other tournament has been done any other way. At least in the first round, I guess the difference here is no brackets and it’s random in every round? There might be more to that aspect, people not knowing who their opponent will be from round to round, but I guess if they insist on having the Continental Title defended year round, it’s still something a bit different to just having matches like all the others. Collision was fine. Sick of commentators talking about how they like Moxley all the time. He likes to murder people! Stop it! And while we’re at it, Moxley is apparently totally fine with Ospreay again already. I’m in a real “sick of the Death Riders” phase again. Jamie Hayter took a properly nasty throw into the steps from Megan Bayne, really hit the side of her head by the looks of it. Edited July 31 by HarmonicGenerator MCMG in AEW is … fine, I guess? Quote
BrodyGraham Posted July 31 Posted July 31 I missed MCMG in their pomp as it were so I don't really have much investment in them as a team, but right from the early days of ROH, through his TNA title run to now, I've always considered Chris Sabin to be one of the dullest wrestlers in wrestling. Hopefully they prove me wrong, but it feels like a waste of a perfectly good Alex Shelley. Quote

The three big matches are all in a good place and don't need much more build so it'd be cool to see the majority of the TV leading up to the show focusing on building up the mid/under card matches as much as possible. Good Collision this week too. The womens trios was the sleeper match of the week - they beat the absolute shite out of eachother, it was awesome. Brutal match. And Daniel Garcia is such an excellent pro wrestler. I think that was easily one of Ospreay's better matches due to Garcia's brilliant work. Ospreay powering up during a submission and pulling off his elbow pad to signal the Hidden Blade was a fantastic babyface spot that he needs to add to his repertoire in every big natch he has. Good week for AEW. Helped by a beautiful venue and the perfect crowd. Quote
The King Of Swing Posted August 2 Posted August 2 Yeah that was a banger week, of AEW TV. Women's trios match on Collision, was a cracker. I'd love to see Athena Vs. Hazuki, for the ROH title. Hell I think AEW, should try to sign Hazuki, if she is interested. Been a big fan of hers for years and she's quickly getting over with AEW fans. Nick Wayne is really finding himself, imo. Love his shit head trash talking and I think he's one of the better sellers in AEW. Perfect midcard guy, for the bigger stars to slap around. Only real downside this week was no Thekla. Guessing they wanted to keep the focus on Willow and Mercedes, this week. Quote

Mone was Mone but I've realized she'll always be a WWE robot on the mic, just gotta pretend the soulless fake acting is part of... the act? Paid Members Statto Posted August 2 Paid Members Posted August 2 Just had a catch up on the week's AEW TV, few random thoughts: - Alex Shelley is one of my top 10 all time favourite wrestlers, so stoked to see him in AEW. Chris Sabin... I can live with as Alex Shelley's tag partner. I do think their look these days is particularly amusing with Alex retaining the crazy cool cyberpunk sort of aesthetic while Sabin stands next to him with his botox face and sensible haircut. - The Continental Cup... on board with the idea of a competition leading to a cup final at Wembley, that's a nice idea. But making it the second time in the year the Continental Championship has to be defended in a tournament whilst it also continues to be a regularly defended belt is so maddening. I'm assuming this'll effectively be a vehicle to set up a Moxley match for Wembley without much "storyline". - I'd assumed we'd be headed for Andrade-MJF at Wembley with both the stolen ring and National Championship (both of which seem kinda low rent for that and let's not forget, MJF is not actually the current official winner of the ring, this is just one of his old ones...) but with Andrade going into the Casino Gauntlet I'm now guessing MJF will return as a 'surprise' in that, as will Swerve? Part of me is cool with them absolutely stacking that match with top stars - it is after all for a World Championship match and no-one ever says a particular top star is wasted on a big event by being in the Royal Rumble match, but the problem the Casino Gauntlet has compared to that is a) it lacks the "get to be in the main event of the biggest show of the year" element of the prize, by dint of happening at said event & b) it lacks the "once annual special happening" feel. Even though I don't recall there having been a men's one since last All In, there was randomly a women's one at a week's notice in free TV just the other week. Quote

It's either that or Moxley vs McGuinness...? Maybe they've been shadow building to that with Mox joining commentary on Collision so often and I just haven't noticed. Unless one of the purposes of the tournament is to get Moxley out so he can be involved in Team Dog Riders in whatever big schmozz they do, in which case the you're most likely looking at Nigel vs... one of the Conglomeration lads, most likely Orange? But then you've got face vs face (in Wembley anyway) with little heat for a title no-one really cares about. Quote
