Just watched the highlights on iPlayer. Forgive my ignorance, but I thought they were Czechia now? Have they gone back to Czech Republic?

Decided to abandon my 3am alarm and catch up this morning. No game or highlights on ITVX or ITV YouTube at 6am. But the Beeb had the highlights up. Still the best.

One to make @SuperBacon cry but I watched the Spain 1-5 Holland game on Beeb YouTube last night. Was presented from the BBC's base right on the beach in Rio. They were simpler times when the Beeb wasn't just another pawn in the political game.

Enjoyable game last night. The three red cards were mad but I don't think there's much arguing with any of them. The last one I was surprised was a red but I like it. It was a proper cynical foul and I'd like to see them punished more often.

Lovely moment for Raul Jiminez. Helped to start to feel like the football tournament is about, you know, football.

South Korea looked good I thought, I'd like to see them march on a bit in this tournament.

I'd love Sonny to go far and do well of course, and can definitely see them making the last 16/quarters.

Watched the 3am game last night probably against my better judgement but was a good watch, South Korea looked really good in moments and probably should have finished a few chances (Son missed about 3-4 good chances). Czech as expected more physical and looked dangerous on free kicks and corners.

Annoyingly I missed the second South Korea goal as I went for a piss, came back and it was 2-1, didn't even catch the replays and wasn't going to wait to see the winning goal at full time.

Referee let quite a few challenges go, 1 yellow at the end of the game but probably could have been a few on each side, the polar opposite to the earlier game in that respect.

Czechia is the shortened, more English (and tourist) friendly name of the Czech Republic. It only really became commonly used in the mid-2010s when the Czech government offiically approved its use and then everyone else began adopting it. I think a lot of people abroad still thought the country was called 'Czechoslovakia', so it's helped with that, if nothing else.

It divides opinion over here. My Czech wife is not a fan, but a lot of people are either fine with it or don't care as it doesn't impact their life much. I personally don't really like it and would never call it that. Sounds too much like Chechnya to me, but I can see why other people would rather use it than Czech Republic.

That ref cam has got the potential to record some iconic footage over the tournament. I was sceptical first, but after it showed that early Son miss from a few feet behind him, I can now see the potential of it!

Just shows that the World Cup is still a useful measuring tool. I keep up with World Cup qualifying and the continental tournaments so it's obvious South Korea are a very good side in Asia but years ago, that wouldn't have meant much against a middling European side like the Czechs. South Korea are miles better than them though. Other than, fitting the steotypes nicely, set peices, the Czechs are nowhere near as good technically, couldn't match them for movement and invention and have no-one with the flair or pace that almost all the Koreans seem to have. They're an excellent unit. Fuck knows how they and Japan have failed to win the last two AFC titles.

Nope: the BBC is ignoring Czechia's government's request from 2016 to use that form, as it is, if its group tables are indicative, Türkiye's request, too. FIFA, on the other hand, are abiding by the requests.

One curiosity to note: the country's name hasn't changed. It's still the Czech Republic formally, but they would like the shortened form to be used. There's nothing new in this: nobody refers to the Federal Republic of Germany by its formal name, nor the French Republic. We truncate ours, too; we'll happily speak of “the UK” or “the United Kingdom” but only in the most formal of circumstances is “the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland” used.

They have quite a few videos from the Prem/Bundesliga/Serie a on YouTube that last a couple of minutes, and I think they're quite fun, ref cam can stay.

It is a bit off putting that on the biggest stage of all, the refs look like they're about to take part in a Laser Quest session though :)

South Africa really can't play out from the back.  They couldn't really play forward either to be fair. Don't expect them to get any points in that group.

Top shithousery from the linesman in the Czech Republic/South Korea game. As Soucek thought he put the Czechs in front, and ran off towards the byline to celebrate. He ran straight up to the linesman, who then put his flag up for offside.

There was a suggestion before the tournament that the semi-automated offside tech is faster now. I wondered if the lino had been informed about it?

On that, they said VAR will give corners now but there were two in the opening game at either end that were wrongly given as goal kicks and nothing happened.

Edit:

Catching up on The Rest Is Football on Netflix while working. Micah is appealling to Harry Kane to break Lineker's World Cup scoring record to shut Lineker up and Shearer says to Lineker: "I know what you'll be saying, it keeps me relevant. You're not fucking relevant. You're off the BBC and you're on Netflix with us." It's absolutely hilarious but doesn't say much for Netflix!

Apparently the rule is...

- If a corner has been awarded but should be a goal kick then VAR can intervene

- But they can't do so if a goal kick has been awarded that should have been a corner.

The reasoning being that they wouldn't want a team to incorrectly score from a corner.
