Honestly, those £10 fake pro controllers on Aliexpress are somehow almost as good as the originals. Wouldn't be surprised if they use the same schematics but cheap out on no rumble or NFC stuff.

Right, is there or will there be new versions of Animal Crossing or Stardew Valley?

If so, maybe I'll get one for the kids as I don't mind paying the price for things that they play for 4000 hours or whatever ridiculous stats my eldest is currently on.

I don't think it is comparable with an Xbox Elite controller at all because you get the basic Xbox or PS5 controllers for free if you buy those consoles and both are fantastic.

People's milage might vary but I found the joycons awful to use in extended sessions on the Switch. I found a Pro controller essential tbh.

I mean to be technical about it you get two controllers free with the Switch, and an adapter to make one full controller. I agree though even with the adapter I never got on with the Switch controller as standard.

In the four seconds it was on screen during the presentation, Professor Layton and the New World of Steam appeared to go from an announced Switch 1 game to a Switch 2 exclusive.

Not the biggest admirer of that franchise in the world, but if that proves to be the case then it's looking like a broken promise from Nintendo which could make fans less inclined to trust them in future. If it's still coming out on the original Switch after all then they should've shown off more footage during last week's Direct.

I only got my Switch halfway through the current generation so it would've taken a lot of convincing to make me rush to order its successor at launch, or even this year.

Really intrigued by them trying to get 3D Donkey Kong right at last, but that plus one or two other little things aren't enough in itself to justify dropping £400+ on it anytime soon.

With how massive my back catalogue is across Playstation, Xbox and Switch, I can probably hold out a few years before getting a Switch 2.

I don’t see why it would, that kind of thing happens all the time and has done for years - Super Paper Mario started off as a GameCube game before moving to Wii and Star Fox Adventures was an N64 game before moving to GameCube, for example. I don’t see this even registering with people.

There was nothing in the short time it was shown to indicate the Switch version is cancelled and it’s a Switch 2 exclusive either. Genuinely no idea why Fog has came to that conclusion.

I might be wrong but it's process of elimination, basically. Every other game either getting an enhanced version or that's been stuck in development hell for a while, like Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, was specifically stated as being available on both consoles. Even if I've misunderstood I don't get why Nintendo wouldn't have put fans' minds at ease today?

The examples Twoster gave I remember reading about in magazines as originally intended to be released for the previous console, but those are from before the age of official videos put out by Nintendo with a particular console's logo on it.

I'm going to hold on the Switch 2. I got the Switch first day (most of the money came from selling my Wii I and games) but I played more then as I didn't have a kid. He turns 8 next year and I think great 2026 Christmas present. 

Mario Kart looks amazing (although all Mario Kart games are great). Lots of variety been added and look forward to December next year to play it. 

 

People talked about controllers. I didn't take to the joycons if playing on the tele but I know someone who actually quite likes them. I used a Hori pad that was ace but I rarely played on the tele.

A more recent example would be Microsoft insisting certain games would not be going multiplatform, before doing just that. People did get pissed off about that, but it died down. Even if Professor Layton switches platform, no one will care - particularly when there are still a lot of great games coming to Switch. There might be a few Layton fans who are disappointed, sure. But they can hardly complain given how well supported the Switch has been for so long - I mean fuck, even in its dying years they were releasing fantastic games that could have easily been saved for Switch 2 - Mario Wonder, the new Zelda and the Xenoblade Chronicles X remake. If it has switched system, it’s no big deal.

Yeah, fair enough, it's not gonna cause a huge knock on their share price but it was something that struck me during the Direct which hardly anyone seemed to be talking about. And you're right there've been both some great late-era Switch 1 releases that I'm glad they didn't hold back for the next generation and plenty to get excited about this afternoon even if a lot of it wasn't to my taste.

Nintendo was worried enough about damage to its reputation that we ended up with both Twilight Princess and BotW as cross-gen Zelda titles, but Layton isn't as big of a deal as an IP (to me, or in general). It just feels odd they'd barely acknowledge it last week or this when it was one of the more interesting games whose existence had been already confirmed a while back.

One thing to note about the £50 SD cards is that they’re expensive because they’re Nintendo branded. The Switch had the same ones we sold in store and nobody bought them because you can get generic ones for much cheaper and that will be the case here. 

By the looks of it the joycon adapter this time comes with a charge port too, bringing it even closer to a proper controller. I’m hoping with the new design and bigger buttons on the joycons it makes it a more comfortable way to play with my fat sausage fingers.
