Today is reveal day for the Nintendo switch 2, with an hour long presentation revealing more about the console and games line-up taking place at 2pm UK time. Here’s the direct link if you want to watch it.

With that in mind, I thought I’d create a thread so we can all talk about the new console - clearly there will be more to say after the presentation, but what are you hoping to see? Will you be buying one?

Some of the rumours so far…

* The c-button turns it into a dual-screen device like the Wii U (link to screen rant)

* There may be confirmation of the Final Fantasy IX remake (Metro)

* The joycon can be used as a mouse (Eurogamer)

Nouse functionality seems all but confirmed, although I don’t quite understand the point myself. But we’ll see what they have to showcase it. Either way, 2pm can’t come quickly enough!

A new Mario Kart is confirmed but other than that I predict a new Animal Crossing either today or shortly after launch as I think Nintendo see that as one of their biggest moneymakers now.
My mate said there was rumours of a new 3D Donkey Kong game too. If the mouse rumour is true I wouldn’t be shocked if the built in app with it is Mario Paint 2 or one of the Art Academy games.

I think updated versions of recent or upcoming games like Metroid Prime 4, Tears of the Kingdom, Pokemon, and Monster Hunter.

I think immediate launch lineup is likely Mario Kart, a couple of updated/improved Switch ports, a Mario Paint style application and maybe an outside bet like a new Mario or Elden Ring.

I honestly don’t think it’ll be a strong launch and the hardware I’ve heard described as “between PS4 and PS4 Pro” isn’t going to excite anybody. I’m ready to eat these words too but for me just making Switch 2 is a huge mistake because without that big leap in hardware you may end up with another Wii U on your hands. They need to come out swinging when it comes to differentiating it and showing how this isn’t practically an upgrade to the OLED Switch.

I reckon Elden Ring is inevitable, and I actually wouldn’t be shocked if it was a launch game, or released in the weeks following. I own it on PS5 and Steam Deck, and I’ve completed pretty much everything there is to complete, including the DLC and its absolute bastard of a final boss. But I know for certain I’d buy it again on this console!

I do worry that it’ll be a weak launch line-up. Mario Kart is almost certainly a launch game, but unless it has a Crash Team Racing style single-player campaign or a Forza style approach it’s not the kind of game that is likely plough hours into. I want a meaty single player experience to keep me playing the console, much as we had Breath of the Wild last time round.

I can’t see them releasing two big first party games on launch day, but I certainly hope I’m wrong about that. At a push, I could see them launch with Metroid Prime 4, but it’s not a system seller for me.

(not that there needs to be one, as being a massive fan of everything Nintendo, I’ll still be buying this day one…)

I think Zelda is inevitable too as it has a track record as a bit of a transitional title. TP on Gamecube and Wii, Skyward Sword was the swansong for Wii and Wii U got the Wind Waker/TP Ports, then BOTW on Wii U and Switch. I think we’re definitely due a transitional port or a new mainline title.

I worked in GAME around 2018-2021 as well and Mario Kart was by far our best bundle game for Switch even then. I wouldn’t be shocked to see it do well here either, especially since we’ve been playing 8 since 2014 and it’s the best selling game on both the Wii U and Switch. I’d certainly buy a console for it. I mean, I bought a 3DS with Ridge Racer and Nintendogs so i’ll buy just about anything.

I always told myself that I would only get it at launch if there was a new Mario platformer or a new Zelda game.

But then you mention a FF9 remake and that would absolutely do the trick too.

I’ll believe the remake when I see it to be honest, but if that is announced today, that would be a system seller for me, especially if there were Switch exclusives - like Nintendo-themed Tetra Master cards.

I agree. I’d be stunned if they announced the next main game, but I expect to see something along the lines of the long-rumoured Windwaker remake, perhaps even a collection including Spirit Tracks and Phantom Hourglass, if the dual screen rumour is true.

I’d be amazed if we didn’t see all of the major franchises referenced in some way later.

I reckon Splatoon 4 is also a lock. I don’t care for the franchise myself, but I think it’s inevitable.

As an avowed hater of Tetra Master, I hope any remake does away with it and replaces it with something better. Such as a massive fist bursting from the console and punching me in the face repeatedly.

But Nintendo themed Eidolons I can get on board with. A massive Kirby that can swallow Ozma whole? Yes please. A Waluigi to take out those annoying jester twerps? Give it to me now.

I’d love a Wind Waker re-release/remake. But due to the cel-shaded style, I’m not sure it can really improve visually all that much. Ocarina Of Time and Majora’s Mask however, using an updated engine, could be special.

Is it also asking too much for entire back catalogues of NES, SNES, N64, GameCube and Gameboy to be released on single cartridges for £50?

I never even considered that, but I’d bloody love it if they introduced Nintendo-themed summons! That’s a great idea!

And as brilliant as I think you are, @Dr. Alan Grant, you are 100% wrong about Tetra Master - it pisses all over Triple Triad, and if they do replace it, I’ll be blaming you for willing that into the world ?

I'm guessing the new Pokemon Legends is going to have a Switch 2 version? If not I hope it has a Switch 2 mode for better resolution and framerate etc.

The original trailer referenced it releasing on ‘Nintendo consoles’ so it seems probable to me. Otherwise, I’ve no idea why they worded it like that.

It’s utterly my fault. The part of the brain that is required for understanding the rules of all card games, in video games or otherwise, is absent in mine. Never understood Gwent, I use Auto mode on that Pokémon app, anything that requires tactics and strategy causes my brain to float off like I’m Homer Simpson.

I'm interested in this but I was looking down the Switch games catalogue the other day and the games are so fucking expensive. Even I can't justify forking out £50 for a new Mario or Mario Kart game, as amazing as they always seem to be reported as, when I can get a really good quality platformer on Steam for a fiver. I got a bundle of six Spyro and Crash Bandicoot games for £30 last summer.

If this sounds like me trying to get someone to talk me into getting a Switch 2, that's definitely not what's happening here, no.
