Don't know how anyone could watch that Direct which gave us a new Mario Kart with Diddy Kong Racing features and an open Burnout Paradise/Forza style world, a new Donkey Kong 3D Platformer and an exclusive From Software game and be unhappy with it. Without even getting into the double mouse controls and compatible versions of Civ and Two Point, Gamecube classics, upgraded Switch games and fairly great catalogue of 3rd Party stuff, that was an excellent direct.

It was the lack of big first party games, particularly compared to the Direct for the original Switch. An hour with only a handful of exclusive first party games isn’t what I expected, and the games included aren’t really for me; particularly given that Metroid is cross-platform. And I’ve never really gelled with 3D Metroid games either.

There may well be a very persuasive direct that makes all of the above seem much more appealing to me than they currently do, but as far as playing your best hand goes, this didn’t cut it for me. I’ll buy one eventually for sure, but there’s nothing in the launch window that persuades me to take the plunge quickly.

Although that was true with the original Switch for launch day (I could play BOTW on my Wii U!) and I bought it anyway, so who knows…

I've just realised buying consoles I don't have enough time to play is my weakness. I don't need it, there isn't anything there completely new that I would really want, but I NEED IT.

Seems like some of the Switch 2 upgrades are free if you have Nintendo Online Expansion, similar to the stuff like Mario Kart and Animal Crossing DLC.

Reckon Switch 1s will get a bit cheaper at CEX once the 2s are kicking about? Trying to prevent Animal Crossing: Civil War between the kids but they’re still pricey enough to put me off.

They already had me with Mario Kart at launch but maaan DK Bananza looks delightful as well. Like everyone else I was expecting Elden Ring: Something something edition, but The Duskbloods is an amazing surprise. I hope there are more than 10 units available on launch day.

Surely that's only if you're buying from the Nintendo store, most people won't be.

That and also, while it’s not ideal it will stop scalpers buying all the stock up the second it launches. It gives actual Nintendo fans, the ones who are gonna be wanting one regardless to get theirs. I think it could be done better but anything that fucks the scalpers is fine with me.

From my experience with the Switch, which I mainly play docked, you need a Pro controller and the SD card. Which Nintendo are selling for £75 for the controller and £50 for the SD card. Physical games are £75!

So I'm out. Will probably get one second hand in a few years when there is a new Mario and Zelda out. All the 3rd party games I will play on my Series S, if I haven't already played them where they will be cheaper and run better.

Would a current Pro controller be compatible with the new console? Obviously you wouldn’t be able to use the gamechat feature, but I don’t fancy forking out £75 for a controller on top of the other costs.

I just checked the Switch 1 Pro controller does work. The Switch 1 SD card won't.

List here of Switch 1 stuff that may or not work - https://en-americas-support.nintendo.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/68426/~/nintendo-switch-and-nintendo-switch%26nbsp%3B2-accessory-compatibility

Yeah they explained the express cards in the Direct itself. Not arsed by the Pro Controller 2 price because it’s a completely optional controller and the Pro Controller 1 is probably the best controller on the market.
Compare it in quality and cost to something like the Xbox Elite Controller which might be the least reliable controller in modern gaming, and the £200 PS5 one and there’s really not an issue to be made about an optional controller.
