WWE to Netflix, Network presumably doomed

Years ago there was a show called Wrestlemania All Day Long which had a Wrestlemania 9 documentary on it, but it is impossible to find these days. I’m guessing this is the footage from it, but with the usual talking-heads edited in?

It's only actually a few minutes on the WrestleMania All Day Long, but they did have a huge amount of backstage footage from the show for some reason. They did a True Story of Wrestlemania DVD documentary where it felt like half the footage was backstage stuff from WM9 and it really stood out as obviously being given extra time just because they had the footage. The new documentary is nearly two hours.

The new Mania 9 documentary is highly recommended. Loads of great stuff. I could watch hours of Lex Luger having the time of his life watching old footage of his career.

Fantastic to see Hogan remains as full of shit as ever. Watching the clips of himself back, he remarks, “Jeez! I can’t believe this was only twenty four hours after I got hit with that Jet Ski! Crazy!” Man sounds like he’s in the Beano. It’s so unbelievable that the performers in LA Noire would say it was too obvious. You’re left with no other option than to one hundred percent believe Randy Savage gave him that shiner.

Some fantastic footage in that doc with some great talking heads too. Basil DeVito was interesting and I've always liked seeing Kerwin Silfies pop up on stuff as he's the nearest you'll get to a true TV production voice without being haunted by the sight of Kevin Dunn.

Laughed at the tape archivest putting in that Prime Time episode and bopping along to that lovely theme tune it had.

Fair play to the crew for putting that amazing set together. It's an awful PPV, but visually it's brilliant and I love the big ceremony intro. Heenan backwards on that camel is magnificent!

It was hilariously ridiculous, surprised him and Brother Bruti could keep a straight face with all the bullshit.

Hogan, accidentally held down a button. The jet-ski took off like a rocket. Fell off the jet-ski going 70mph, tried to go under the water but his life jacket brought him to the surface. The jet-ski did a 360 spin and hit him in the face.

Could have just said, fell off a jet-ski and banged my head on the way down. And it cut my head and gave me a black eye.

Ah yes, the jet ski story. Hit him in the face in some kind of magical “only left a black eye ” sweet spot, located directly between “tearing his head off” and “caving his skull in”. Whatever you say, brother

I don't completely not believe the jet-ski story, I mean they've embellished the telling of it, but Hogan's eye looks absolutely fucked. I always wondered given Savage and Hogan had been around each other at all the tapings between his return and Mania what would have made Savage suddenly do it the night before and risk everything going a bit tits up. I'm aware of WHY Savage would, just what would make it occur so incredibly close to showtime. Savage is absolutely hilarious on commentary though with his lines that you could definitely construe he was admitting or alluding to something. Also with Scott Steiner saying he believes it, he really hates Hogan so I reckon he'd absolutely believe Savage. I just don't know, because Hogan is obviously such a embellisher, but I just can't see how all parties (Vince, Hogan, Savage etc) would just all let the matter drop with any consequences be it even fines etc. I do believe he fell off the jet-ski and just banged his head in the area, but with Hogan he somersaulted and the jet-ski did a fucking moonsault or something.

IIRC at the time Fin Martin was convinced he'd got the black eye in some kind of gym accident.

Personally, I don't think Savage hit him. That doc showing Randy getting in the ring to help him celebrate when the PPV is already off the air ; why would he do that if there was legitimate hatred at the time? If it's a Vince directive because the world is watching, fair enough. But they'd gone off the air, what purpose does it serve? Making sure everyone in a car park in Paradise NV knows they're still mates, even though the PPV has finished - who cares? Quieten any dirt sheet rumours? Did Vince really give that much of a fuck?

What I never understood was why they didn't make something of it. The first you see it, IIRC, is him walking to the ring and the announcers being shocked by it. Blame it on a backstage attack by a heel, get some heat on it! I get that Vince never liked his guys to look hurt or blemished, and that maybe he felt that explicitly blaming the black eye on a wrestler would be a tacit acknowledgement that wrestling was violent, which isn't the reputation he wanted when courting a family-friendly audience, so that might be all there is to it, but it's such a weird thing.

They did do this, didn't they? Pretty sure IRS gave a promo where he was like 'It seems Hulk Hogan ran into some trouble when leaving the gym the other day - which just shows you what money can buy!', implying he and Tracksuit Ted were behind the 'hit'.

You'd think so, and yet I haven't been able to find out how to Watch this Wrestling documentary in the usual way I would. I was hoping WWE would upload it to YouTube as they did with SNME (which was on Peacock) - so far, nothing.

On this show having Savage on commentary kills Heenan's act.

He's too aggressive, basically threatening Heenan all through the show while Heenan's act relied on having some patter with the face play-by-play man.

Heenan and Ross are hilarious together, but Savage would have been much better off in the ring on a show that had much worse star power than any previous WM.

Savage, even being carried in during the 'opening ceremony' gets a bigger pop than almost all of the active wrestlers!
