Books is a forgotten one.

Skagboys, which is a prequel to Trainspotting, is pretty shit, and was very unnecessary.

Skagboys made my heart burst! I think it's actually the best book of the bunch, because you get to see the slow corruption of who these people are, versus the chaotic, wisecracking caricatures they are in Trainspotting.

It is the kind of copy that the editors just gave Welsh a pass on though, that you need to be a fan already to appreciate. Renton and the boys are like an EastEnders cast for me so I'll happily read any old shit with them in it.

Fantasy prequels are usually rubbish, if you're going into books. Either someone's widow or grandson paying the bills with pointless added content, or a "I'm still six years off finishing another proper book, here's a pamphlet size prequel that skews young adult" stopgap.

It feels like Philip Pullman took most of my adult life to write the first part of the Book of Dust and it was just a...fine...prequel. There's a guy I've always felt was living on a lot of good credit for His Dark Materials.

Aye, like many crap sequels it very much felt like 'creator needs some money again' was the main driver for that. Though fair shout @Gay as FOOK if you did enjoy.

Also on the video gaming prequel tip, what about the Street Fighter Alpha series? By extension Street Fighters 4 & 5 can be interpreted as prequels to Street Fighter 3 as well, given the off chronological order that the games take place in. Street Fighter 4 definitely feels more like a sequel to Street Fighter 2 than Street Fighter 3 ended up being given how shortly after the original it takes place.

Yeh, SFIII was meant to essentially be "Street Fighter: The Next Generation", but it just wasn't very popular, from what I remember. Bear in mind, Capcom created Alex to be the new main character, and take the spotlight of Ryu (and Ken), but that, along with creating a roster that cut out almost everyone from SFII barring Ryu, Ken, Chun Li, and Akuma/Gouki, was just a step too far.

SFIV definitely did feel like Capcom just said to themselves: "MISTAKE!" and dialled back everything to reinclude the much-loved, original roster.

As to the Alpha/Zero series, they're amongst my favourite fighting games (after most of the SNK ones). Almost by definition, the prequels will be superior games, simply by dint of having been created on superior technology.

Saturday Night Slam Masters/Muscle Bomber could kind of be seen as a prequel to Final Fight as well given that it takes place before Mike Haggar became Mayor of Metro City.

What's also crazy about that is that the inclusion of Cody and Guy in SF Alpha/Zero III means that SNSM and Final Fight come WAY before SFII, and yet Andore and Poison show up in SFIII.

(BTW, I love that Poison is the first transgender woman in gaming, even if it was retconned initially.)

Art Of Fighting is kind of a prequel to the Fatal Fury series as it involves some of the same characters and takes place a few decades beforehand.

Now, I didn't know that. I thought they happened at the same time.

I'll give it another go mate. I was unemployed and depressed when I read it, so will give it another go on the GayAsFook recommendation.

Almost everything Irvine Welsh wrote after Glue is pretty shit. Glue is borderline.

No love for Porno?

Glue is held together by Juice Terry, but again, it's been years since I've read it.

I have Bedroom Secrets and Crime, but haven't read them.

@CarbombArt Of Fighting is supposed to be set in the 70s, one of Geese's Henchmen is a young Jeff Bogard.

Final Fight 0 on Game boy Advance was an interesting one as well. Especially when you unlocked the Alpha Guy & Cody campaigns.

My mistake, I thought it came out before Glue, but while I liked it the first time I read it, but not nearly as much on a re-read. Definitely part of the decline, if not the full descent.

I don't want to get into another debate on the merits of films based on comics AGAIN but X-Men First Class was a prequel and I thought it was brilliant, even if you knew at least four of the major characters weren't going to die and who was going to end up on which side. Though most people into the genre rated it inferior, I thought Days Of Future Past was even better. Of course, they used time travel to instil additional jeopardy, so changing the past meant people could die that were supposed to still be alive in the earlier (release date)/later (chronology) films/stories, so maybe it shouldn't count.

Ditto Star Trek (2009) which I suppose is a reboot rather than a true prequel. But it was a belter either way.

Nope, not bringing up Fire Walk With Me again..

An outside choice would be Ghost In the Shell: Arise, now I still don't know if it's a true prequel or a reimagining that just so happens to be before the film/show/manga but it's one I've really been enjoying lately regardless. Ignoring the live action movie and the new 3D show it's probably the least "intellectual" version but it's still full of intrigue and I just love seeing the Section 9 squad come together over time plus the action is superbly directed, too.

Batou being voiced by the guy who played Piccolo and using the same exact voice is weird though.

Doesn’t count as a true prequel since it was obviously developed first but Drakengard's troll ending turning out to be what lead to the creation of the Nier universe is pretty mental.

Edit.

Drakengard 3 is actually a prequel to the first game I believe. Still can't decide if love it or not, plays like complete ass but is completely bonkers.

Pearl is a decent prequel to X. I think I preferred it to X actually.

Red Dragon is fine. Obviously not as good as Manhunter, but still perfectly watchable and not as bad as Hannibal and Hannibal Rising.

Actually, speaking of that, the Hannibal TV show was really good.

Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp was better than the first one if I remember correctly. Although its been so long since I watched them I can't remember either film at all. I just remember one being lots better than the other.

House of The Dragon was lots of chatting and light on action but was a lot better than I expected.

Is Mad Max: Fury Road a prequel?

I'm really digging deep to find something good.

I've never seen X, and thought Pearl was a perfectly decent film in itself. I never felt I was missing anything.
