I'm sure we had a thread about musicals being rubbish before...

I agree that people covering the Beastie Boys also sounds like hell, especially if their Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame induction is anything to go by, but unless the Beasties Musical is a 2 hour jukebox musical style retelling of Paul Revere I struggle to figure out what the plot would be. It'd be more through morbid curiosity.

Watch Across The Universe. Singings  alright, Evan Rachel Wood is lovely and the actual set designs/direction is great.

That's the one with Eddie Izzard in isn't it? I'm surprised nobody's tried to do a Billy Joel jukebox musical about some plucky young lad called Anthony who lives in Allentown, ends up moving to, and leaving Hollywood, and also manages to have a Vietnam flashback before being falsely accused of arson and reeling off a big list of key events of the second half of the 20th century by way of a defence.

Is Jersey Boys a musical or not? Some of it is them writing the songs which makes sense but a couple of times he belts out songs to fit it with the narrative of the film.

Good stuff.

Meanwhile, West Side Story only made another $10 million during the week. It's the most wonderful time of the year!

when you hate a musical film but a marvel films is the reason it’s bombing at the box office…

Disney probably bought up all the screens forcing Steve in to the art houses and porno theatre’s. Even Spielberg isn’t safe from Uncle Walt’s shitty dick.

He was quick enough to stop his pensioner orgy when he got a free bus trip out. And he nearly fucked it up for Charlie. Although Charlie was a drip. Me, I'm all about Veruca Salt. Her dad was Roy Kinnear and Roy Kinnear was ace.

In fact the ending should have been Willy Wonka giving Roy Kinnear the factory and telling him to stay away from horses.

Remembered this post when I saw the below graphic on FB:

My lad has a fascination with the movie adaptation of Cats at the moment since those bastards put it on Netflix. What a load of bollocks, even Tay Tay is shit. Yet I watched it until the end, even though he’d gone out to play. I might have listened to the chorus of that Mr Mistoffelees one a few times too. I definitely didn’t watch it with him a second time. Look, it’s really hard to look away once it’s started.

Seeing as it was being removed from Netflix, Mrs Loki and I decided to finally watch the Les Miserables film.

Christ almighty.  First of all, it’s thunderously long at over 2 1/2 hours.  Nobody should have to listen to people talksinging for that long.

It also doesn’t help if they can’t really sing.  Hugh Jackman can’t sing.  In the old days they would just dub him with a better singer and everyone would be happy, but no - this director insisted on everyone singing live on set.  So half the cast are out of tune, or a hideously auto tuned straining hoarse nightmare like Jackman.

I watched this musical as a kid on the stage, but as an adult… the story is shit, isn’t it?  A woman gets forced into prostitution, another woman has unrequited love and is then abruptly killed, a bunch of students are massacred for seemingly no reason, a hard working public servant commits suicide, and then the hero dies of nothing apparently (although maybe he got ill from swimming though shit?).

I feel maybe something was lost in translation from the novel.

I heard nightmare stories from colleagues in the industry about how hard the production was and how incredibly hard the post was, with the live singing spliced together first and then the orchestrators having to shoehorn the music over the top afterwards.  And it IS a mess.

But when it works, it’s very powerful - there’s two songs done in one take to camera by the two tragic female characters and they’re brilliant and incredibly emotional.

TL:DR it’s no South Pacific.

Not to reply far too late AND go ludicrously off topic for the thread or anything but the Mash prediction on how Hancock would handle the covid vaccination is brilliant to read with the benefit of hindsight.

“After zoning out while Chris Whitty and Patrick Vallance walk him through the rollout with the help of dreary slides, Hancock will vaccinate the population in a hopelessly piecemeal way, leaving Covid to run amok. Then he’ll use the inevitable third lockdown to do the same again but with a glitchy app.”
