Mark Impact
I think most of what has been mentioned so far has been about a switch, but for me one that sticks out was HHH v Cactus Jack at the 2000 Rumble. Plenty of love for the IC belt too, if anything there was more investment from me there as IC title matches often seemed to be landmark moments during the late 80 and into the 90s. In a similar vein I was into Cena v the Big Show at Mania XX (US Title) because it reminded me of that era. It was Cena's first singles title (I think) and you could tell he was an emerging star
Paid Members ReturnOfTheMack Posted November 12, 2021 Paid Members Share Posted November 12, 2021 Hangman/Omega is the most I have been invested. Before that it was HHH/HBK/Benoit at Mania, and that had me full on yelling at the finish. I'm gutted I can't see the PPV live, due to plans early Sunday, too early to get up on little sleep, too late to just stay awake.
Pinc
During Punk/Cena MITB in Chicago I thought to myself "if Cena wins this, I'm not watching anymore". And I think I meant it.
Paid Members Jazzy G Posted November 12, 2021 Paid Members Share Posted November 12, 2021 Back in 93 I was a massive Lex Luger mark, and got well invested in the idea of him beating Yoko for the title at Summerslam. I was gutted when he won via countout. I got quite into Bret Vs Owen in the steel cage at the following Summerslam. Austin & Shawn at Mania 14, Benoit at Mania 20, Punk at Money In The Bank in 2011, and also when he wrestled Alberto for the title at the Survivor Series. Daniel Bryan at Mania 30 Dave Rayne's final match against Xander Cooper in Futureshock. Naito Vs Okada at Wrestle Kingdom a couple of years back. Josh Alexander's recent run as X-Division Champion and his Impact title shot against Christian Cage. I can be such a big mark sometimes. It'll be the same for Page against Omega tomorrow night. Paid Members Supremo Posted November 12, 2021 Paid Members Share Posted November 12, 2021 Bret vs Undertaker at Summerslam 1997 is the closest I can think to how I feel about Hangman vs. Omega. As an idiot kid, whilst I’d obviously developed good taste (Bret was the best then, he’s even more the best now), I was too young and naive to even consider it a possibility that a wrestler or a promotion would renege on a stipulation. If they said Bret wouldn’t wrestle in the USA again if he lost then I believed Bret wouldn’t wrestle in the USA again if he lost. So I went into that match not only hoping that my favourite would win the belt, but under the one hundred percent belief that if he lost Bret would only wrestle on overseas shows. And how often was that? Once a month at most?! Imagine my delight with that finish. Bret wins the belt. Bret will continue wrestling on all shows. And Bret’s nemesis completely fucked up and had to count the three whilst glaring at him! Yes! Get in! Best finish ever. Daniel Bryan at Mania 30 and Kofi at Mania 35 are the only recent ones that spring to mind. Kofi’s celebration with Xavier, Big E and his kids even had me tearing up. What an indictment of WWE’s booking though that both of those moments were borderline forced upon them by the fans!
Paid Members wandshogun09 Posted November 12, 2021 Paid Members Share Posted November 12, 2021 I was well invested in that Bret vs Undertaker match at SummerSlam as well. For all the same reasons. Throwing Shawn in as the wild card referee just added to it. I was chuffed with the result, wasn’t really into Taker’s title run anyway and always preferred Bret. But in hindsight, even though he got the belt, it was kind of the beginning of the end for Bret. Obviously nobody knew he’d be leaving in a few months but Shawn turning heel off the back of this match and going into a big and totally fresh feud against Taker really left Bret with little going on. I think it was in Wrestling With Shadows there was that bit when he was talking to Pat Patterson and voicing concern that Shawn turning heel was gonna take away his heat and it did really. The US vs Canada thing was kind of played out by the end of 97 and DX was the new thing. Brilliant match though, Bret vs Taker. I think their match at One Night Only was even better but the SummerSlam match had that incredible finish. Speaking of SummerSlam 97 and that stipulation, it pissed me off at the time that The Anvil never came through on his promise that if any of the Hart Foundation lost at SummerSlam, he’d shave the famous pointy beard off. Austin beat Owen and sod all. Anvil Jim’s rocking up on Raw with goatee intact. Let’s see what we could’ve won.
Paid Members air_raid Posted November 12, 2021 Paid Members Share Posted November 12, 2021 As a kid Bret was my favourite wrestler and that never went away, so every WWF title match he ever had was accompanied by sickening fear of him losing and delirium followed by relief every time he won. Going to One Night Only stirred up patriotism I didn’t know I had for Smithers, and it broke my heart when Shawn robbed him. As an adult Benoit became my favourite but it was too smarky to ever give him a chance of winning the big belt until half way through the Angle match at Rumble 2003 which had me on the edge of my seat and felt like a kick in the gut when he lost. Similarly the whole of Mania XX had me on edge wondering if they’d actually take a punt on him as a World champion and we went out on the piss immediately after watching the ending. As soon as he lost it I never entertained the thought of him getting another turn so subsequent shots didn’t affect me, thankfully. Forever tainted anyway. A massive one for me was Danielson v Nigel at ROH Unified, for which I was front row. The prospect of seeing Britain’s first “World Champion” crowned at a time when ROH had become my favourite promotion, at my first live show of theirs, totally took me over despite my fondness for Danielson. My dismay when Bryan won is very visible on the DVD if you know where you’re looking. There’s a lot of “I was there” impact in my later ones. It’s easier to feel something matters when you might share the moment and simply preferring challenger to champion becomes a massive stirring when you might see challenger win in the flesh. Something as insignificant as Austin Aries and Bobby Roode winning the TNA tag belts from Chavo and Hernandez on an Impact taping in Manchester became an enduring memory for me despite those belts having long meant very little. 42 minutes ago, jazzygeofferz said: Dave Rayne's final match against Xander Cooper in Futureshock. I was there too, as you well know. Chris Masters finally getting a crack at (and winning) the PCW title was another. BritWres has a lot to answer for. CCK losing their Progress tag belts back to Moustache Mountain in the six-man for all the belts in Birmingham was another gut punch, obviously now tainted by the involvement of a scumbag. 52 minutes ago, jazzygeofferz said: Naito Vs Okada at Wrestle Kingdom a couple of years back. Ah, which one? If it was the one Naito lost… I was there. Definitely my most expensive heartbreak from wrestling ever.

Winston
Deadly Game Tournament at Survivor Series 98 for me. Peak of my fandom and couldn't wait to see who would walk out of there as the new Champion.
Paid Members tiger_rick Posted November 12, 2021 Paid Members Share Posted November 12, 2021 The two that immediately came to mind were Bret at Mania 10 and Eddie vs. Brock. I was all aboard the Lex Express in 93 if I'm honest but as soon as it came down to Bret or Lex at the Rumble, it was no contest. Bret was my guy. Mania 10 was the first PPV I ever saw live (or on it's first showing on Sky anyway) and I celebrated like a football match when Bret won. Eddie's has always been special to me because I think that was the first moment after I became a jaded smartarse fan that really sucked me in. There was obviously plenty real about that build up and Eddie's brilliant promos, delivered with raw emotion had me rooting for him. 2000 was a big year for being right into everything. In fact, probably going back to late 1999. Survivor Series triple threat between Austin, Rock and Trips had me wetting myself only for it to not happen. Trips and Foley at the Rumble, the Iron Man match with the Taker rumours and the four way at Fully Loaded (?) when I went mad for the Benoit dusty finish! Not too many outside WWE but thd build for Raven in NWA:TNA was really good when he jumped from WWE. Really felt like something interesting and then he lost to Jarrett, like they all did. Wasn't this around the time he was taken off TV for a short time while a contractual issue was delt with, him having signed a contract or two before his WWF one he'd failed to disclose to them which WWF then had to sort for him, and as part of that it was forgotten when he returned to TV. DCW
Big one for me as a kid was RVD vs Angle vs Austin at No Mercy 2001. I was convinced Rob was going to win the big one and join the WWF. When RVD finally won it at ONS 06 I was convinced that due to the screwy finish with Paul E counting the three, the result would be reversed the following night on Raw. Paid Members Cod Eye Posted November 13, 2021 Paid Members Share Posted November 13, 2021 Others have already mentioned it, but Summerslam '92 was the first ever wrestling show I'd seen("American" style, that is. I'd seen the World of Sport stuff) and I was luckily to be there live. I wasn't sure if wrestling was actually for me while watching the show, until the entrances kicked in for the last match. I knew almost immediately that Bret was shit hot, and the Bulldog was the big British hero, and I couldn't decide who I wanted to win. By the end of the match though, I'd fell in love with the sport and my heart was pounding thanks to all the near wins. It's still my favourite match to go back and watch too. Another one was the Bret/Owen cage match. I'd never seen a cage match with as many realistic false finishes, and I was on the edge of my seat throughout. Brilliant stuff... stewdogg
JC Thunder beating Simmons for me. Maybe cause I was invested in the storyline of JC never quite getting the job done, he may have in fact been on some massive losing streak when Simmons and his goons started picking on him. Everytime it looked like JC was getting the upper hand the bad guys would constantly interfere and he’d always fall short. I think he won the IPW version of the Royal Rumble and when he eventually beat Simmons the roof of the Orpington Halls almost came off. I’m sure @Big Benny HG can do it more justice than I can.
