Today I Learned (Wrestling Edition)

Yeah, the High Energy theme (which I think is Jimmy's attempt at doing Suicide Blonde by INXS) came first.

I got a kick out of the Hulk Hogan's Wrestling Boot Band songs at the end of each Hogan documentary episode but disappointed that the gem that is his version of My Thingamabob lives in obscurity.

TIL that WWE has, as of yesterday gone by those initials and the name World Wrestling Entertainment for 24 years meaning it has officially passed the point of being "WWE" for more years than it was called "WWF".

Christ I feel old.

TIL that I joined the UKFF two years before Je'Von Evans was born.

Hulk Hogan, Eddie Guerrero, Chris Benoit and Vader have all wrestled on WWE Raw more recently than Brock Lesnar.

That's a crazy stat!

Surely that's not true? Surely!

they did at least one bait and switch of announcing Brock for a match on RAW a couple of years ago, but he hasn't actually wrestled on RAW since 2002, when he beat Tommy Dreamer. Pretty much his entire first run beyond that was on Smackdown, and his squash match against Kofi in 2019 was Smackdown. Before that, he hadn't had a TV match at all since 2004.

Benoit's last RAW match was 2007, Eddie's 2005, Hogan's 2005, and Vader had a match with Heath Slater in 2012.

Seeing the figure of him in Smyths today reminded me that I realised that Koko B Ware wore those gawdy blue and yellow boots (including during his High Energy run) and the tights with one blue leg, one yellow leg and yellow trunks over them because they're the colour of a macaw.

Saw that figure too this weekend as whilst the missus peruses Dunelm, I always have a sneaky peek in Smyths to look at the wrestling figures (sad behaviour for a 46 year old man!). That Koko was a thing of beauty though - almost tempted to buy it except I have nowhere to put and it'll just end up in a cupboard. Ditto the WWE / Streetfighter mash-up figs they had. I really liked the display boxes they're in, but seriously wtf am I going to do with them? Why do they make these figures look so good these days?

Anyway dear old Koko - one thing that often gets overlooked is the amount of effort he put into his ring gear. Take a search for his photos, he had a Rick Rude size wardrobe of unique trunks and jackets (even going the full company man route of having 'WWF' on the back of his trunks at either Survivor Series 87 or 88). He really did switch them up. I often wonder if that's why he had some longevity in the company because he put the effort in visually.

Probably not news to most, but TIL Michael Cole was a journalist who covered the aftermath of the Oklahoma City bombing, Yugoslavian Civil war and most thrillingly the Waco siege.
