Today I Learned (Wrestling Edition)

TIL Evil Uno runs a Canadian indy called MYSTERY WRESTLING where the card, wrestlers and match types are a mystery. Oooo.

As someone who just can't muster the effort for work rate indies, this is my jam. It's completely silly bollocks, very mystery science theatre coded, Uno has a commentary partner each show like Nyla Rose, RJ City etc, someone with comedy chops. The match types are also a mystery so you get stuff like Falls Count SOMEWHERE, Campfire Rules, A literal death match, Inflatable Pool Street Fight. 

Wrestlers are a mix of Canadian indies are folks like Eddie Kingston, Ortiz, Speedball Bailey etc. Also people cosplaying or whatever. Each show is about 90mins-2h and they're a breeze. Utter fucking nonsense. Exactly what I want from the art form. So lacking in serious even Triple H would complain.

Mystery Wrestling is great fun. They did the latest edition of their "Infinite Rumble" charity telethon type thing the other day.

No spoilers but it went a gnat's under 22hrs.

Was just looking at the copy of the Summerslam '90 programme - it originally advertised a Rick Martel vs Tito Santana match. I never knew this was planned. It was a fued that seemed to go forever, but with no real pay-off. Personally I think they should have had the 1-on-1 match at Summerslam '89, hot off the Martel turn at WMV, instead of pairing them with the Rougeaus and The Rockers at that event. 

Also - I never realised that the dark match at Summerslam '90 was Buddy Rose vs Shane Douglas. It's been a day of learning!

Roddy Piper's daughter does that nonsense as well. Didn't Dana White come up with it to try and avoid all the stuff about his domestic abuse coming up whenever people searched "Dana White slap" on Google?

The mad thing was, I’m pretty sure the Power Slap thing was already in motion, not because of that incident but actually just before it. Then the meathead prick went and slapped his wife around and got caught on camera, actually forcing the debut show to be delayed. So it wasn’t initially created to bury the story but I do think Dana then going so hard with the hard sell (actually saying fucking Power Slap was doing bigger numbers than the NFL, NBA, NHL etc combined) was his attempt to make sure any search of “Dana White” and “slap” would see the top results being his goofy bold claims instead of his goofy bald head, on camera, slapping his wife around.

That was a heavy, hard KO there for Swagger, his body totally shut down, I wonder if you'll see him again in that outfit. We talk about career changing KO's in boxing & MMA, and I would say that there is certainly a career changing KO.

Steve Corino was there live in person and says that Playboy killed kayfabe for him when he backed Shane up to the ropes and said "I'll shoot you off, reverse, back body drop".

A lot of the feuds back then were done primarily for the house shows as the primary source of revenue. With only 4 PPVs, two of which were gimmick shows, and long stretches in between them, building to a PPV was less of a priority. And with 3 or 4 touring crews and the world champ only able to appear at one, you needed strong midcard feuds to draw for months. Martel and Tito had a match on SNME in late 89 and a few other tv matches but there were a lot of feuds like that.
