So I finally completed Act 1 of Clair Obscur and I'm still not quite getting this game. It's fine I guess? Perfectly playable but the story, characters and world has not sucked me in at all. I'm enjoying it enough that I'm going to crack on with it but I'm definitely a bit baffled by the extremely high praise it's getting.

How do you feel about turn-based RPGs in general? Is it a genre you’re a fan of? I loved the story, and the various clliffhangers absolutely floored me. I’m intrigued as to how you’ll feel about how it concludes - the final chapter is more divisive, I think, than where you’re at. You can probably guess which side of the divide I’m on based on the fact I’ve completed it multiple times and - as far as I’m aware - done everything there is to do.

25 hours into Donkey Kong Bananza and it is wonderful. I got it at Christmas, initially had a 30 minute dabble and was not grabbed. Had another go last weekend and ended up playing until my controller battery died.

I was exactly the same! I’m not sure the opening area reflects what the game becomes particularly well. By the time I finished it, I’d go as far as to say I enjoyed it more than Odyssey - a game I absolutely adored.

Not sure how much is left because, again, I have been militant about spoilers for this game, but even before it’s over I am feeling tempted by the score attack/roguelike DLC. This is partly because roguelikes/roguelikes are my Kryptonite, but also because I want an excuse to play more of it.

I bought it for the exact same reason. It’s not bad, but it’s very expensive for what you actually get. For that reason, I wouldn’t recommend it.

I haven't played many of them but very much enjoyed Child of Light and Persona 5 is one of my favourite games ever.

The combat is decent just nothing about anything else is jumping out at me.

Finished Final Fantasy X and my opinion of it as a game just fuckin' plummeted.

From the offset I'll say it's a great cast of characters, up there with the best of them. Aside from Wakka being a bit of a chump, there's not an unlikeable one among them, which for a Final Fantasy game is quite an achievement. It's all killer and no filler. No Cait Siths or Amarants or Yetis in sight.
The music, I can see why people rate it as their favourite as there's some real classics in there, but for me it doesn't hold up to VII. It's up there though. Zanarkand, Besaid, the Seymour fight, Yuna's theme, there's some all time greats there. A lot of it fits thematically but is very forgettable.

The battle system is hit and miss for me. It's fast and fluid and I like you can change characters on the fly. The biggest issues stem from the reason it's like that though. The game drops the standard "gain XP to get stronger" mechanic and now has a system where characters don't level up, skills are tied to weapons, and each weapon has a unique use, e.g Wakka's ball can hit flying enemies, piercing stat does damage against armored enemies, etc.
I find the whole thing boring to be honest. It encourages you to only use certain characters so people like Rikku and Kimahri don't see the light of day. The sphere grid levelling system is a waste of time, basically making you do all the work that is usually automated and it only really being useful towards the back hour or two of the main game.

The gameplay is linear. No open world, just small areas and corridors and when you get the airship late game you pick them from a list. The minigames are arguably the worst in the whole series. Chocobo challenges, monster capturing, lightning dodging, blitzball. All shit. The latter two are so awful you try them a couple of times and leave them alone for the rest of the game, but they lock two of the character's ultimate weapons behind them. Fair play to anyone who can do 200 lightning dodges, we managed 8 between three of us trying.

The balance is utterly fucked too. The game is insultingly easy, only made challenging by the rock/paper/scissors fight mechanics that artificially drag fights out. The endgame though is shocking. Near the end of the game the world fills with optional superbosses you would have no chance of beating unless you sank dozens of hours into grinding, and uses them to lock you out of parts of the game so you can't backtrack for things you missed. If you go into this game without a guide, you can essentially softlock yourself out of at least two ultimate weapons, and one character's final overdrive move.

So yeah. Fun characters, decent story, partially excellent battle system but counterbalanced by boring linear gameplay, an unfair endgame, and a rock/paper/scissors battle system combo'd with a dull levelling system that artificially drags the fights out to make them seem more interesting than they are. I think if you do what I've done in the past and play it in isolation you'll enjoy it more, but playing it right after 6, 7, and 9 it makes it very apparent this was the beginning of the new era of Final Fantasy and it's not a patch on the ones before it.

If you like classic Final Fantasy games, I can’t recommend Chained Echoes enough. It’s like a modern take on the formula - with old-school graphic, a genuinely unique turn-based system, a world map and a shot-tonne of sidequests. You have secret party members to unlock, a decent story and there’s even a Suikoden like mechanic where you recruit members for your base - entirely optional but very fun. Oh, and you can fly around in mechs a bit like Xenoblade Chronicles X. It’s one of the best JRPG-style games I’ve played in a long time, it’s absolutely outstanding yet has slipped under the radar for a lot of people. Genuinely a 10/10 game for me, it’s fantastic.

Sounds like what Bravely Default did so well, that game nailed everything so well including the best job system I've seen and so many quality of life additions including lots of control over random battles and even auto battling. Never played the sequels though as I heard they weren't near as good, might get around to them now I'm playing my 3DS again.

It’s better than Bravely Default - it’s one of the best combat systems I’ve ever seen in a game like this, the soundtrack is incredible and the story - while a bit weird at times (though I like a bit of weird) - has really gripped me.

I’m at the end portion right now, and before I beat that final boss I’m trying to wrap up every side quest, every base recruit, every unique monster and every hidden boss that I can, as well as getting the best weapon for each party member.

The game looks so beautiful too - if you’re a JRPG fan, I’d be amazed if you didn’t enjoy it:

Capcom still can’t write a good story.

I've got a text document of the whole story of Street Fighter that says they sometimes get it right.

Resident Evil always struck me as more a series of set pieces than an actual narrative though.

I'm completely the opposite. I'm so glad it wasn't dragged out. I get so put off by modern gaming and it thinking it needs to be massive and take a bazillion hours.

This felt far more manageable and tight to me so I was happy with that.

But I get why some might want more from it.
