Paid Members Jesse Posted January 18 Paid Members Posted January 18 Shaun Murphy just beat me three frames to none and I nearly put my hand through the screen, prick. At least I don't have to hear him talk I suppose. Quote
Moderators Chest Rockwell Posted January 18 Moderators Posted January 18 (edited) Picked up Unpacking for my daughter on Steam because she was playing some proper addicting brainrot ad filled free browser based garbage. She loves it, and her mood is noticeably different from playing this than that other shite. Wouldn't have heard of it if it wasn't for this place. Cheers lads. If she likes that, I found Is This Seat Taken? to be a game that scratches a similar itch. In short, it’s a game where you have to arrange where people sit, but they might have preferences - for example, someone might not want to sit next to a child, or someone listening to loud music etc. One or two of the levels are a bit challenging, but never overly so and I found it a very satisfying and relaxing game to play. Paid Members Jazzy G Posted January 20 Paid Members Posted January 20 There's a game in early access on Steam called Hozy which is described as the love child of Power Wash Simulator and Unpacking. Hopefully it finds its way to Switch. Quote

Paid Members FLips Posted January 30 Paid Members Posted January 30 We finished Final Fantasy VI: Pixel Remaster last week and I think it's cemented now as my favourite Final Fantasy. Coming from 7 and 9 to 6 is quite a trilogy and honestly it could be a coin toss between them all. The amount of depth in the world and characters for a SNES game is astounding, and the remastered music is perfectly done by adding just a little more quality to the same tracks rather than change them into anything else. It's all killer, very little filler. There's a vast roster of 14 characters and you have to use at least 12 of them to finish the game, so they all have unique abilities and stories. I think games like this are why I was never blown away by Octopath Traveler, which somehow managed to promote this very mechanic as unique but also remove all of the uniqueness from the characters by reducing them to jobs. Around 60 hours in by the time the credits rolled (and they're wonderful) I was overcome a little with emotion like I am any time I finish a big game that I really loved. Highly recommended. At the opposite end of the spectrum so far though, we've moved onto Final Fantasy X which since the PS2 release I've called one of my favourites. Honestly though, going from 6, 7 and 9 to this really exposes just how much it lost it's way. Really bad voice acting, dogshit Blitzball minigame, linear corridor environments and a levelling and equipment system that while unique offers absolutely no room for customisation or experimenting (unless you do the expert grid which you're recommended not to). The music is five stars, the characters are mostly all really good too, but the world and the gameplay is such a big leap backwards and in hindsight now you can see how it was the stepping stone away from classic Final Fantasy into the new era which for me, since XII hasn't produced a great Final Fantasy. I'm not saying I hate it, but I'm only a few hours in and I'm so underwhelmed by a game I really enjoyed on the PS2 and PS4 re-release. Time hasn't been kind to it, and playing it fourth in a list of all time greats has really shown it up. Quote
Merzbow Posted February 2 Posted February 2 (edited) Again? Isn't this like the 3rd time GAME has entered adnimistration? They've been closing non-standalone stores too, the House of Frazer one in Brum was actually pretty decent even if it was used to sell off old stock from other shops. You'd get things dirt cheap. Bring back Electronics Boutique, I need more Amiga games from the bargain bin. Edited February 2 by Merzbow Quote

I loved it at the time, but playing it recently, I realised that Zidane is a horrible lead. He’s an absolute creep to female character, and even goes as far as sexually assaulting Dagger early on (he grabs her arse while climbing a ladder). I fucking hated him. X is cheesy, but I liked it more on replay, although I can’t argue against any of your criticisms. The story is rubbish, but I kind of liked it. In terms of quality later Final Fantasies, XIII-2 is a lot of fun, and XV is very enjoyable too. Neither match the highs of the earlier games from a story perspective, but I’d hold their villains up against any other in the series. Caius and Ardyn are both better than the games they’re in - though I like both games a lot. XVI is one of my favourite Final Fantasies ever, even if it does veer significantly from the formula of the previous games. The story is one of the best in the series, and the combat is so much fun. I found myself seeking out fights just because I loved the battle system. Having said that, I hope XVII is a return to the classic formula, with the story living up to the standards set by XVI. Clair Obscur, Xenoblade and Dragon Quest XI show that kind of game can still work incredibly well. Quote
The Gaffer Posted February 3 Posted February 3 There's just something about the world building and overall aesthetic with Final Fantasy X where I don't think I could ever have truly loved it. It's a religious pilgrimage road trip movie where corny humour only occasionally offsets a near constant po-faced seriousness as you move from one boring place to another filled with the thickest people on the planet. That's a sort of weird, heavy criticism to level at bystanders in a JRPG but Final Fantasy X is full of them. It's like the whole Sin's toxin making you stupid thing was a legitimate mass event that turned all of Spira into bonehead central. The more obvious linearity in the field I didn't mind, but in the Sphere Grid it stood out way more. Granted you can veer off in different directions and make mistakes with it, but essentially you're just opening it up and clicking into the next sphere to unlock every couple of battles. It feels less like a system and more like pressing a big shiny "You done well, level up!" button. It also has one of the worst few opening hours to a major title ever. Admittedly, a lot of that is for very legitimate stranger-in-strange-land storytelling reasons but the whole thing feels so disjointed and alienating as you move from one environment to another being made to feel stupid. It does get better as it goes along. On the subject of IX, I think I've repressed Zidane's dodgy bits. He's not a great lead but I consider that game an ensemble cast where his main role pretty much is drawing them into the party and encouraging them to be themselves and hit the road with the rest of the gang. He functions fine from that standpoint, and of any Final Fantasy it seems to put its foot in it the least and become more charming and consistent as time's gone on to me. I must give XIII-2 a whirl. I've heard a lot now that it's a good'un. Quote
The King Of Swing Posted February 3 Posted February 3 FXX-2 is a blast. Basically FF Charlie's Angels. Quote

I had a great time with it. It’s daft, but kind of embraces its daftness and it recognises that gaming should be fun - my only complaints about it really is that I’d have quite liked some more of it, and there probably could be a bit more variety as far as the landscapes are concerned. Having discovered a winning formula, I don’t know whether to applaud the fact they took the risk of scrapping it all and doing something completely different for XIII-3, or whether I should be asking them what the fuck they were thinking with that. Maybe it’s a bit both - Lightning Returns is even more bizarre and batshit crazy, and kind of ignores the cliffhanger set up at the end of XIII-2, or at least, doesn’t follow it up in a way I found satisfying. I still kind of liked it, but it’s a game that you have to complete within a certain timescale, and that kills the fun of it a little. 4 hours ago, The King Of Swing said: FXX-2 is a blast. It’s even more stupid than its predecessor, but I’d argue that in many ways it’s more fun than the game that came before it. Quote
The King Of Swing Posted February 3 Posted February 3 I've always been a fan of FFX-2, despite never really liking the previous game. Lightning Returns and to a lesser extent XIII-2, felt to me like SE stopped giving a shit and just let the devs go crazy. Quote
