Paid Members Carbomb Posted October 3, 2022 Paid Members Posted October 3, 2022 The more I hear it, especially in conjunction with this economic shambles, the more the name "Kwasi Kwarteng" sounds like a crypto-currency. Quote
Members SuperBacon Posted October 3, 2022 Members Posted October 3, 2022 Just seen someone refer to Kwarteng as Lord Kwas and if I've seen it, then you have to too. And by you, I mean @Chest Rockwell:) Quote

Paid Members BomberPat Posted October 5, 2022 Paid Members Posted October 5, 2022 it's obviously just Tories saying the sort of thing their base will lap up, but is no one pointing out to her that unemployment is at its lowest since the early '70s, yet in-work poverty and food bank usage is spiralling out of control, so maybe the problem isn't "people don't want to work"? Add to this that 40% of people on UC receive it whilst working. It's just a further way of driving division when they talk about UC and "those that don't want to work" The only thing that worries me about the next election is that people just forget this all. Im rereading Soccernomics (bear with me) and they talk about something called the 'availability heuristic' : the more available a piece of information is to the memory, the more likely it is to influence your decision, even when the information is irrelevant. So Labour could bring this entire shitstorm up, and the Tories could go "Yeah but Keith bums dogs and is a commie" and people will just follow that again with no critical thinking. Its maddening. I work full time, on a relatively decent wage, Mrs James only works 2 days a week as we cannot afford to put our little one in nursery any longer than 1 day a week (£60 a day), we get a top up from Universal Credit as without it, we wouldn't survive the month as we barely scrape by as it is. I would imagine this is the case for a large amount of families throughout the country and it still seems fairly taboo to 'admit' that you claim Universal Credit as its viewed as scrounging, which is kind of where the Tories are aiming their claims. Get the voters rallied up against the lazy scroungers who take their tax money. When the lazy scroungers are those in power, taking our tax money while the rest of us work our fingers to the bone to make ends meet. Quote

I'm not in poverty but while working I needed the UC to put my child in childcare and I know alot of others who were or are in the same boat, if we didn't get that then either I quit work and do it myself or all my salary went on childcare. Either way the household income would have been significantly lower. And anybody who says only have kids if you know you can afford it, well we'd be even more fucked with aging population and the working class not having kids to look after them. I've also been unemployed, not because I don't want to work but contracts got ended and I needed a safety net. Even if there are people who abuse the benefits system, I'm sure some do exist, I believe most need it. Quote

It is such a small % of people, and even then those that "don't want to work" exist because of 'inherited unemployment' from their parents, family etc, so there are massive root causes to it, that just aren't tackled in the right way. It's so complicated. Quote
Paid Members BomberPat Posted October 5, 2022 Paid Members Posted October 5, 2022 Also, based on my experience of unemployment and claiming benefits, anyone willingly putting through that system and somehow managing to come away from it with decent money, is probably putting in more of a shift than I have in most of my jobs, and they're welcome to it. To be fair they've changed their narrative to "people don't want to work long enough" and "people should get better jobs." Edited October 5, 2022 by Vamp Quote
