It does seem a thing Salford way.  Went for a chippy dinner when waiting for a scan at Salford Royal a couple of years ago and a lad in there got chips, fried rice and gravy that looked just like that.  Plenty of dark soy in It by the looks of things.  Terrified me so I stuck to a chip barm.

We had one from Oh My Cod in Leigh-on-Sea this evening. Fresh cooked chips, very crispy batter, HUGE portion size. Medium rock, medium chips, large tub of mushy peas, large tub of curry sauce, tub of tartare sauce - £15. Will definitely go back again 

 

Took them down to the seafront at Westcliff and sat and watched the tide coming in with a beautiful summers evening as a backdrop. Perfect!

As you're in that neck of the woods, Oldhams of Westcliff is the best. Opposite the Palace Theatre. I used to live down the road from it and it was always perfect.

I went to one of my old locals for the first time in around 3/4 years on Friday. It got sold to new owners around 2 years back and I've been told it's dropped off a cliff quality-wise, but I thought how bad could it be? Opted for 2 pieces of chicken, chips and a scollop/battered potato slice/batch/whatever you call it. 

It was vile, I had about half of it then threw the rest away, and I've just spent the past two days shitting and throwing up with food poisoning. So probably one to avoid in future!

Wights in Ryde on the Isle of Wight. Went for the half option of cod as we were having lunch and had a full afternoon planned, plus it was a sit down chippy tea, but it was as always excellent.

Last chance to go see mother and partner before my birthday yesterday, so as always visited their finest local chippy that also sells kebabs, Kings.
Look at those beautiful elephant legs.

Mrs raid fancied donner without chicken so we had a tray with mild chilli and garlic mayo (I added some of mama raids mint sauce to mine) and we split a bag of mixed chips.

Not pictured, mama raid and common-law raid in law had same chips and mixed chicken and chicken tikka. Portions seem to have shrank but still won’t grumble at £19.80 to feed 4 though I did eat more than my share and still had room for cake. Never had to flush 4 times before!

Next weekend we go away for a week in Devon then a week in Cornwall where we will swap elephant for haddock and I might get some curry sauce too. Though I think I might spare you the toilet editorial.

Marlboro was top notch! Had battered sea bass and some battered mushrooms on the side. Absolutely bang on. Great crunch on the batter too. 

Lovely to see different fish on the menu too such as sea bass and mackerel rather than the usual range that you'd find in any chippy up and down the country

So weekend gone, Mrs raid and I got back from two weeks in the South West. Here’s brief highlights of our trip.

 

We started off in Brixham and by Tuesday we were overdue a fish so the wife permitted me to choose local favourite Davids instead of reliable regular Rockfish, I’d just read in a red top article they’d been one of the winners in this years Fry awards although it’s fair to say, there’s so many chippy award lists it’s tough to know the Grammys from the Slammys. They offered homemade curry sauce too which was a must-buy. Wife agreed everything was spot on which surprised me as the haddock was the flakier and sweeter type that I love where she prefers fishier and juicier. Batter was stunning, light and crisp. Chips were crisp outside soft inside, curry was sweet, fruity and spicy.

Haddock, chips and curry, £17.55 which I didn’t have the heart to tell Mrs raid included 10p for saying yes to “do you need a carrier bag” without thinking it would be charged… and we didn’t receive in the end anyway because I asked if we could eat in the deck chairs out front, so I didn’t need one. Still, just the job.

By Thursday we wanted another so went to Rockfish. Haddock and chips is the “seasonal special” which doesn’t say much, hake would have been £1 more and they’ve stopped doing cod altogether. Fish was good albeit that fishier and oilier way the Mrs prefers, batter was great with more “crunch” than “crisp,” chips were tasty and JUST the right fatness for me not to accuse them of being fries as they’ve fallen foul of past. Mrs raid thought both fish and chips were better than Davids, I felt the opposite. Grounds for divorce in anyone’s book.

Haddock and chips, £12. She enjoyed it so much we went back on the Friday and had it again. I took another photo but it would be pointless to share it, really. A tub of Kinder Bueno ice cream (special offer from Tesco) scoffed with the travel spoons we always carry just in case followed nicely overlooking the marina.

The week after we were in Cornwall. Monday meant St Ives, which meant By The Sea. Mrs raid fancied some scampi so we took that too. Fish again tasty, good batter, while the scampi tasted nice and the outside of the crumb was crisp there was probably too much as inside it was a little mushy. Though we got 9 pieces instead of the advertised 8. Chips were fantastically crispy although again possibly too skinny for my liking.

Finally on our final night in Hayle we had to get a Sanders. Fish was sweet, flaky and with a delightful batter with random crispy bits everywhere… “skraggy” is the word (?) I found to describe it. Superb chips too, with a splash of vinegar I’d brought from home in case of “at home” dining on plates, enjoyed watching sunset from the decking with a bottle of Badger Golden Glory.

Splendid trip all round. Also dolphins, steam trains and I could probably do a similar post about pasties from various establishments.

Although memo to Liverpool fans - you ARE allowed to leave the house wearing something other than the shirt. Fair enough I saw plenty of other fans but those bastards were everywhere. Got to first park at 8, saw my first red by 9:30. Blustery day at Marazion, only one football shirt spotted. Disconcerting number of parents raising full kit wankers. I swear, if the rest of us got together, we could stop them!

Well this is how I found out the chippy at the station nearest to my old gaff in Warrington closed. Good plaice was that chippy.

We went to a cracking place today called Bigger Fish To Fry. Really reasonable prices, they do John Bulls, and huge portions. Vicky and I split a large chips between us. They also do something called a Croft Dab as well, which I think is two dabs (scollops, potato fritters or whatever your regional parlance is) or two slices of potato sandwiching a slice of cheese and then battered. We're definitely going there again. 

My mate Ant is having to fly back from Colombia because of some nonsense with his visa. He'll be gagging for a chippy tea, so that may end up being Saturday otea. My late mum would approve on the anniversary of her passing.

There is also Bigger Fish To Fry 2 up Mill Hill owned by the same folk, went there a couple of weeks ago and was decent. Mentioned before but the John Bulls is superb, and they do it well.

I wouldn't be surprised if that was the one we'd gone to. Nowhere near where I am up Roe Lee. Properly good prices. Chips were pretty much done to order. Could even have had scraps if I'd asked. 

Went for a curry at Spice Garden after D&D last night with the rest of the party, and mentioned how good Zen Zen can be. Not a proper chippy, but the chippy stuff they do is good. They also do some interesting things like salt & pepper donner, donner fried rice and, my personal choice, donner chow mein. Curry sauce is decent as well. Definitely better to order ahead and pick up instead of ordering delivery though as a few times my mum and I would end up waiting 2 hours because of how popular they are.
