I think Control is good, as is 24 Hour Party People, although you could argue the latter isn't really a biopic.

A Complete Unknown with Chalamet was very decent, as was Priscilla, but again not really about Elvis.

I've never heard of Control tbh, but A Complete Unknown looked from the trailer like it would be everything I hate about the genre.

There's currently a West End show about him running and before that Thriller ran for years. Whether or not people believe he was a nonce (he was) there seems to be an ability to compartmentalise it. The power of banging tunes I suppose.

In fairness, the original Michael Jackson biopic, starting Flex Alexander is one if the most unintentionally funny films ever made so they have big shoes to fill.

 

Also, Moonwalker exists, and arguably gives a greater insight into that man's psyche than any bipoic could ever.

I'd definitely count 24 Hour Party People although it's more about a scene than an actual person, even though Tony Wilson is central to it. Easily the best music biopic I've ever seen but yeah, they're usually shit.

Actually, Better Man and Rocketman were far better than they had any right to be. And probably because they were not straight up life story bullshit. Outside of that most are at best, fine to at worst dogshit.

Yeah I enjoyed it. Most of the shit it got seemed to be from people involved with the scene who were fucked off it didn't portray them all as brooding menaces but as the mostly thick, edgelord teenagers they were.

Plus it gave us Sky Ferreira in a feature film that's actually not shite, I like how so many metallers were complaining that the director had no idea about metal yet he was actually a member of Bathory in the early 80's before the first album.

IIRC this was the only recorded song he played drums for them on.

This is a very A24-style movie, but it looks pretty cool and the origin of the movie is strange one too.

Someone posted a photo of an empty, yellow room on 4chan in a thread about liminal spaces which kicked off a bunch of "creepypasta" fictional stories from various users all about the room.

A kid called Kane Pixels made a 9-minute "found footage" movie (completely made using Blender and Adobe After Effects) based on it and uploaded it to YouTube where it's racked up 75m views. He made a whole series of them - all only a few minutes long each - but off the back of the original one A24 bought the rights to the movie adaptation and hired him to direct it. He's only 19 years old!

Obviously wackiness is now a selling point in films so maybe this ends up being more like a standard studio film wearing the costume of a fun silly romp (I'm looking at you boy kills world) rather than the glorious nonsense it's selling itself as

I just really rather hope Andrew Koji isn't offed to give Noah Centino motivation to become the hero. Koji is really quite talented (Warrior is a great little show if you've not watched) and deserves a big break
