Paid Members Sergio Mendacious Posted September 10, 2016 Paid Members Share Posted September 10, 2016 Norman moved to the USA when he was really young, does he really count in this discussion? It's like claiming Bob Hope as an Englishman.

King Pitcos
Or Kane from Spain? I wonder if they'd ever have him as Spanish if they ever did a WWE World Cup type thing. Have they ever referenced it on telly? I know they used to love mentioning it on the website and magazines.
Paid Members Teedy Kay Posted September 11, 2016 Paid Members Share Posted September 11, 2016 Kane's different as he was born on American soil in a different country. Being a child of parents in the Forces is a whole different ball game. Â Spike Milligan is British for example.

Paid Members Linus Posted September 11, 2016 Paid Members Share Posted September 11, 2016 As requested, here's a brief expansion of my point on "British" success: Â Nationalities are artificial constructs. There is nothing that particularly links me to any other British person (excluding family, which I'll get to later), other than a vaguely shared socialisation. The shared values that we hold as "British" include as many negatives as positives, and are constantly changing/evolving. Thus, all I have in common with "great British heroes" like Nelson is that we were born on the same scrap of land. Â Therefore, any kind of "pride" felt at purely being the same nationality as someone else is stupid, and used to divide. Any kind of "pride" at anything you didn't have a hand in is also stupid, so when I hear people say they were proud of their family because their grandfather yatta yatta yatta I roll my eyes. You weren't there, you didn't do shit. Â What I am in favour of is localism, and you can definitely feel involved and connected to and influence those smaller communities (and I'd include the British wrestling "family" as one of those). Taking Paige as an example, those who went to shows that featured Brittani Knight and saw her early steps can feel some connection to her later success. It's still a bit stupid but it's as understandable as supporting your local football team or your national team in a World Cup. It's also a two-sided coin, in that someone like Finn Balor, who very much started on the UK & Ireland indies, had to put 2 years in at the performance centre before he was deemed ready for the WWE main roster. Is he still a UK & Ireland success story? It blurs at that point. Layla, as a professional wrestler, has nothing to do with British wrestling. Â It's very much my own thing, and while I'd destroy jingoism & nationalism if I could, I accept that I'm just an old man and you can do what you like. WyattSheepMask
Del Rio held a press conference Friday afternoon at a Hooters in Mexico City: - Paige was in attendance, however she did not sit down at the table. Â - Del Rio admitted that he didn't feel comfortable in WWE and was considering leaving several months back. He says he felt he had done everything there was to do in WWE and was losing his passion for wrestling. Â - Del Rio says his release was mutually-agreed upon and all parties left on good terms. Â - Del Rio says that he will not be subjected to the standard 90-day no compete policy, and is already taking bookings throughout Mexico, America, and Europe. Â - Del Rio says he's currently in negotiations with AAA, CMLL, and Elite, but doesn't want to be exclusive anywhere. In a point of confusion, he later said that Elite hasn't contacted him. He only wants to work 60 matches a year. Â - Del Rio says he wants to retire in two years and is already in talks to work in management for a Mixed Martial Arts company. He's also in talks to become a regular commentary for another MMA promotion. Â - Del Rio stresses that he would like to return to Arena Mexico. Â - Del Rio will once again be wrestling under the name "Alberto El Patron," as indicated by a banner hanging behind his table. Â - Del Rio did not discuss his wellness policy violation, nor that of Paige.
Paid Members tiger_rick Posted September 11, 2016 Paid Members Share Posted September 11, 2016 Interesting debate. Don't know if this is the right thread. I respect your right to hold that opinion but unfortunately your stupid reference to "jingoism" belittles your argument. National prid isn't the same as being a little Englander who thinks anyone who lives outside their postcode is a foreigner, sticks a St. George flag up in their window and refuses to eat Argentinian beef. Â Nor is a country just some scrap of land we were born in. It is where we were born and grew up, of course, but it's also the place most of us will spend 99% of our lives, the place we contribute to financially and democratically. We should care about it and be proud of it because that's what drives growth and improvement. I'll never tolerate any racism whatsoever but it's not anywhere near the same thing. Â Being proud and supportive of people from this country is natural. It could have been any of us. People often from similar backgrounds with similar upbringing. Maybe people who grew up in your area or went to your school or club. Perhaps just people who've achieved your ambition. Like supporting your local football team or the England team. I love being a fan but it stems from being a little kid and wanting to play for Hull City and England more than anything else in the world. I support people who are living out my dreams. Always some people who take that to stupid levels but that's human nature. Â People have fought over fuck all for thousands of years. You'll never take away that element.
