That closing segment of Raw was hard to watch. I was choked throughout and holding back tears by the end. What I love most about the D-Bry story is that it was just him. It was tinged in reality, it was built on genuine feeling for the guy and genuine support. So when he stands there and has to call it a day, it's real too.

I'm not going to claim to be his biggest fan. I've never disliked him but I'm not someone who was ever campaigning for him. I just always thought he was really good. I've followed him since I first read about him in TWA and without ever seeing him wrestle, Bryan Danielson was always part of my fantasy wrestling drafts and TNM/EWR games. I first saw him in ROH, I think, and I liked him in a way I liked Eddie G and Chris Benoit when I first saw them. Delighted he finally made it to the big time and even more delighted that he broke the mould when he got there.

I'm honest enough to say I never thought he could be "the" guy. Not even temporarily. He was too small, he was too bland and he didn't have the look. But he managed to transmit onto TV that he's one of the most likable people in the business and people just adored him. And how couldn't they? His rise to the title at WM30 genuinely feels at the moment like it will be the last great WWE angle. He delivered big time in a way I can honestly say I never saw coming in a billion years. But I'm bloody glad it did.

One of my least favourite things of the past couple of years is that it's been made them and us by a certain set of fans. I like Roman Reigns a lot. I like Daniel Bryan a lot. I've hated that in order to "defend" Roman, you had to put down D-Bry. My favourite match of 2015 was the Rigns/Bryan match at Fast Lane. The best match Reigns has ever had and probably D-Bry's last truly great performance.

So, yeah, thank you Daniel Bryan. I've enjoyed his work a fucking load. But I enjoyed seeing him standing on Raw, young, healthy and with his wife and his life in front of him. Not many wrestlers are that lucky. D-Bry deserves to be.

Didn't really watch him much in the WWE (lost interest years ago), but I'll always remember him at the start of Ring of Honor in 2002. Some of the matches he was involved in were astounding.

That's a shame Baz. As good as his early RoH stuff was, his later WWE work was incredible. If you become a bit interested in watching some, definitely watch a load of his stuff from late 2011 or so onwards. World heavyweight title reign, Team Hell No and then his pursuit of the WWE title/Authority feud.

I've just finished watching the last 20 mins of Raw. A few tears were shed when he mentioned his Dad.

I've always been a fan of his work but what made me root for him over the year's was the fact he just comes across so down to earth and like able.

I can't imagine anyone ever having a bad word to say against him and in a business like pro wrestling that says it all.

So gutted. He was starting to get over real big when I started watching again in 2012. He was my favourite guy soon after, and probably will be for a long time. I know it's for the best, but man, there was always that iota of hope that he might come back and Raw might be worth watching again.

Really sad news but It's great to see him, and WWE, put his health first. I'm a massive fan of his despite never seeing anything except one or two matches before his WWE run. During his journey to the WM30 match I felt an emotional connection to him that I haven't had since Austin was stunning everybody on the late 90s.

Think it was Ian who said he's the most real person in WWE and that's spot on. Hopefully he's not remembered as the last time WWE had such a talent on their roster.

All the talk of him going to the indies seems dead to me, now. The fact that he referenced in his speech how he fought it and wanted it not to be true, and how the latest tests seem to have been a penny drop moment, says to me that he's actually done.

I hope he stays within the WWE family and doesn't become some Mick Foley type figure. Edges is definitely the retirement model you want.

It's bonkers to me that Bryan is retiring in tears on TV, and Punk is employed to get punched in the head. I imagine if they scanned his bonce it wouldn't be too pretty either.

Sad times, but definitely the right call if his brain is that bad.

Honestly put him up there with some of the best, especially when it comes to a proper hot tag/babyface comeback. A loss, but definitely for the best.

Still, at least he has Total Divas to fall back on. :sly:

So saddened by this news but at the end of the day it is for the best. He achieved so much in such a short space of time and proved everyone wrong. I genuinely think he is a big part of the reason why NXT is so good at the moment and why lads like Sami Zayn, Cesaro, Owens, Balor etc were signed. He made 95% of everything he was given to do work which what set him apart from everyone else. Tag team with Kane is so generic it should have been shit but it was brilliant, joining the Wyatt family was so stupid at the time but ended up producing one of the best moments of the last 5/6 years and a great match at the Rumble. He managed to lose a world title in 18 seconds into somehow getting MORE OVER which logic suggests is not possible.

I also hope he stays part of the WWE and finds something else to do. He is naturally very funny too. That table for three episode with the Ryback/Lesnar/Cialis story had me in stitches. Would love to see him have a go at commentary, I think he could be great at it and a WWE Network Stone Cold podcast appearance would be great to watch as well.

It was a tremendous run he had when you look back at it, culminating with his WrestleMania moment at 30. Who knows what he could've achieved if fully healthy. Always thought him and Punk we're going to be the next Bret and Shawn.

His concussion issues do sound pretty severe though. Have to wonder what effect concussions have had on so many other former superstars.
