Paid Members Carbomb Posted April 5, 2019 Paid Members Share Posted April 5, 2019 Wasn't sure whether or not to put this in the Daisy-Pushing thread, but it's about movies, so here you go. Scott Walker, of whom many on here have sung great praise, curated the Meltdown film festival at the South Bank Centre in London, and here's the list of what he selected: https://www.bfi.org.uk/news-opinion/news-bfi/features/scott-walker-s-favourite-films?utm_content=bufferb8de7&utm_medium=social&utm_source=facebookbfi&utm_campaign=buffer&fbclid=IwAR0Ot7lnSvwc-Z9zZG7Wj8lN55n6GilDiPYOdGDh1CqRNJeypR39IoJxnkg
Paid Members Devon Malcolm Posted April 5, 2019 Author Paid Members Share Posted April 5, 2019 The Sisters Brothers is a quality, old style western. John C. Reilly is on a great streak even by his standards. Really enjoyed this but not recommended if you don't fancy an oater.
Paid Members ColinBollocks Posted April 5, 2019 Paid Members Share Posted April 5, 2019 In Scott Walker film discussion, definitely check out Childhood of a Leader. The film itself is very good but Walker's score adds a lot to certain scenes. In particular, the opening and the finish.
Paid Members Devon Malcolm Posted April 5, 2019 Author Paid Members Share Posted April 5, 2019 Unicorn Store was far funnier and much better than I was expecting. I really hope Brie Larson directs more films and isn't put off by crying men giving it 0/10 on IMDb. She does a really good job with this and definitely doesn't make a tit of herself. Paid Members Devon Malcolm Posted April 6, 2019 Author Paid Members Share Posted April 6, 2019 I seem to remember someone on here absolutely detesting Fish Tank (was it you, @Astro Hollywood?) and I'm inclined to agree with them. No different from the million other films about council estates where everyone is fucking horrible. Fucking shit.

No different from the million other films about council estates where everyone is fucking horrible. Fucking shit. Yeah, I loathed it. Lottery Council funded tragedy-porn disguising itself as Cinema Verite. “Ooh, aren't towerblocks awful? The lifts have weewee in and everything! What a powerful comment on modern Britain!” You just know it was shot in 4:3 so the director would wank on in screening Q&As about how the audience feels boxed in, JUST LIKE THE CHARACTERS IN THEIR POVERTY! LIKE A FISH IN A TANK! And it had that biggest cliche of all, casting a 'real person' in the lead, because it's pretty much a documentary anyway, isn't it? Risible trash; a toilet-bad exploitation film masquerading as social commentary.
Paid Members ColinBollocks Posted April 6, 2019 Paid Members Share Posted April 6, 2019 Unicorn Store is indeed pretty good. With a lesser star, Larson's character could have easily come across as irritating, but Larson is a charming screen presence and makes the jokes work - also once again highlighted how awful most of the jokes are in Captain Marvel. Steve. Sicario 2 starts out with some promise but dies a horrid death half way in. I've only bothered with it now because it was never going to be as good as the 1st one, but they did a good job killing the franchise. I mean, the 1st had one of the most gripping endings I've ever witnessed in a cinema, where as this just felt like they couldn't be arsed doing work on the ending of the script. A bit of a mess. Hopefully they just end it there, unless King Denis wants it again.
Paid Members Devon Malcolm Posted April 7, 2019 Author Paid Members Share Posted April 7, 2019 I preferred Rampage, I think we saw that one twice. Going back to Fish Tank, what makes it even worse is that Andrea Arnold made Red Road, which I thought was brilliant. Then again, American Honey was awful too so maybe it was a fluke or I was drugged.
Paid Members gmoney Posted April 8, 2019 Paid Members Share Posted April 8, 2019 (edited) My girlfriend has got some deal with her health insurance where the more steps she does the more free shit she gets. She keeps getting free cinema tickets which she doesn't have time or inclination to use, so I have been able to leech these free tickets off of her and go myself. I'm going to see Missing Link on Thursday for fuck all, only the efforts of my missus. That's living. Edited April 8, 2019 by gmoney

Keith Houchen
Is Missing Link the one that was listed with no Director or am I confusing it with something else?
Paid Members gmoney Posted April 8, 2019 Paid Members Share Posted April 8, 2019 (edited) It's a stop-motion animation thing with Zoe Saldana and Zach Galafianakis. I only found out it existed today when desperately searching for something that was on Thursday afternoon at my local Vue that didn't look shit, so I am afraid I can't help with the director thing. Edited April 8, 2019 by gmoney

Yeah, Chris Butler has directed this. He wrote & directed this and  ParaNorman and wrote the screenplay for Kubo & The Two Strings. Wonderland has no director listed, which presumably means it’s shite and whoever has directed it doesn’t want it on their CV
