Paid Members chokeout Posted July 27, 2017 Paid Members Share Posted July 27, 2017 Just re-watched In The Heat Of The Night. Rod Steiger is just a different level of greatness, isn't he.
Paid Members Devon Malcolm Posted July 27, 2017 Author Paid Members Share Posted July 27, 2017 I watched one with him in called The Harder They Fall recently and he's amazing in that too. Probably the most underrated truly great actor of his generation.
Paid Members chokeout Posted July 27, 2017 Paid Members Share Posted July 27, 2017 I'll have to check that out. He seems to have this habit of making great actors better. The back and forth with Poitier in In The Heat Of The Night and Brando in On The Waterfront just elevate everyone. The Taxicab scene in OTWF has been dissected a million times but it really is two all time greats showing just how good they are, shifting through emotions with ease by its always Brando that gets the plaudits. It's even more incredible when its been confirmed that Brando, being his usual self, refused to stay for the close ups and Steiger was acting the scene without him.

Keith Houchen
Blair Witch. I loved the first one so much, this one not so much. Had it not have the Blair Witch backstory and setting etc, it would have been a generic found footage film.  Disappointing, and that's from someone who didn't mind Book Of Shadows.
Paid Members Devon Malcolm Posted July 28, 2017 Author Paid Members Share Posted July 28, 2017 Hounds Of Love - dull kidnap torture porn thing, complete waste of time. The Wall - Jaaaaaaaahn Cena and friend versus an Iraqi sniper. Pretty decent thriller, bit dull in the middle but with a clever ending.
Paid Members ColinBollocks Posted July 28, 2017 Paid Members Share Posted July 28, 2017 The Beguiled is really good. With the exception of Kidman's ropey southern drawl, everyone in it is good value. Colin Farrell, in particular, is brilliant casting.
Paid Members Scott Malbranque Posted July 28, 2017 Paid Members Share Posted July 28, 2017 Wanted to see The Wall but my mate ruined the ending for me (we do this to each other). Said the sniper wins in the end and shoots down the rescue helicopter . Is that it?
Paid Members Devon Malcolm Posted July 28, 2017 Author Paid Members Share Posted July 28, 2017 It's basically what happens but the build-up to how it happens is a bit cleverer than that. It's quite an ambiguous final shot as well, I thought it was quite well done.

Given some of the great reviews the film has been getting I expected something much better. It isn't awful or anything, but it just lacks any thrills, tension, suspense, anything disturbing or unsettling, and fails to leave a lasting impression or anything to discuss about it after it has finished. I thought the acting was fine (the performances are not as amazing as they are being made out as being though) and the story was fine (really simple and straightforward though), but is really is a pretty average kidnap thriller that has nothing that really makes it stand out. Paid Members Scott Malbranque Posted July 28, 2017 Paid Members Share Posted July 28, 2017 (edited) Thanks D-Mal. I'll give it a watch so. Fuckin swine ruining the ending on me. This all started with the Sixth Sense when I waltzed into work and gleefully blurted it out. So, more fool me and it's all my own doing. So Hounds of Love is a no-no, then? I actually wanted to see that. Â Edited July 28, 2017 by Scott Malbranque
Paid Members Devon Malcolm Posted July 28, 2017 Author Paid Members Share Posted July 28, 2017 Like @DJMsays, it's pretty run-of-the-mill stuff. The critics always seem to cack themselves at this sort of film but that's nowt to recommend it for besides Emma Booth, who is excellent in it. I wouldn't bother with it. I wish I'd gone to see The Big Sick instead.
Rey_Piste
If no one gets their shoes taken off and thrown in a lake, then they're really missing a trick with that film.
