Minor news items that don't deserve a thread

Nice little interview here from Paige on MTV. Great to see her getting some mainstream attention. I can't believe 2014 won't be the year she get's called up to the big time. If Punk really is gone you have to ask how long AJ will last - they've done pretty much everything they can with her character so Paige would make the perfect new 'Anti-Diva' It's awesome to see a UK talent getting so far:

Miz is back for the Marine 4, apparently. Absolutely crackers, I just don't get it.

His first one did really well, he probably charges less than Cena, and who else have they got to be in it?

Charges?

Something I'd not thought about, but my underlying assumption was these guys made the films as part of their contract and did not receive a separate fee (except for a discretionery bung).

Spotted this on one of the Facebook pages & thought it might be worth a share. Apologies if this is old news or been posted before:

JOEY RYAN REVEALS EMAIL SENT TO WWE TALENT EXECS AND BILL DEMOTT SAID AT TRYOUTS

It was reported last fall that indie veteran Joey Ryan participated in a WWE tryout camp at the Performance Center, just a few months after he was released from TNA. Ryan was not offered a contract and later said in an interview that WWE felt like he was too old and experienced to be in developmental.

A few weeks back in January, Ryan tweeted the following comments and made references to NXT trainer Bill DeMott and John Laurinaitis:

"At WWE camp, Bill DeMott said nobody on indies is as good as NXT guys. I'd LOVE to debate Bill DeMott on what he thinks 'good wrestling' is."

"Another thing Bill DeMott said at the WWE camp is that 'WWE retrained Daniel Bryan or he wouldn't be as good as he is today.'"

"Trying to get WWE job in 2010, John Laurinaitis told me 'I have enough 5'9" guys. I can't make money with Daniel Bryan, how can I with you?'"

"Candice Michelle went to PWG in 2008 & raved about me to John Laurinaitis. When I saw him, he said 'What does a Diva know about wrestling?'"

"'Don't wrestle the way John Cena does. Wrestle the way that I teach you.' - Bill DeMott at WWE camp."

Ryan also posted a screenshot of his e-mail reply to WWE's Senior Director of Talent Development, presumably former beach volleyball player Canyon Ceman, who told him he was too experienced to hire. Here's what Ryan wrote in the e-mail:

"I respect your opinion but I could not disagree more with it. My talents and abilities allow me to travel the world and make a full-time living in professional wrestling, which is not something that most WWE Superstars could do on their own. You have coaches in place that have never drawn a dime in their careers trying to determine who and who cannot draw money which is the true flaw in your system. I have had far more successful names in wrestling, some within WWE itself, rave about my creativeness, character acting and ability to engage an audience and your evaluators missed it. Perhaps it's time for you to reevaluate your evaluators. Good luck in finding your next big superstar."

I've seen Joey Ryan live before and he is right. He has improved dramatically in the ring since he's left TNA. I hope to see him back there soon.

Ryan in TNA was a massive improvement on what I'd seen him do in Championship Wrestling From Hollywood - he was just some bland, generic arrogant celebrity/Hollywood gimmick that didn't stand out. Also was a massive spot monkey. All of a sudden, he switched into the super-sleaze with the moustache and the baby oil, not to mention a couple of decent catchphrases.

He's still not brilliant, but he was one of the more entertaining guys in TNA when they gave him something to do, which just wasn't frequently enough. He was a decent enough midcarder who could be a decent feud for most, and wasn't bad as a jobber either.

His character is opening match indy comedy shit. It has no place in a national promotion. He's as subtle as a brick in the face. The 70s porn star gimmick was horrendously out of place even in TNA, where standards aren't that high. The punchline of the whole act is there the first time you see him. There's nothing you can do with him week to week.

Can't say I agree. Most gimmicky characters are one-note when they start, and the booking helps them progress. You can only do nothing with him week to week if you give him nothing to do week to week. Also, whilst he was clearly comedy, his gimmick was such as to be able to draw out disgust from the fans so that he could be an OK heel. Val Venis was on national TV, and whilst he wasn't a 70s gimmick, he was a porn star character, with no subtlety about him either.

I'm with Carbomb, Joey Ryan was one of the very few things I found entertaining in TNA and he stood out a mile among the bland shit they had do Gut Check. In fact, aside from Sam Shaw (and only because he's recently on TV) Spud and Taylor Hendrix I could only name Joey Ryan from Gut Check.

Val Venis was about innuendo and he was portrayed as actually being able to pull women (and did). And even that had a short shelf life, and he could actually work. It was also fitting for the type of programming they were putting out at the time. Joey Ryan ticks every clich

Joey Ryan's gimmick was that he was a sleaze, not necessarily a porn-star. Could've been one of those sex-pest Lotharios, could be a beach bum. He was supposed to be off-putting, not attractive. I don't have a problem with him ticking every clich
