Among The Living and Spreading The Disease are the two that have been regular listening since my teenage days. As well as Joey being their best singer (check out Armed & Dangerous), the best albums are the ones from when Dan Spitz was still in the band.

I've got a few tickets, passes, setlists etc. in frames in the landing of our house.

Noticed this morning that its been eighteen (18!!!!!!) years to the day already since Metallica headlined Wembley in 2007.

Did anyone go?

This felt like a really big deal to me at the time. It was probably one of the first concerts that felt like something I really could not miss. Wembley was only just open then and I think there had only been a couple of gigs. I want to say George Michael just played and then the 'Live Earth' thing the day before which Metallica were also a part of. 

This was back in the day where I could get a ticket, a flight to London and a hotel room without breaking the bank. Entire trip probably cost me like £250.

Me and my friend got to the stadium so early as I was and am an overexcited little superfan. Could not believe it when we got handed wrist bands for the golden circle at the very front. I literally sprinted towards the stage as security shouted at me as if I was running beside a swimming pool or something.

Ticket says support was HIM, Bullet For My Valentine and Mastodon. This isn't correct as BFMV cancelled and were replaced by Machine Head. Machine Head were on the touring cycle for The Blackening so were riding the crest of a wave at the time and went down an absolute storm. 

This was part of the 'Sick of the Studio' tour which was seemingly a break in the writing and recording process of the Death Magnetic album. As such, they had nothing to promote, no anniversary to celebrate. They played setlists heavily weighted towards the first four records so we got songs such as Disposeable Heroes, Ride the Lightning, the full version of ...And Justice For All, Whiplash, Battery, The Four Horsemen, Orion. Great setlists across the board.

I also saw them the week earlier at Rock Werchter in Belgium as I had nothing better to do with my time or money back then.

I wasn't there, but it quite alarming when you realise the length of time that has passed between shows. I saw Deftones 2 weeks ago, and it was 27 years since the first time I saw them. There was a healthy sized portion of that crowd that wasn't alive when I first went. Barmy.

The whole cyclical nature of music fascinates me. Seeing stuff I loved come back around and be popular again is a bizarre feeling but it's pretty cool, espcially as someone who never fell out of love with the shit.

It's scary!

I remember the first time I saw contemporary Iron Maiden on tv was the video for Run to the Hills from Rock in Rio. That was recorded at the start of 2001.

I would later become a gigantic die hard Maiden fan. At that time I thought they were such embarrassing old men.

I am now almost as old as Bruce Dickinson was a Rock in Rio 2001.

My 15yo loves Deftones as much as she loves Taylor Swift. I love it.

One of the major benefits of streaming services to be honest. They've listened to me give the "Well if you wanted two albums, you'd buy one, tape it, return it and get the one you wanted more" spiel so many times now, and I'm glad that generation after generation is exposed to music (and also other arts) and I don't think that'll ever die. 

The struggle was real with the buying of the CDs though

I am far too much of a luddite to work out what I would need to do and how to avoid ending up on a list somewhere for downloading stuff from PB. Will have to wait for the inevitable DVD.

I've been watching a bunch of the sets back this morning on Dailymotion, playing Where's Wally to try and spot myself. Oddly enough, man in black t-shirt with beard and tattoos is not that easy to find in that crowd.

There was a woman there who'd painted her entire head and arms turquoise stood a couple of people behind me and I can't spot her either.

There was a guy near me in Boston Celtics vest and Boston Celtics hat*. I have used him to find myself in a couple of pics.

It's 34 years since we travelled from Blackpool to Manchester, and when it was my turn to pick the music, I put Spreading The Disease on.
It finished just nicely as we were pulling up, and my Mum ejected the tape and asked very nicely that I "never play that crap ever again". 

It's 38 years since I first heard Phantom Of The Opera being played through someone's window (ironically on King Edward Avenue) and realising that it was more than just a Lucozade advert.

It's crazy how long this music has been such an integral part of my life.

I started listening to Maiden properly in 1989, just as alternative and grunge were about to take off, so saw the rapid transition of them being considered "veterans" to "rock dinosaurs". It's amazing how 30+ years after they were they were being written off that they're still going so strong.

I have been making my way through all the Dynamo Festival coverage. That festival really had some insane and varied line ups in its heyday.

Sorry to take the topic back to Sabbath but does anyone follow Mr Murals on Instagram? If you don't, I would recommend having a quick look. He's done an amazing mural of Sabbath on the bridge at Navigation Street just outside New Street station this weekend and Ozzy and the band went down to sign it. I'm not even a Sabbath fan but it made me a little emotional

I swung by early Sunday morning for some pictures on my way back up to Scotland.

It was quite strange as the weather was mostly good in the build up, there were people everywhere and there was a real buzz around the city. I walked to New Street at like 7am Sunday. Grey, rainy. I easily got to see the mural, the bench etc. Really added to my colossal comedown. 

When I passed by early Saturday it was utter chaos. I also assume some of the bands were in the hotel near the bench because there were crowds there as well.
