Went to see Slipknot in Glasgow last night.  There's been a bit of moaning online for this tour as they're playing their debut album (and only their debut album) so their full set is only around an hour and 15 mins long, but personally I thought the show was almost perfect in every way.  I've seen them 5 times now and to be honest if it wasn't for them playing the debut album I probably wouldn't have bothered, but fuck me they sounded incredible.  Heavier and tighter than I've ever seen them before and I loved the fact they didn't include the usual bells and whistles (extending Spit it Out, having everyone sit for Surfacing, etc.) as it really added to the idea of seeing them as they would have been back in 1999.  Outstanding show.

Yeah I've seen Slipknot a bunch of times and whilst my interest in the band is at an all time low (though Eloy on the sticks has definitely given them new life) my preferred format for ever seeing them again would be just horsing through the debut from start to finish and then fucking off stage. In and out, Jesus & Mary Chain style, no quasi-spiritual "My Slipknot family!" gibberish from Corey Taylor. 

They're one of those bands that for ages with new stuff coming out I'd try and hold it up in my head but realistically I couldn't care less about their discography outside of Slipknot and Iowa. And even the latter has that pained, self-aware "Gotta make DA LOUDEST THING EVER!" sheen to it. 

The debut, however, is great. It's the only Slipknot album where they do sound like something's just gone very, very wrong in somebody's rehearsal space rather than a slick marketing enterprise.

Nailed it @The Gaffer I feel exactly the same. I've seen them a stupid amount of times from their first UK shows to headlining festivals, and I'd only be interested in full run throughs of albums 1 and 2 (I don't even think I've listened to the most recent two)

Decided against it this time as the venue in London is shit and its bloody expensive.

Saw them in Leeds on Saturday. It was my 12th Slipknot show, and one of the best. Seeing them again in Manchester tomorrow night.

We had the first album on at work this morning as we were unpacking a delivery, my colleague had been to see them in Leeds the other night.

That first album is dam near perfect apart from Spit It Out, which is genuinely one of the worst songs I’ve ever heard. If I could take it off the album somehow then it’s an 11/10 album. 
Still don’t think they’re ever going to put out ‘Look Outside Your Window’ though

I somehow only ever caught them once and that was during the infamous Unholy Alliance tour with Slayer, Hatebreed and a young Mastodon that barely anyone knew.

It was the full 00's experience, a little from the 3rd album iirc but also the bangers from the first two.

Absolutely belting show. I saw that tour at Hammersmith and its a really easy venue to make it to the front and as I was with my brother in law, who is 6 foot 10, was well protected. Brilliant fun.

For me, Slipknot are the metal equivalent of Oasis.

• Debut is an absolute classic
• Second album is fucking great
• No good albums after that but the occasional great single
• The main members are really fucking annoying

I’d respectfully disagree. Albums 1-4 are all great in my opinion, and ‘.5: The Gray Chapter’ is a decent effort. 
The last two albums have been poor though, the most recent certainly feeling like a rushed effort to get their record contract finished with

Yeah I think saying no good albums after Iowa is a bit harsh.  They absolutely do decline in quality with each release but I'd say they're all at least "good" up to All Hope is Gone. After that yeah you are definitely entering the realm of individual songs over full albums, but I think they're at the Metallica stage now where the fanbase is happy to support new stuff of varying quality if it means keeping the band going.

They're one of those bands I really hated at first. Thought they were just a bunch of noise and didn't really get on with it until Duality. But then I went back and appreciated the older stuff more and they're actually my favourite albums now. The later ones have bits and pieces I'll listen to but I've honestly forgotten most of their recent work.

I was a fan the second I heard Wait And Bleed as a 14 year old. That first album is such a fantastic time capsule to me of a time when I would wear my Slipknot hoody every day (Korn t-shirt underneath, obvs), would blast the first two albums on my minidisc player at college and got in to bother with my nan for having a back patch with the "Fuck it all, fuck this world" bit of the lyrics to Surfacing on.

The only thing that put me off tickets for this current tour, other than the cost, is it's really an amalgamation of the self titled and Iowa albums that make up the core of my nostalgia for Slipknot. As great as that first album is I don't think I could sit through the whole thing without pining for a bit of Left Behind or People=Shit. I bought Iowa the morning it came out, walked in to Meadowhall the second it opened, got my Day One Maggot patch for my troubles (that I still have somewhere) and cranked it the second I got home. I saw them for the first time live in 2004 and the set was mainly first two albums and a few bits off Volume 3 which had just come out.  

Like others have said, the quality has definitely gone downhill but not as alarmingly quickly as you might think. Vol 3 has a couple of bangers and it feels like they got let off the leash a bit with doing guitar solos. All Hope Is Gone has a few good moments but I haven't listened to anything the band has put out since, outside of checking out the singles.
