Your dream job

Being a guitar builder and working for one of the most well respected guitar builders in the world is basically my dream job so I'm quite lucky in that regard.

I work with only two other people, work a four day week, we have a beer fridge, I've met a bunch of guitarists from bands I've admired for years, some I can now call friends (one of which, weirdly, being Wade Barrett), I'm also lucky enough to get given free gear/tickets by companies and people due to my job from time to time. 

But at the end of the day, it's also a job so it's not always sunshine and rainbows. I still frequently get very annoyed and pissed off due to differing opinions on how things should be done, there being only three people in the company means as well as building I have to do all the marketing/photography/videography/etc, and sometimes Dave Hill from Slade turns up and I have to listen to him talk non-stop for two hours straight.

Its funny that I've been on here for god knows how long and yet dont really know much about any of you, but reading this thread I've learned so much about some of you. 

 

Great news @tiger_rick and really pleased to see hard work and effort paying off in so many spades so well done!

@TAFKA Jonny Vegas I've done that job with learning difficulties people and worked with elderly and disabled adults and believe me there is NOTHING more satisfying than seeing people and hearing them be so grateful that you've made their day that little bit easier. Yeah the pay is absolutely awful for the job, but the job satisfaction is second to none.

 

For me, I'd love to be able to be a professional sportsperson and be able to travel the world but on the flip side once I'd secured my families future and my kids have plenty put away for the future and their kids, the rest of my income would be spent on local community projects and organisations as we live in a lovely area with a real old fashioned community feel.

Wow, less than 3 years from start to finish is pretty zippy for a diagnosis. Thats impressive!

 

Whne I got my diagnosis, and finally got my head around it, it certainly made it easier to realise why I struggled with certain jobs and responsibilities, now im in a much more fitting role for me.

Through work I was once invited to the Special Forces Club for a drink in Knightsbridge. It's touted as a very exclusive, high end private club but to be honest it reminded me of a slightly posher version of the Legion my Grandad used to drink in in Lambeth. Anyway, they had a rule in there that if you were on your own and you were physically near someone else who was on their own you had to talk to them. It was the rule! They had signs saying it all over the place. I get that it was to build relationships and ensure everyone was social but it was pretty stressful. Honestly I don't think I'd ever get bored of just sitting around doing my hobbies. But, I don't think it would be healthy for me as I would start loads of things I never finish and would ultimately feel unfulfilled if I didn't share some of the output with the world.

So my dream job would be one where I was given deadlines to complete my creative projects over which I had complete autonomy of what they were, but that someone else would then go and put on social media and market and do all that bollocks with.

If we're talking dream real jobs that actually exist then I don't really care what I'm doing . Whatever I can do working from home getting paid the most amount of money for the least amount of work, and not having to manage anyone.

For a good year after the pandemic my job was 100% WFH, overtime on tap, easy as fuck to excel at and enjoyable. It was amazing. Slowly the return to the office, overtime budget reduction, change in shifts, and headcount reduction made it gradually worse and I started looking elsewhere. I'm currently on a secondment in a role where the work is a lot more fulfilling, and in some ways it is a dream job, but it's not a role where I can switch my brain off, or listen to podcasts while I work. Some days I wish I could go back to how it was before.

Honestly I’d be happy with a job where there were goalposts that didn’t constantly move. Set a target, finish that target, clock out. It winds me up having “targets” now that if everyone hits just consistently get made harder until you get punished for not hitting them.

Let me come in on my own time, do the work, and leave.

In a similar vein, and IMO works well, is that the House of Lords restaurant has a 'Long table' rule in that whenever you go in there you MUST sit at the first available seat to encourage conversation and networking and mixing with people from parties you may not have always seen eye to eye with.

Whenever I have a special event at work and we put out long tables (usually they have round 4 seat tables) for meals I try and do the same thing so that the residents have to mix with different people and it means that the daily routine gets mixed up and changed and noone is felt 'institutionalised' by routines and seating arrangements.

Then it'd be bedtime after a large meal, or to a local hostelry, or to doomscroll watching shorts on Youtube which make me angry but I put into my veins like a syringe before Zammo. Then to Bed.

I thought of another one the other day. I’d always quite fancied having a go at being an auctioneer. You’d get to work with all kinds of interesting Stuff - from fine art to vintage toys and comics. Lots of research time for provenances and things. Not a clue how you get into such a field and it’s probably too late to start now but I think I’d have enjoyed it.

If only Takeshi's Castle was still on. The proper one with Craig Charles. That would have slotted right in there. 

@Ralphy I got diagnosed at 41 and there was a really difficult time afterwards where I needed to reflect on everything and try to figure out what behaviours were actually me, and what was me masking because that was what was expected of me. I felt massively relieved that I knew there was nothing "wrong" with me, and that it was just who I am. 

For the lights and noises stuff I couldn't recommend some headphones and sunglasses enough. I know it's preaching to the choir, and there'll be funny looks, but you need to do what's best for you. The number of times I get funny looks because it's 9-10° and chucking it down but I'm just wearing t-shirt, shorts, sunglasses and headphones while everybody else has got their raincoats on. I don't give a toss. My legs and arms will be dry much quicker than their hoodies. Sometimes I only wear a jacket nowadays because I need the pockets. 

Don't rush any of it, and be kind to yourself because it's a lot of stuff to deal with. Also congratulations on finally knowing.

I've worked as an auctioneer at University (Years ago) Race Nights and Sportman's Dinners, and I can confirm it is marvellous fun.
