I do enjoy looking at old merch catalogues and when you do you see the wcw machine was seriously lacking compared to wwe. But i have a huge fascination with wcw merch, purely because it was not availbe in the uk

What hurt WCW too was that they never really bothered with the European market unless business in the US was tanking.

So they had Bulldog tour in 93 didn’t they and then the Hulk tour in 1994 (?) but weren’t seen again until 2000 or so.

I must say that I wasn’t even aware how far ahead WCW were in 96/97/98 until I got access to the internet in late 99 or so when the tide had already well and truly turned.

Obviously I had an inking that WCW were at least competitive due to the high profile signings, but regularly watching both Raw and Nitro back in 96/97 I would honestly never have guessed.

You're spot on there, wwe was still seen as number 1 in the uk because it was on Sky Sports where WCW was on the 'free sky channel' TNA/cartoon network.

I do remember a big promotional push for Bulldog when he signed but that's all, I don't even remember the Hogan tour.

My only childhood memory of WCW figures was a friend having the ring with cage so he could do cage matches with his Hasbros - he didn’t have any of the figures himself. In about 96 I found out one mate had a Sting, a Flair and a Flyin Brian. I was well shocked a couple of years later when I stumbled upon Michael Hayes at a car boot.

The figure, I mean. Not that your actual Dok Hendrix was perusing old phone chargers, broken biscuits and sun bleached copies of They Think It’s All Over tapes.

All my Galoob figures were used as jobbers, or "rubbish ones" as me and my mates referred to jobbers as.

For me and all my mates that had wrestling figures, there was 4 combined WCW figures between us all. I had the DDP and Goldberg ones where you squeeze their legs and their arms move, which were passed down to me by my Mum’s friend. Another mate had the Kevin Nash one that I think was also a leg squeezer.

My other mate had one of the trash talking Konnans that his Gran got him. He never watched WCW and didn’t know who Konnan was. He accidentally left the figure on top of his fitted wardrobe and the lightbulb melted it.

Not WCW but another mate of mine had the Undertaker you filled with water and it made the figure “sweat”.

Yeah, as as kid I had more WCW figures than WWF ones for precisely this reason. I can remember getting them from a discount type shop in our town, that was like the Home Bargains of the day. I've still got them all now, except for Tom Zenk, who was sadly future endeavoured after being coated in Tippex and coloured in with green felt tip as part of an ill-fated gimmick change.

The late 90's WCW figures were all over Big W, you know the short lived Woolworths venture in massive stores filled with shite from a few different places? I never saw them in the normal Woolies unlike the Galoobs which mine had earlier on.

I wasn't really into figures at the time, instead spending all my money on bootleg games and PC stuff but they were dirt cheap and Wolfpac Sting just looked cool as fuck.

Found it rather fascinating with WCW that there was absolutely no effort to get the PPV's aired over here (there must have been a reason TV rights related I don't understand or being WCW it was WCW), but German audiences got them on DSF (what a channel!!!)

When we eventually got satellite TV at home in the late nineties I felt like I'd discovered a secret nobody else knew about when I randomly stumbled upon WCW on some obscure German channel. If it wasn't for the video games I wouldn't have even known that were still going before that. Even ECW got themselves on an English language channel!

I loved the Galoobs (except for the awful Ron Simmons with the arm stuck to his belly) even though I knew they were clearly inferior to the Hasbros. I was just happy there were WCW guys to add to my fig fed. And as much as the lack of movement was a negative, the one saving grace was at least you weren’t gonna have the Stinger’s arm fall off mid match like what happened with a few of my Hasbros. Those Galoobs will be being found in lofts hundreds of years from now. Indestructible.

I felt the same and it was even weirder one time when my friend was over during one of the WCW PPVs airing on DSF. Pretty sure it was World War 3 in 95 or 96. Halfway through one match the German commentator randomly started talking English and saying something like “we’d like to say hello to our viewers in the UK, we know you are watching”. Felt like he was talking specifically to us because I knew nobody else had discovered my WCW PPV hack.

 Not completely true, or at least down saaaath. They were all over my local woolies. We only had one Big W and it was well out of the way so only went occasionally. Bash at the Beach, Unleashed and TNT. If I knew they were almost UK exclusives I’d have bought loads of them because they were so cheap. All I had was a single Vampiro as I liked the hair. Stupid Stupid teenage Hannibal

Financially not worth it, probably. DSF clearly made an offer they couldn’t refuse, but there would have been no channels over here willing to pay to give up three hours of airtime for wrestling (and not the “big time”) not under the Sky banner.
