Spoiler I don't think he was doing the chainsawing in the first place or that it was a crate. Have a look at the curtain behind the crate - especially how it starts flapping about just as Funk's getting in. The back wall's probably actually a door - someone else does the chainsaw bit, then Funk kicks it down. But in a more fun mood, look at the big step that's left, while he's got talc in his face and a stocking blocking his view. Imagine if he'd Shockmastered himself here. I'm genuinely giggling at the thought, even though it's Terry Funk and he just would have made it seem awesome, but fucking hell, that would have been hilarious. Quote
davertfnewman Posted February 16 Posted February 16 I get more anxious looking at those jagged splinters on the box and the idea of catching your legs or worse on them stepping out. Quote
Chili Posted February 16 Posted February 16 (edited) I've timestamped this, but Funk 'moonsaulting' onto Road Dogg and a load of chairs at the spry age of 53, whilst wearing a pair of stockings with talc on his head, followed by his Homer Simpson selling by spinning in a circle on his side always raises a chuckle/sharp in-take of breath because he's fucking mad. Then he gets up and starts staggering/jigging about twirling his fingers like he's Randy Savage or something. I say moonsault, he essentially just launches himself and somehow twists mid-air and lands on his hip instead. Bloody hell Terry, what we gonna do with you. Edited February 16 by Chili Quote
AshC Posted February 17 Posted February 17 (edited) Just got me looking for any Savage vs Funk matches and Cagematch says no, but they did *team* once in the WWF, against Tito and JYD at the Cow Palace. Sign me up for that one. According to Funk's book though, he'd "actually been one of Randy's first professional opponents. He wrestled under a mask while playing for a minor-league team of the St. Louis Cardinals". Fun fact, they both debuted for WWF TV at the 17th June 1985 taping. Edited February 17 by AshC Quote
Paid Members Supremo Posted February 23 Paid Members Posted February 23 (edited) In Your House: D-Generation X is an undeniably bad show, but still a few things of note. Fun to watch Stone Cold vs. The Rock considering it would go on to be such a huge feud and headline so many Wrestlemanias. Austin is fully formed megastar here. All a company would ever need. Bret who? It’s more noticeable watching with 2026 eyes how much they hide Austin’s new limitations, but at the time I just thought it was cool as fuck watching him chuck D-Lo Brown through car windows. Hell yeah! Similarly, watching Butterbean vs. Marc Mero’s daft boxing match with modern eyes gave me a whole new appreciation. Nowadays, when we get so much fucking wrestling on so many fucking wrestling shows, I love a bit of variety like this. I still look back fondly at Wardlow and Jake Hager’s silly MMA match on Dynamite, Hurricaranas and all. Same thing here, watching Marc stooging about in a boxing match, raking eyes, hitting drop kicks and then smashing Butterbean with a stool. Good, fun stuff. Always had a lot of time for Marc Mero, both as the Wildman and then as Marvellous Mark. I wonder how his career may have gone differently if he didn’t come in with Sable. Didn’t Stone Cold refuse to work with him or something? Jealous of the pyro? Sgt. Slaughter going a torturous seventeen minutes with Triple H should be the headline, but I was so fucking bored watching the match that I ended up looking up Slaughter’s age at the time. Sarge was only forty nine years old, and he was portrayed as the doddering, laughable old man being dragged out of retirement by these disgusting punk kids. Forty nine! He’d be in his prime in 2026! He’s only two years older than Wrestlemania 42 headliner CM Punk! With this in mind, I want Roman Reigns to bust out these visors for his next face to face promo with Punk. Bloody old idiot keeps spitting in my face! Back to the Nursing Home, Grandad! On to In Your House No Way Out, which already features this highlight. Two young, tech-savvy chaps who definitely understand what the internet is in February 1998 and are definitely chatting with fans via AOL Instant Messenger. Edited February 23 by Supremo Quote

I like Mero. He seems like one of those rare ‘too nice for wrestling’ type of wrestlers and I think a lot of the criticism of him as a ‘crap worker’ over the years is overly harsh and mostly bullshit from other wrestlers. You never really hear many fans say he was shit, that talk pretty much always came from other wrestlers. Didn’t ‘nice guy’ Foley even trash him in one of his books? I’ve always felt it’s all rooted in pure jealousy because Mero got the first WWF guaranteed contract. Like that was his fault or as if he should’ve turned it down. It’s bollocks. And I actually rate Mero’s in-ring stuff, especially late Johnny B Badd in 95 to the early Wildman run in 96. But…I don’t buy that they were gonna do Austin vs Mero as Austin’s first program after winning the title. They were kind of pushing Marvellous Marc as a heel at the time but that was mostly to boost Sable. The use of Mero himself at the time was nothing like you’d expect if he was about to work with the hottest wrestler in the world in main events for the big boy belt. I just can’t see Mero going from being in the mixed tag at Mania where he played not second, not third, but fourth fiddle to his wife and his wife’s tits, to headlining with Stone Cold Steve Austin at the peak of his powers. Surely Mero’s got his wires crossed there or someone in the office back then was straight lying to his face? Not a single soul would’ve taken Austin vs Mero in 98 seriously. As good as Mero was in that midcard dickhead role, that would’ve been a Raw or even Sunday Night Heat match at best. Quote
Paid Members tiger_rick Posted February 23 Paid Members Posted February 23 The story that Austin nixed working with Mero was definitely mentioned in the Observer at the time and the fact Mero had sold for Sable was given as the reason. As with all wrestlers, there's probably some truth and some myth, with the myth being that it was to be any sort of major program. Austin was seriously paranoid once he hit the top though. Fucker didn't want to work with anyone but the Undertaker, Mick and fucking Kane. Watching Austin vs. Taker matches should be the alternative to prison for most major crimes. That'd learn 'em. Quote

Good point about the Austin/Taker matches, off the top of my head there was the Raw main event where Austin won the title back and Fully Loaded ‘99 that were quality, everything else dragged Quote

Youre right about Marc Mero not being good enough for the headline slot, but they were probably more of the thinking it would be Sable, along with Marc, being the headline act. Only way it makes some sort of logic, as it seemed like they were that high on Sable at the time? Quote

In fairness to Foley, he pretty much says exactly that in the book, that Mero was a good guy but he was always comparing their earnings because he thought, correctly, that he was a much better performer. I also thought Mero was excellent as Johnny B Badd, but a lot of the magic was gone with the gimmick change, and post injury return he was finished. Quote
