I don’t even remember how it came about? How was it explained and introduced on TV? Why not just call him Terry Funk when everyone knows it’s Terry Funk? I enjoyed it all the same but seems an odd choice to say ‘we’ve got one of the all time legendary wrestlers on the roster again, let’s put some tights on his head’. Mad old bastard. Quote
davertfnewman Posted February 15 Posted February 15 He had a story about wanting to do something different and to come in as a character but I personally think it was a bit of self-protection - if it didn't get over he could claim ignorance because it was Chainsaw Charlie rather than Terry Funk. Even though things were about to take off it was a time where some things were fizzling out and being a guy of a certain age who hadn't been there for years was working against him. Notice that by WrestleMania it's basically Terry Funk in jeans and braces with no "mask". Quote

He's obviously superb in the 1998 match. But this spot from the year prior, just watching him, the fortunate timing of it and the way he bumps like a wall fell on him always cracks me up. From memory from the Prichard show(so take with a pinch of salt) Funk told Prichard he wanted to do his version of the Leatherface Gimmick in the states. He had a dentist when he was a kid who he nicknamed Chainsaw Charlie so that’s where he got the name from. Quote

Completely agree, he was clearly in "control" but it was so haphazard and chaotic, it really added to the thrill of it all. He seemed unhinged, I loved it. Quote

The best night of many of their careers, but it quickly goes south soon after. Wild how quickly DX completely undermine them as the top heel faction and they seemingly just tread water until Bret is screwed out of the company by Survivor Series. It was as if Vince himself sat at the desk at the end of Canadian Stampede and decided, “well, it’ll never top this, time to move on to something new and fuck these boys off.” Other than the main event, which I’ve obviously watched a million times, I don’t think I’d ever watched the rest of Badd Blood since it originally aired. Weird show. It shouldn’t come as a surprise considering what we’d learn about Vince McMahon in the decades that followed, but his handling of Brian Pillman’s death is positively haunting. The fucking oddball sounds more annoyed by the inconvenience of it than anything else. “Up next was supposed to be a Brian Pillman match, but he’s gone and ruined that by dying, so we’ve booked a six-man mini match instead. Apologies for Brian’s unprofessionalism.” How do you think they’d handle it if a wrestler booked for a pay per view in 2026 was found dead in their hotel room earlier that afternoon? Do they cancel the show? You’d hope so. Watching it back, it’s like a haunting echo of what was to come with Owen Hart’s death a year and a half later. Everyone goes through the motions and delivers a House Show affair, and then trust a psychopath like mid-90s Shawn Michaels to still deliver one of the greatest one man performances of all time. Do you think he even knew about Pillman? Did they wake him up, immediately pump him full and cocaine and somas, and send him out there oblivious? It's such a cool visual, and I hate to be that guy but Spoiler That delay after the saw is in the box is clearly him switching chainsaw to the gimmicked one. You can also see him turn the sparks on with a button in the handle before he hits it against the turnbuckle post. Quote
