Especially because even when he was all up Flair’s arse, Flair’s always talked highly of Funk anyway so it’s not like he’d have talked negatively on him to appease Flair. It’s baffling. No coincidence his dreariest spell of his in-ring career was when already regularly performing Flair’s kneedrop and Arns spine buster, he added the Indian Deathlock to his regular repertoire, regularly came out dressed swish and grew a handlebar moustache. Triple H was saying it along the lines of "you don't want to look stupid like Terry Funk", it was absolutely nothing to do with a safer wrestling style. Mox didn't wrestle a dangerous style in WWE, he only started doing the mad shit once he left. Quote

Which shows that not only does Triple H not get Terry Funk, he also doesn't recognise a Three Stooges bit. Triple H being a "student of the game" was always a gimmick. It was a surface level of appreciating wrestling history that began and ended with NWA Champions of the early 1980s; a little bit of Flair and a little bit of Harley Race. The same as him trying to put himself over as a great technical wrestler, when he was just as much a WWF heavyweight brawler as Austin, Rock or Cena. By the time he's interacting with Mox, Triple H is already fully embedded in management, and you can almost guarantee that his opinion on Terry Funk is coloured by him not having been a top guy in the WWF, and probably WWF management laughing at him behind his back about it. He learnt how to do a Dragon Sleeper, which he administered three separate times. Owen would keep getting short hope spots and then we’d be right back to another Dragon Sleeper. Three. Fucking. Times. To give him the benefit of the doubt, I think he was trying to slow the action down in order to allow the fans to focus on the bollocks surrounding the match. Chyna is in the shark cage, first trying to break out with a file, then bending the bars, then hanging from the cage and being lowered down by Road Dogg. All eventually allowing X-pac to interfere and help Hunter win. The logic checks out that you’d try and slow it down to put the spotlight on the actual talent in DX. The only problem is Hunter makes it so fucking boring that even Chyna falls asleep and forgets she’s there to fool everyone into thinking Triple H is an act worth caring about! Chyna wake up! Watching this match back, you can see how Randy Orton could be Hunter’s protege. Boring fuckers and their endless rest holds. Joking aside, this was the match where it felt like Hunter put it all together. A dull, plodding chancer who’d only get over by surrounding himself with far more talented wrestlers, simultaneously politicking the fuck out of anyone who might be a threat backstage. You only have to look at poor Owen Hart. Man got chewed up and spat out in record time. Coaxed back with the promise of a big push and feud with Shawn, he’s almost immediately putting Hunter over and being made to look a moron, constantly being outsmarted by the heels. If I remember correctly, Owen never recovers, does he? He turns heel, joins The Nation, but then they just use that to pivot to Hunter vs. The Rock and Owen is left in the dust. But history is written the winners and until he's hilariously sacked one day, that's not changing. I think he's ironically similar to Shane Douglas. Douglas wasn't shit, history has been rather unkind to him. But what he was, was a good and sometimes very good worker who with the right dance partner(s) could hold up his end and pull his weight, keep everything ticking over. But give him someone inferior, and Douglas just couldn't carry people very well. He's a better worker than Douglas, but he needed the dance partners for me as a similarity. He also was NEVER the guy, like The Undertaker. He just didn't have it to ever be Rock, Austin or even a Shawn, Bret, where you are absolutely the man on merit. Even in his great year of 2000, he's not the guy! He's the top heel, but it's not built around him, it's built around The Rock. He's great in that year, but he absolutely thinks he's up there on a higher level than just being a good lead villain. Again to some degree the villain isn't meant to be the star (Billy Graham and Flair being a rare exception before Hunter, but different times and booking philosophies, plus Flair was Flair). If you look at when the megastars weren't topping the bill (KOTR 2002 Vs Taker as an example), they feel very much like the top tier supporting players. Look at when he was positioned as the big lad in the playground when Austin & Rock we're off in 2003. Cosplay Ric Flair whilst looking like Harley Race and even though Scott Steiner's foot was completely fucked and maybe a short sprint and a gaga fuck finish would make him look like at least something. HHH and whoever the bloody hell else are like, nah, it's the World Title, it's gotta be a proper match. They did it twice and it was utter rammel. You'd almost think he was actively sabotaging the matches, which he wasn't. He was just incredibly overconfident. You can't not expect a wrestler to feel that, but it didn't tell him to change it up, because then he kept continuously shitting the bed and facing no issue due to position and privilege. It took HBK when they weren't in the mood to be utterly boring and a family anialator to drag him to serviceable matches again. I do enjoy him, but I don't think I could watch much of him again before his knee injury in 2001 and some bits and pieces from 2004. Did he ever have an Indian summer? That 2008 Smackdown run with Edge & Jeff Hardy about. Was he good again then? It's a blur to me. Anyway... @SupremoI've not seen Unforgiven 1998 in donkeys. Is it worth a punt, I don't remember much.
