Paid Members Supremo Posted April 5 Paid Members Posted April 5 (edited) WWF in 1997 until mid-1998 always felt like the perfect, chaotic combination of the old school booking of Jim Ross, Cornette, McMahon and Pritchard, mixed with Russo dragging them into modern day. Judgment Day 98 felt like the tipping point. This is pure Russo. He’s locked the rest of them out of the writers room. Essentially a three hour episode of Raw. Dumb rubbish. Crap, throwaway matches. Storylines primarily designed to mention pop culture references than anything else. Jerry Springer! Marilyn Manson! We’re cool and hip! Honest! Don’t get me wrong; everything is hot. Everything is over. But none of it holds up to a repeat watch. Triple H forfeits the Intercontinental Title. Shawn must have been proud. Locked in Ken Shamrock's Ankle Lock, Mankind decides to give himself the Mandible Claw and go unconscious rather than tap out. Crap. Was it ever explained why Mark Henry beat The Rock on this show, considering they were building The Rock up to win the belt at Survivor Series? Did Mark get a Title shot down the line? Feels so stupid in the moment. Another pay per view with a non-finish, as special guest ref Stone Cold Steve Austin refuses to let The Undertaker or Kane win the World Title. Vince fires Stone Cold and Jim Ross goes amusingly hard talking about how this is the last we’ll ever see of Stone Cold. Goodbye forever to the greatest Superstar of all time. For looking, it's the first appearance of Rock's winter tracksuit while he gets his nipples fixed. I do like Mark's "Now get a smell of that!" remark after his sleazy poem to Chyna, which disgusts JR, as well as his victory run after getting the upset. That said, Rock totally no-sells it. Quote

I do remember enjoying that at the time but it’s been a while. Yeah, as hot as the WWF was at the time, there’s a very noticeable drop-off in the actual quality of the In Your Houses after Over The Edge in May 98 isn’t there? That Austin vs Dude Love match seems to have been when IYH peaked and then they did three fairly rotten shows in a row with Fully Loaded, Breakdown and Judgment Day. I remember Rock Bottom in December being arse as well. Picked up a bit in 99 but those last four IYH shows of 98 were dog rough. Quote
The Gaffer Posted April 6 Posted April 6 (edited) Oof, Judgement Day 98 is another favourite. I can't help it. I know most of the matches just flatline after the over entrances, but I love the dark, calamitous atmosphere on everything heading towards the end of 98 with the biblical video packages, 'Taker slowly turning darker, Corporation slowly forming into a faction etc. I recall D'lo/X-Pac and Taka/Christian being decent, too. The 'Taker/Kane match is interesting. It always felt like they knew Austin would be gobbling up all the heat in a match he wasn't even wrestling in, so contrived to have an extremely long match with moves and holds and rest spots only it completely failed to catch on, and what you end up with is one of the WWE PPV slogs of all time. It has era-defining entrances for both 'Taker and Kane who look a gazillion dollars coming out to those classic themes, pyro everywhere etc so you could tell they were really going for it, it just felt flat as soon as the bell rung. DOA/LOD and the Venis/Goldust stuff are some truly awful lows, though. Rock Bottom doesn't fare much better from what I recall. One of the trashiest of them all. Edited April 6 by The Gaffer Quote

Also Austin marching about backstage post match and accidentally walking in on a 'retired in storyline, not currently on TV' Owen Hart whilst he's making a genuine phone call. Austin trying to keep it rolling just asks him 'You seen Vince?' and Owen off the cuff brilliantly replies 'No, I'm retired'. Quote

Stop trying to have a good match, lads. Save your bumps. Just do your entrance and say your catchphrase. That’s all anyone wants to see. The only other worthwhile thing is Undertaker’s entrance. He’s using his Ministry music, which I still think is the best one, they go absolutely over the top with how many times they shoot pyro, and Jim Ross is on top form shouting and screaming over it. Check him out. ”…one of the most extraordinary athletes in the….*pyro goes off* OHHHH MY GAWWWD….in the entire history of the World Wrestling Federation!” An entrance that good, leading to a dull, plodding pile of shit, with a crap non-finish. Not really. Rock beat D’Lo the night after, Droz the week after that. Two weeks out from Survivors he beat Ken Shamrock by DQ in a match where he had to win the ICT to qualify for the Deadly Game tournament, then finally beat Mark the last Raw before the PPV in a bells and whistles Attitude special where “humbled ref” Shane McMahon slid in and counted the win for him after a suitable amount of chaos. They wanted to build up extra obstacles for Rock so it was more shocking when he turned at the PPV, regardless that it doesn’t make any sense in hindsight. Quote
