With no Stone Cold around he was front and centre alongside Rock and latterly Kurt Angle as business stayed buoyant and he earned huge plaudits from Meltzer, top of the PWI 500 etc for being involved in some banging main events during a hot period. I think he dined out on that for ages even though he’d never be close to that consistently good ever again. Quote

He's got a good enough body of work there are arguments for other matches and I think I always have a soft spot for RR 2000 cos it was that first channel 4 PPV which introduced a bunch of friends to wrestling and immediately got Mick over with them.. I definitely prefer it to the Shawn Michaels match. I'm probably blanking on some WCW ones. Might be blanking on something really obvious but yeah, there's a good argument Mick Foley had his best match with HHH Quote

My favourite is against The Rock at Rumble 99. It's so wild and dramatic. Foley's frantic babyface performance in that is one for the ages. Foley himself says the match with Orton is his best. Quote

One thing I didn’t remember was how they perfectly addressed the biggest plot hole with almost every other guest ref gimmick. If a guest ref is so biased that they’ll cheat and help their friend gain an advantage, what’s forcing them to be so honourable when it comes to kick outs? Why don’t they just blindly count to three on the very first pinfall attempt regardless of whether they kick out or not, awarding the victory to whoever they want to win? It’s genuinely clever here to have The Undertaker out there as VAR, threatening to murder McMahon if he takes things too far. Vince brilliantly looks terrified, constantly looking over to Taker when he counts the pin, knowing any messing around will result in him knocking his block off. Fantastic stuff. The pop for this spot is up there as one of the loudest of all time. Crowd ERUPTS. Binging these In Your House events has confirmed that Mick Foley might be the most underrated performer in the history of the company. Even for as much credit as some give him, it’s absolutely wild watching him make stars and raise the games of almost everyone in the Attitude Era. Single handedly saved The Undertaker’s career. Made a star out of Triple H, twice. Was the perfect foil for Stone Cold coming out of Mania 14 and now he’s going to go push The Rock over the finish line, too. Man was worth his weight in gold. Slammed into concrete. Over and over again. Fully Loaded 1998, next. Thank fuck for Netflix. Kids these days will never know the struggle of taking something like this to the counter in Woolworths. I swear to god I put off buying Fully Loaded 98 back in the day in HMV in Cork because my nan used to take me in after school on Friday evenings and I wasn't handing her that. Adds to our ongoing group discussion about Triple H being the uncool uncle in DX in 1998 that he's even on the worst VHS cover of the year. Fully Loaded 98 is one of the worst shows I can think of, and I love me a good rubbish Attitude Era PPV. You're in for a tough time with that one. Even the backstage segments and overall pacing is weird. It's like the whole production and writing team just got stoned that day. Quote

When I used to do ref seminars, I always talked about the importance of a ref working with a heel to help them get their stuff over, without losing the referee's credibility, because people don't inherently hate cheating, they hate the sense that somebody is getting away with cheating - and the more blatant the better. A few years ago, WWE did an absolutely dismal PPV main event between Seth Rollins and Baron Corbin, with Lacey Evans as referee. And every time Seth got the upper hand, Lacey would get the mic and say, "actually this is a No DQ match" or "now this is Falls Count Anywhere", and there's nothing behind that, no heat behind just making it up as you go along. One of the things that makes Over The Edge work is Pat Patterson smarmily saying, "I would like to remind you that this is a no disqualification match". It's the Corporation trying to keep the thinnest veneer of respectability and fair play that makes them work. Quote
