St. Valentine’s Day Massacre

I cringe every time at this show, as back in the day and at the height of my ITS STILL REAL TO ME DAMMIT markdom, I watched it with two of my non wrestling fan mates, and they pissed themselves laughing at Ken Shamrock telling his 'sister' (who surely has to be up there with the most attractive women ever in wrestling) "slap me" which they rewound over and over again. Little mark me was fuming.

They did enjoy the main event though.

Was it St Valentine’s Day massacre where Ryan Shamrock looked incredible in a white dress? Then turned up for Mania a month later looking like she’d just finished cleaning the bathroom

Literally the first thing I think of whenever that St Valentine’s Day Massacare show comes up is Shamrock gormlessly saying “slap me” while stood right in front of a cameraman. Funny as fuck.

Haven’t seen the show in decades but I remember it being miles better than the last few In Your Houses from 98. It’s got the Bob Holly vs Al Snow hardcore match where they end up in the river, it’s got Rock vs Mankind which pales in comparison to their ‘I Quit’ match at the Rumble the month before but they never really had bad matches, and it’s got this old creep nearly writing off his back on the corner of a table…

Looking up the card now to refresh my memory, you do also have to put up with typical Attitude Era undercard shite like Goldust vs Blue Meanie and Bossman vs Mideon. But the big matches (and rebrand Sparky Plugg vs rebrand Leif Cassidy) delivered on this one from what I remember. Can’t remember anything of the Triple H/X-Pac vs Kane/newly heel turned Chyna though.

I was a thirteen year old virgin, who could only dream of doing a shag, so I can half justify why I would have enjoyed this, but at the time Vinny Ru was thirty seven years old. Fucking hell, bro.

This belongs in here rather than the Vault thread. They uploaded Shawn vs Diesel from the April 96 In Your House.

Incredible match. It’s either this or the match with Bret at Survivor Series but factoring in that he was fully heel again here, this is arguably the best Diesel ever was in his whole WWF run and it was his last PPV. Obviously things worked out better with him going to WCW. I wouldn’t swap any alternate timeline of him staying in the WWF over what we got with the first couple of years of the NWO. But by this point he was way more entertaining to me than he’d ever been in the WWF before, definitely better than he was as a suit wearing, smiley babyface champion for most of 95. Although I suppose there wasn’t much left for him in the WWF by mid 96 anyway other than prolonging the feud with Shawn. They’d done him and Bret to death at that point and I’m not sure how much mileage they could’ve got out of him vs Undertaker. Must admit though, picturing the absolute mess that would’ve been Diesel vs Ahmed Johnson in 96 makes me wish we got to see it just once before he showed up on the other channel telling Bischoff (wrongly) about “adjectives”.

The match that led to everyone very helpfully clearing the monitors off the table before they stuck someone through it.

Not an in your house moment but still annoys me to this day when he powerbombed Taker at Wrestlemania he just walked round stroking his hair, go for the pin you knob!

Well, if both had stayed you could revisit Diesel vs Razor but with contention for the WWF title dangling in the balance with a view to finally elevating Razor. If they’d kept Kev face-leaning tweener instead of turning him to give Shawn the big rub, he hadn’t worked Hunter or Goldust yet. Mankind was coming in. JR dropped hints on Action Zone prior to the Rumble of “a Diesel/Vader confrontation” which never happened. Or if you DO turn him, Ahmed as you mention, cat and mouse vs Marc Mero, quick one vs face Yokozuna, good foil for crafty old Jake etc.

Did I forget anyone Big D hadn’t wrestled on the 96 singles roster?

In retrospect, Big Show’s WWE run was cursed from the very start, wasn’t it?

Debuting at St. Valentine’s Day Massacre, literally the first thing he does is screw up and accidentally give Stone Cold the victory. Thanks for nothing, you big idiot! Go back to smoking tabs in WCW!

Seems such a silly, weird way to bring someone in. Can’t ever imagine either WWE or AEW doing something similar with a big signing nowadays.

Not to worry though. I’m sure he was wearing this. Bet he smelled amazing.

His timing was crap too, as Austin had already been one step away from exiting via the door, and one tiny leap from hitting the floor via climbing down, and for some reason this wasn't enough for him to pop up and help Vince.

He was on some mega money deal as well, wasn't he. Austin should have won, and Show should have just appeared post match and chokeslammed Austin to close the show. Not that hard to book.

Then they had Austin beat him 123 with the Stunner on Raw before WrestleMania was even done and dusted. Just over a month into the company and they’ve already had Austin slay the giant. Madness. Built right that would’ve been a monster opponent for Austin at SummerSlam or whenever. But no, just spunk it away for free on Raw.
